VARSITY BASKETBALL The Hawks 9 wins 8 loss season record was a disappointment to coach, players, and fans alike, especially considering the talent represented on the team. The season began auspiciously enough with the Hawks authori- tatively defeating the Wesleyan Eagles 74-56 behind the scoring of Ed Alvarez C37 pointsj and Sidney Wolf C24 pointsb. Ironically , it was to be subsequent losses to the Eagles that made the Hawks finish in fifth place . When it came time to face Division Champions-to-be Consuelo Escalona in mid-January, the Hawk line-up had shrunk to seven active players. Sid Wolf and Morey Rothenberg led the Hawks in scoring 82 points in one of the best games of the season. Three surprising on-the-road losses in January led up to encouraging wins in Feb- ruary over Baldwin, Rosey Roads, Ramey, and Antilles Military. The Haw s played another outstanding game, although again losing to Consuelo Escalona . The closingqlgame of the regular season found the Hawks tied at half-time with visiting Caribbean School but losing in t e second half. At season's end, three players had particularly impressive statistics: Morey Rothenberg, chosen for the PRHSAA All-Star team, scored an average of seventeen points in each game he pllayed and shot 56070 from the free throw line. Senior Sid Wolf tops the team by far in total points scored over t e season, with an 18 point average per g-lame, and shot 61070 from the foul line. Ed Alvarez had a fifteen point per game average and claimed top onors in the free throw department with a 67010 average. Joining Ed to orm nucleus for next year's team will be playmaker Lane Carnes, David Hood, and Ruben Priegues.
