In spite of enthusi- astic coaches and some real talent, and hampered by small size and inexperience, the Hawks were winless through four games. Perhaps the unkindest cut of all was an embarrassing defeat by Gabriela Mistral, a pub- lic school team playing its first football game . The Hawks looked sharp in their brand new uniforms, but every- one wondered - when will they start to play football? Then it happened . The Hawks held the Commonwealth Comets scoreless through the middle of the second quarter. Even Chuy Esparza was worried. Mistakes caught up with our team at the end of the second quarter, but they managed to score twice and even losing felt pretty good . The following week saw our boys begin to get it together with a 38-0 whitewashing of Manati, but the best was yet to come. The Hawks' first home game under the lights was a rematch with Roosey - but this counted! The shutout victory was a triumph coaches, players and fans won't soon forget, and it set up a fine finish to the season, marred only by an unexpected and rather humiliating loss to San Antonio. After walking over AMA, the Hawks won the finale against the Chickenhawks of St. Thomas with an exciting finish. With the score tied and less than a minute to play it was all up to a lone kicker. Sid Wolf put it through the uprights and the Hawks had finished a very respectable . 500 season.
