611155 Hlstury THE FUTURE TRAIN The class of 1953 d1d not jump on the Freshman tra1n after It had started We helped to lay the foundatlon and got on board when the f1rst car pulled mto the stat1on I recall so well those early days when we f1rst boarded the tra1n S1XtY one of us were able to get off to a good start because we had such a w1se and understand1ng conductor to gutde us Wmth the sage counsel of our own Mrs W1lla Buchanan West we were able to choose a f1ne tra1n crew who d1d much to keep the wheels of progress turnxng Jerry Dean our able and courageous presxdent eng1neered our course over the rough and un charted journey ln sp1te of our greeness our class made rapld progress We gamed a strong foot hold ln Enghsh mathematlcs h1story and other subjects Whlle the Freshman class was fun we had to study to keep rn our berths but the hours of hard study were counterbalanced by the fun we had 1n athlet1cs and other sports Part1c1pat1on 1n these aCt1V1t16S has cemented frxendshlps that wxll be strong when these halls of learnmg w1ll be long for gotten Many of our classmates won honors of wh1ch our class 15 justly proud Mary C McCall was elected May Queen 1n our Freshman year Benme Leake won a runmng race and Ruby Lee Ellerbe was chosen as the neatest gxrl 1n the class When we boarded our Sophomore tra1n our crew had changed Our chosen adv1sor Mrs West was agam conductor and Mable McRae became class pres1dent Our Sophomore tram ran smoothly and effxclently because so many people worked hard at so many d1fferent th1ngs Of the th1rty s1x Sophomores many jo1ned the Glee Club some jomed the Basketball Team others became 1dent1f1ed w1th the N H A N F A the Dramatxc Club Baseball Club and a few talented mus1c1ans became members of our School Band Barbara Buchanan and Jane Sm1th won pr1zes for des1gn1ng and makmg the best garments ln the Sophomore class Jul1a Kendall won a pr1z.e for hav1ng the best home econom1cs project and Jerry Dean won a pr1ze for makmg a lamp 1n Shop Work So grew the Sophomore year Wxth the begznnmg of the Jun1or year several changes were noted The crew who had entered the Freshman and Sophomore tra1n now occupxed the Jumor cat 1n the 'Future Tram To pres1de over us we returned to our f1rst love Jerry Dean Many who had boarded the Freshman tra1n w1th seven of our or1g1nal s1xty one Mrs West was st1ll our beloved conductor and our own dear prmclpal Mr Dean was ever near to gwe encouragement and cheer on our journey W1thout h1s w1sdom and sage counsel we feel that we could never have made the journey Our class contxnued to partlcxpate xn the extra currxcular act1v1t1es of our school Jerry Dean James Braddy Weldon Lew1s Douglas Games John McEach1n J Herv1e Lee Jones Sarah Srruth and Barbara Buchanan d1st1ngu1shed themselves on the basketball court The boys also became out standmg players on the baseball team The most 1mportantsoc1al event ofthe year was the Junlor Sen1or Prom wh1ch was a gala occaslon Our greatest expermence was when we were on probat1on for the French Club We gave many partxes Mrs West gave us a surprlse Chnstmas party The Jun1ors helped sponsor a Chrxstmas party at wh1ch t1me we sang Chr1stmas songs 1n French At commencement t1me James Braddy was awardeda French Medal for hav1ng the h1ghestaverage m French Barbara Buchanan was awarded the H1story Medal Mary McNa1r rece1ved a prxze for the best constructed garment Mary McCall was awarded a prxze for the preparat1on of food 1n home eco nomxcs whxle Julza Kendall rece1ved the prlze for bemg the best worker 1n the N H A At the end of the year we were proud to know we had attamed the status of future Semors For our fmal year we agam boarded the Future Tra1n' Mrs West was st1ll our fa1thful and be loved conductor Agaxn we elected our h1ghly esteemed and eff1c1ent Jerry Dean as class presxdent Our number had now decreased to n1neteen but we were not daunted We stroye by our conduct as Semors to so xmpress those commg after us that they would des1re to emulate our example and follow m our footsteps We hope that we have so endeared ourselves to the members of the faculty that they w1ll long re member the good we have accomphshed and soon forget the many l1ttle annoyances we may have caused them Graduatzon IS m the a1r and we feel that our xmmed1ate destmanon 15 1n s1ght We reahze that th1s 13 not the end but at the conclusxon of thxs journey we w1ll step out of 'School Llfe mto L1fe's School Class H1stor1an Juha B Kendall ll ll 1 V 1 D ' .
