Robinson, Jr. Secondary School are startling examples of the massive expansion going on within Fairfax County. As new subdivisions spring up almost overnight, the need for larger schools multiplies. The county schools, saturated with students, eagerly looked forward to the opening of Robinson. With a capacity for 3900 students and 143 classrooms, labs, and centers, Robinson would relieve the overcrowding. Rut the growing population In the suburbs Is a chronic condition; for even without a senior class, Robinson opened crowded! 6 1 ' i- ' O ■.. Following crowds off the bus, onto the bus, Into the gym, out of the cafeteria, Into the.But Robinson Is supposed to be the school for the Individual—how do you make “I” out of all these “we’s”? March to the beat of a different drum? Sure, but don’t destroy the overall rhythm. Maybe venture Into new territory, explore, do some Independent study. Find a project you want to lavish your time and skills upon. If Robinson Is to truly be a school for the Individual, the students will have to make It so. As a philosopher once said, “Do your own thing and I will know you.” 9 t SCHOOL NAMED FOR YOUNG HERO The Fairfax County School Board voted to name the new multi-school complex on Sldeburn Road, then referred to as the Blue Oaks School, after Congressional Medal of Honor recipient James W. Robinson, Jr. While serving In Vietnam, Robinson lost his own life while selflessly rescuing other members of his unit. The U.S. Army Exhibit Unit, Office, Chief of Information, Department of the Army (now the U.S. Army Recruiting Support Center) prepared an exhibit for the opening of school. The photograph at right was taken from a portrait which appeared In this exhibit. James W. Robinson, Jr. 1940-1966 10 “Education is no longer a numbers game, a rope¬ jumping game, a game of learning pretty things to recite in nice company. It is more accurate to say that it is a game for ‘keeps’.” “Young people are tired of schools prescribing their needs and the answers to these needs without having a chance to say what they think they need. They are tired of all adult-made schools.” —from “New Dimensions For Education”, Mr. Coffey “The time is here for us to come together. You are being challenged by me to get with it and do your share in making this new and different school succeed in what it is undertaking.” Principal —Valor-Dictus, September 7, 1971. SAMUEL J. Robinson ' s dedication was an impressive event in that it involved nearly every student and faculty member. An Evening at the Musical Theater opened the festivities. The three nightly performances included dramatic, vocal, and dance selections from such Broadway hits as West Side Story, 1776, and Music Man. Wednesday took on a more academic atmosphere with sub-school -wide exhibits of student projects. The Science Fair displayed the best of students’ efforts to explore the scientific enigmas of our time. When parents visited classes on Thursday they were given exclusive guided tours. Robinson’s main hall was bedecked with gay banners and an exhibit produced by the Art Center, and the Foreign Language Center erected a kiosk of student-designed travel posters on one of the hall mushrooms. An aura of solemnity pervaded the formal dedication ceremonies, Sunday, March 12. The Robinson Symphonic Band performed Poetry and Power to open the event, and was later joined by members of the Robinson orchestras and choruses in a special presentation of Song of Democracy. The Olde Guard Fife and Drum Corps and the United States Army Drill Team marching presentations were colorful and moving tributes to our school’s namesake. Dr. S. John Davis, Superintendent of Schools, and William B. Wrench, Chairman of the School Board, introduced special guests and speakers. Curtis Bedke presented the student address; the featured speaker was James W. Robinson, Sr. The dedication activities continued into the following week with the East Coast premiere of The Beast in the Cave. This Children’s Theater musical was a highlight in Robinson ' s dramatic history, for Mr. Pat Jones of the drama department wrote, produced, directed, and starred in the original production. Many students were given a treat on Staculty Day, for on that occasion students took over the duties of the administration and faculty. The Extravaganza climaxed events. The talents of countless performers were incorporated into this spectacular production. As music swelled over the crowds it was clear that The Extravaganza was truly a grand finale. 19 20 - 22 WKBKBBBk ' Program Prelude .Poetry and Power-Reed .James W. All misconceptions that labeled teachers as prudish were shattered as the cast cavorted onstage and tossed spicy Thurber one-llners at the audience. Originality, expressiveness, and the exceptional use of the jazz combo made the production a tremendous success. Cast members Included were: Martha Clement, Marianne Webb, Rick Shelley, Jim Ballard, Bea Woolaver, Carole Scott, Tripp Clarke, and John Reese. 33 LIGHT CREW Picture Right—Thle Page: Back Row: Dan Kanney; Spika Shepard; Phil Hutchinson; Mike Pappas—Manager. That Robinson’s Varsity Hockey Team was able to meet that challenge was a commendable achievement. It reflects more than the long, strenuous hours of practice, the skillful teamwork, and the concentrated efforts of each player. It Is the result of the vibrant enthusiasm each girl brought to the team. Two girls who were notable examples of this spirit are Leslie Burke, who was voted Most Valuable Player, and Sheryl Lukaslk, who was voted Best Sportsman. With most of the members returning next season to form a nucleus of experience, the girls should blossom Into a winning team. MODERN DANCE CLUB 152 153 I 154 IDEIN To the ancient Greeks, the concept “to see as In an Image” was expressed by the single word—Ideln. The Ideln of Robinson offers an opportunity for students to share, through written word and art, their sensitive Impressions. Ideln has become an almost common word, for Ideln posters and boxes seem to be In every corner. Yet few appreciate the hard work and long hours of worry that go Into creating an art-literary magazine. Ideln has already become an Important part of the growing traditions of Robinson. The encouragement felt as a result of Mrs. Oglethorpe’s unflagging support .... The constant pressure of imminent deadlines . . . Amidst the bustle of the Christmas season students paused to collect canned goods for the needy. Showing concern for their own environment, the seventh and eighth graders worked to keep their hallways free of litter. Ecology was expanded to Include the out-of-doors. As the Spring of ’72 arrived, classes were sometimes conducted In Prince William Park. In the quiet woods, special meanings were realized for poetry, and science. Their active concern marks the beginning of a Number One Sub-School. %% %£, fc. Vi .v -? sys - W §ft0m ■ -. His efforts toward better communications, student control, and student leadership brought about many positive changes at Robinson. On February 9, Mr. James Moulton, formerly at Marshall High, became principal of Sub-School Five. Dr. Lonnie Hinkle, who left Robinson to become principal of the Woodson Adult Education School, was presented with a plaque from the Junior class, represented by President Kevin Farrell. FACULTY-JUNIORS BASKETBALL GAME 324 325 SUPPORTIVE SERVICES Imagine, II you can— 4000 students having to bring their own lunches to school every day. 4000 students saving all their trash so It cars be thrown away at home. 4000 students having to clean up after every game, match, play or concert that Is held. 4000 students having to look after all their aches and pains by themselves. , . Sound strange? Definitely. But maybe now the corps of workers that staff the kitchen and clinic and keep the school In general repair will be better appreciated. Taking care of 4000 students away from home Is an awesome Job. But does It have to be a thankless one? BUILDING MAINTENANCE Top Picture—Nigh!
