Whose woods these are ? We think we know— The woods surrounding Robinson are but one of the school’s unique qualities. Those of us who enjoyed the fall colors and spring laurel this year may have been the last to do so. What appears to be a red leaf in the upper right picture is a surveyor’s marker. That tree and many others are doomed to development. FORTY-ONE YEARS IN EDUCATION SAMUEL J. COFFEY, PRINCIPAL 16 Mr. Coffey, a native of Bedford County, Virginia, graduated from Randolph Macon Academy in 1927. He prepared himself for a career in education by attending Ran¬ dolph Macon College in Ashland Virginia and the University of Virginia at Charlottesville. He began his educational career in 1929 as an instructor in physics at Randolph Macon Academy. From 1931 to 1943 he worked as a teacher, coach and principal in Bedford County, Virginia. His educational career was interrupted from July 1943 to October 1945 when he served as a member of the U.S. Army. In December 1945, he came to Fairfax County as assistant principal at Falls Church High School. During the past twenty-seven years, he has served the students of Fairfax County as assistant principal, principal, director of secondary education, assistant superintendent for personnel, and associate superintendent. Three years ago, Mr. Coffey became chairman of a committee that planned a new kind of school which was to become the prototype for many Fairfax County schools. Subsequently he became the principal of the school which he was instrumental in planning. Mr. Coffey, from the beginning of his career, had a strong feeling about young people and a unique talent to inspire them to greatness. Those of us who have been privileged to work with him have been amazed at his enthusiasm, vigor and ability to establish rapport with young people in the 1970’s when so many people despair of our “turned off’ young people. Mr. Coffey conceived of Robinson as the school for the in¬ dividual. Such a school appreciates the potential of a person, recognizes students as individuals rather than members of groups and seeks to be helpful to students on a one-to-one basis. The faculty of such a school strives to present lasting truths as well as new ideas with a flexible and adventuresome attitude. Samuel J. Coffey has made a tremendous contribution to Fairfax County schools by consistently recognizing the in¬ dividual potential of students, teachers and administrators alike. Eugene R. With this win under the belt of the varsity team, ten¬ sions relaxed and Robinsonians enjoyed the semi-formal dance held the next night. Homecoming Queen Linda Bennett led the couples in the fun and dancing of a most satisfying evening. On the light side, Kevin Farrell, Steve Fazer, and Marvin Pastel shocked everyone as they swallowed goldfish, an action unsurpassed as yet on the list of senior antics. Headed by the Rare Earth, the Raspberries, and Beloved, the field house was packed with Robinsonians and students from all over Fairfax County. After a few songs, everyone got into the groove and began clapping their hands, stomping their feet and really feeling the thumping, jumping rhythms of their favorite songs. 29 Michelle Mitchell, Mike Sottak Marion Stafford, Marvin Pastel A.F.S. Provided with really rocking rhythms by Medulla, the gals reversed the roles and asked the boys to dance. The couples fell right in line with the spirit of things and headed for the hitching post, manned by a very capable Marryin’ Sam, Mr. Kramer. Much of the eagerness that was felt by everyone as they awaited the arrival of Old St. Nick was temporarily set aside as the anticipation for this fun-filled evening increased. Dressed in velvets, satins, and silks, the starry-eyed couples arrived, the excitement of Christmas and hints of romance in the air. 32 Fazia Colombo, Italy Lischka Graf, Switzerland AFS members welcomed foreign exchange students Lischka Graf and Fazia Colombo, helping them to become acclimated to the rigors of life in an American high school. Lischka and Fazia soon became very active members of Robin¬ son organizations and their charm and wit were a definite asset to the school year. AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE CLUB Responsible, hardworking, service-minded, and fun-loving, Robinson’s Key Club began their year with a joint effort — a homecoming float that won second place in ihe judging, with help from their sister club, the Keyettes. They sponsored the Cavaliers-Squires basketball game to raise funds and took their turns on the court in a game with Woodson High ' s Key Club. A valuable service performed by this group is that of security and clean-up force at home football games. MATH HONOR SOCIETY 41 PUBLICATIONS PONDER PEOPLE, Student journalists are unselfish with their time and talents, producing a result that is a reflection of themselves and all others involved in the effort, subscribers, contributors, the whole of Robinson. Theirs is a ‘club’ which meets daily after school and sometimes on weekends and holidays. The challenge is met only when the last copy, layouts, and photographs are sent for publication, proofs are read, and that glorious day arrives when the issue goes to press. There are no trophies, no applauding fans. There is the result, and for them, it is enough. Those who read the paper find pertinent articles covering national and local issues as well as school events. It is an open forum for discussion of issues and many participated in the ex¬ change of opinions. Valor-Dictus is a Robinson publication, and is what Robinson students choose to make of it, through their active participation or passive indifference. The concern of a few dedicated staff members produced a representative collection of work this spring. Their financial plight echoing the universal problem of school art — literary magazines, staff members made and sold purses and candles to supplement a subscription drive. The four active members of Robinson’s Ecology-Action Club, Cindy Kiefer, Cathy Guinn, Gillian Kitchen, Stella Tar- nay and sponsor David Caughey could well wonder why. Star¬ ting the year with only eleven members, the number dwindled to four by February. A major project, landscaping the school grounds, seemed to stir little interest in the student body. Surely with over 4500 students Robinson could make more of an effort to help in the fight for the environment, a major national issue. What better place to start than in our own backyard? The most attractive school campus in Fairfax Coun¬ ty could, with the help and co-operation of all, be the most beautiful. 55 Ij I Pictures: P. 56 — waterfall at Shenandoah; p. 57, upper — scene at Shenan¬ doah; lower left — injured owl rescued by Annandale Nature Center; right_ ice on a leaf-strewn steam. 57 DRAMA 59 £ i. Where’s Mr. Nelson? Mrs. Benson? Returning art students soon learned that all art teachers were at Fairfax High with the Robinson seventh graders at one time or another this year. Every possible effort was made to allow advanced students to choose their courses, a monumental effort in scheduling. Welded metal sculpture was introduced into the curriculum and new media and approaches enriched standard course offerings. Visitors to the center saw displays of excellent wheel-thrown pottery, silversmithing, and drawings, paintings and graphics of unusual approach and technique. The current national interest in crafts was reflected in macrame, weavings, batiks, and enameling done in the popular crafts classes. Students bid farewell to Mrs. Ann Benson, who moved at mid-year, and welcomed Miss Joni Dim to the department. FOREIGN LANGUAGE With all 1972 teachers returning this year and additional materials and equipment purchased through last year’s doughnut sales, the Foreign Language center has shown great potential. This year’s innovations saw Miss Keefe and Mrs. Eisenhower team¬ teaching French II classes. A new course, Spanish conversation, entered the curriculum. While all students worked in standard class units, a greater emphasis was placed on individual help in smaller groups. Self-pacing projects were available to students whose skill and initiative warranted this approach. Two major problems had to be coped with — classes were overcrowded and teachers had to commute to Fairfax High to teach Robinson’s displaced seventh graders. Future plans involve a course offering for seventh and eighth grades called “Port of Call”, in which students will be introduced to the languages of four countries, with emphasis on words and phrases useful to the traveler. 93 Robert Lambert Chartley Ward Linda Keefe Susan Robertson Students aren’t the only ones who do things behind teacher’s backs. VARSITY DEFENSE 130 VARSITY FOOTBALL John Mares eyes another fallen Jaguar. Robinson inches forward for another first down The Madison stands overflowed with spirited Robinson fans for the opening game of Robinson’s first varsity season. The Rams fought hard, and ran and hit well, but a few mistakes and some bad breaks cost them the game. Madison es¬ tablished a 6-0 lead during the first quarter and scored again before half time. The Rams’ defense came on strong in the second half. Through team effort, Mike Chamberlin was afforded the honor of scoring the first touchdown in Robinson’s varsity football history. The season’s second game saw the Rams facing some of their old team¬ mates from Oakton High. Oakton’s ex¬ perience dominated, netting them a 32-7 win. The efforts of Monroe and an in¬ terception by Spaete pleased Robinson fans. The first home game under new field lights gave Rams backers something to shout about. Falls Church bowed to strong defensive efforts, and to the ex¬ ceptional offensive play of Gardner and Chamberlin. The Rams joined other district teams in bowing to powerful Fairfax 37-0. The powerful Annandale Atoms got what they least expected — a real battle! Robinson, supposedly an easy team to defeat due to lack of experience, held the Atoms to fourteen points. Monroe ' s field goal netted Robinson’s three points. The Rams socked it to arch-rival, neighbor West Springfield in a dazzling offensive dis¬ play. The Spartans ' efforts to hold the Rams were to no avail. A recovered Spartan fumble set up the Rams’ first score. Gluchowski stopped a Spartan drive and their field goal attempt was blocked by Spaete. Pat Morris scored six more points for the Rams. Right: Tough blocking produces extra yards. A Spirit Week which saw the main lobby plastered with banners and decorated windows preceded Robinson’s Homecoming game with for¬ midable Stuart. An inspired team climaxed the week by defeating the Raiders in an exciting game. Pat Morris began the effort that later saw Captain John Monroe intercept a Raider pass and run 51 yards to score again. Stuart, having scored during the first half, played a catch-up game and scored again. With just seconds left, Stuart’s attempt to win with a two-point conversion was doomed by Tony Ferrara’s deflection of the attempted Raider pass. What a night for Robinson tans! Robinson fans saw the efforts of Lambert, Mares, and Monroe prevent Jefferson from getting long yardage in the season’s ninth game. Tom Cady scored for Robinson after a Mares interception, but the Colonials scored twice late in the second half, winning 14-7. The last game of the season found the Rams in the Wakefield stadium. First down attempts failed repeatedly and Wakefield won 27-0. Rams JV players were brought into the game for their first taste of varsity play. The struggle to be first over a course of two-and-a-half miles of rugged terrain is a true test of strength and endurance — heart, lungs, and legs strain with every footfall. This season it paid off. Coach Wells’ varsity runners won the district first place trophy, were second in the county meet, fourteenth in the top twenty-six state teams, and were undefeated in dual meets. Bob Brewer 144 Junior varsity team members earned their own excellent season record, placing second in the district, and losing only once, to Wood- son, in dual meets — a bright promise of future varsity efforts. Competing in Division II of the Northern Virginia High School Swim League, the team compiled a 4-1 record, losing to eventual champion Woodson. The high point of the successful season was the winning of the Relay Carnival, in which the ex¬ treme depth of the team was indicated as it outdistanced its nearest rival by 45 points. The tea m finished third in individual championships and, through the efforts of Karen Vahouny, first in the girls in¬ vitational diving championship. High point winners were Mike Wilds and Susan Boyd. 188 189 RIFLE TEAM Led by high-scoring team captain Ben Washburn, Robin¬ son nimrods held weekly practices at Libby Range, Fort Belvoir, perfecting skills that made them formidable op¬ ponents. When Mr. Hartley and the SRA arranged for the Robinson faculty superstars (?) to match their skill (?) with none other than Washington’s own Redskins (!), tickets sold like hotcakes. The game took place in a field house jammed with spectators eager to see in person the stars of the football screen. And have students ever missed an opportunity to see faculty members and principals at play? A rather lopsided score favored the Skins, who proved to be as competitive on the basketball court as they were on the gridiron. 193 Autograph hunters filled the court at game’s end, besieging not only Redskins, but faculty members and even the Fairfax County police officers for autographs. 1 • t i ' C%i‘ lii prgnpw IKr , mzM Eiy. •■ ;.•■ - 4t J 195 Spring Sports. Conversations among last year’s juniors revealed their apprehension at the sub-school system, being housed with 7th and 8th graders, and the loss of close school friends. The majority accepted the new situation with minor grumbles and was soon involved in the building of the Robin¬ son image through academic and extra-curricular pursuits. The minority, however, never ceased grumbling and took little or no advantage of the opportunities Robinson offered, though they seemed to enjoy the personal freedom and liberties af¬ forded them. By attending mixed grade-level classes and multi-grade social events, seniors proved themselves tolerant of change and flexible in their attitudes. They came to realize that Robinson’s unique blend of individuals and wide-ranging academic programs were largely a result of their pioneer involvement with the Robinson idea. 219 Donald Kane Thomas Kardaras Donald Kauder David Kaus Vita Kawashima Thomas Kela Dawn Kelley Gary Kelley Janice Kimball Mark Kimbro Melissa Kirby Timothy Kirkpatrick Scott Kohnke Embrey Koonce Karen Kraus Steven Kruczek Gregory Kuhr David Lacquement Stephen Lambert John Lamond 220 Allen Lansing Louis Larsen Maureen Lathrop Victoria Law Deborah Leach Linda Lee Jaythel Lemmon Rachel Levine David Lewis John Lewis Frances Lexcen Rod Linares Marvin Pastel ought to know. Jones, Principal School Six, the youngest of Robinson’s best, got off to a marvelous start. This being the first year with seniors, new ex¬ periences were encountered each day. The anticipation of graduation gave everyone the feeling of both joy and sorrow; joy for the good times and experiences associated with Robinson, sorrow at having to leave them behind. The planning for graduation was time-consuming but exciting. Caps and gowns, the prom, announcements, picnics, parties, bac¬ calaureate, and the ceremony of receiving diplomas were all parts of this experience. School Six was bless ed with an abundance of outstanding students and faculty members. We had a wealth of junior and senior academicians, musicians, athletes, artists, thespians, and writers. Many of our students received honors from school, church, and community-centered programs indicative of our well- rounded student population. The concept of juniors and seniors sharing classes worked well. The few animosities brought forth in the beginning were soon lost and forgotten. Each student had his own role to play and was respected for it. Not only did teachers team to teach, students teamed to learn. For those of us staying behind one more year, we wish the very best to those who are moving on. —Donald W. Jones, Principal 241 Probing the pitfalls of English. Seniors worked together in their quest for recognition and achievement as thoughts about college, that perfect job, and their last year of high school raced in their heads. Plans for the first graduation, first class night, first junior-senior prom, first class gift - .these were the now problems of our seniors! Juniors had their concerns too! Class rings, the ring br eakfast, plans for the prom, the year ahead-it was hard to realize that we were almost there! We worked together in School Five. Faculty and students ex¬ perimented with ungradedness in the classroom, with family units of instruction, team-planning, team-teaching and with continuous progress education. A sub-school government worked hard to strengthen the student’s participation in his education and in his planning for the future. We participated in music and the arts. We were active in sports, and we were members of more than ninety different clubs and organizations. We faced a battery of tests - - - SCAT and STEP, PSAT, SAT, ACT, and we used up a pack of no. 2 pencils in the process! We had our moments of triumph and, no doubt, moments of frustration. But ours was a year to remember, a year of happiness and good times, of hopes for the future, of goodbyes and promises to return. —James C. SCHOOL FOUR FIRST PLACE HOMECOMING FLOAT Scdhiub SECRETARY MEDIA Clarijane Bush Keith Harvey James Ratliff GUIDANCE Hannah Alnutt 278 Rita M. Stone, Principal What’s lively, involved, and numbers 600+ ninth and tenth graders from O through Z? School IV, that’s what! A visitor pass¬ ing through the yellow-blue locker area would most certainly find a variety of activity — as early as 7:15 a.m. some students are sit¬ ting at the study carrels grappling with those last geometry problems before hurring off to class; a more lively but equally in¬ tent group is already into the second card game of the day, and a stop by the faculty workroom often reveals a busy mixture of students and teachers. There’s a refreshing unity and pride in School IV — the sort of togetherness that prompts both students and teachers to donate part of their lunch time to make flowers for the homecoming float, the sort of togetherness that made “the Whale of a Decade’’ a whale of success as the winner of the first Robinson float com¬ petition. This same pride is also evident as the various teaching teams attempt to organize the very best programs in English, math, social studies and science. Aware that people learn in many ways, the faculty offers a variety of learning strategies. A Robinson day ends for some with a bus ride home at 2:30, but for many others in School IV the day is starting anew. Some are rehearsing for THE CRUCIBLE, some are playing basket¬ ball, some are wrestling, others are assisting on the math tutor team, or making their very own film for English class. THRIVING IN A HOUSE DIVIDED Robert Sisson, PRINCIPAL Si® WM - ■ •i ' ; ' Robinson’s Super Seven opened its doors at Fairfax High on September 5, 1972. To these newest members of the Robinson student body, even being in a different building could not dim their enthusiasm. For Parents’Night, our Super Sevens said, “Robinson is . . . having your own lockers . . . changing classes . . . having more men teachers than we have had before . . . modern walls and rooms with carpeting . . . good here; I hope it will be just as good there ... a chance to start all over again ... a chance to be what you want ... to have more freedom in learning a lot while having more fun than you expected in school. Being in Robinson means growing up, meeting new people from different places and having a football team BEFORE you re in the ninth grade. —Robert Sisson, Principal SECRETARY 365 Clinton Abernathy Gizelle Abernathy Helen Ait Martin Albini Becky Altizer Robert Altizer Kris Anderson Thomas Andrews Christina Arbuckie Mike Arnold Roberto Arreaza Scott Ashmore Celeste Augst Scott Avery Charles Babcock Mike Balady Stephen Baberde Jim Banholzer Allen Barbour Glen Barbour Laura Barr Sub-School Seven SRA Officers President. Two by two, these February couples arrived at Robinson for a semi-formal dance evening of music and laughter. Sponsored by the Interact Club, the successful event indicated much organization beforehand. Decorations of cupid figures, gaily adorned tables, and a banquet of cookies and cake gave color and tastebud treat to an already anticipated evening. In keeping with the Robinson record, the band, Friends of the Family, was a winner with their up-to-date jangles and slow, soothing shuffles. Highlighting the evening was the crowning of Georgia Morgan as Sweetheart Queen.
