Ay Mie SPtudenfa of? P lv eifa J)(e eifart College cT Through the power of sustaining prayer and deep conviction B. T. Roberts began his dream of an institution uniquely dedicated to the promotion of Christian education for men as well as women. This ideal has survived many fires, financial crises, and public indifference. From its lowly beginning Roberts Wesleyan has been struggling through a maze of blind alleys, dead ends, and open doors in trying to show the harmony between science and Christianity — between the discoveries of the one and the doctrines of the other.” 3 The professors influenced and took responsibility for the life of each student, both educationally and spiritually. . . for we shall not only be jealous of their mental improvement, but we shall also watch for their souls as those who must give account.” Daily exercise in open air is required of all. Students will retire at 10 and arise at 6. Good, nourishing food is provided without stint.” 1869 6 North Chili is a quiet little village about a mile north of the New York Central R.R. It is in the midst of a beautiful and healthy country.” 1869 7 etliccdUm The number of years that a man has lived does not always determine the amount of impact that he has on the lives of others. Such an impact from one so young has been recognized by the Senior class. Therefore, we, in appreciation dedicate this yearbook to William Bippes, who has been interested, active, and concerned as a professor, advisor, and friend. 10 'jddwdriAAl intwn and Sf’awdty teuderdk fwuj ... One of the more perceptive educational writers said a couple of years ago that A college is people, ideas, and a place — and in that order.” This describes the emphasis that I believe has characterized this school throughout its history. It has been a place where a concern for people and for their intellectual, spiritual, and physical development has been basic. It has been a place where young people could confront significant ideas in an atmosphere of honest explorations. It has been a place where previously held ideas could be examined and tested and where a rational philosophy of life could be forged. Buildings deteriorate and sometimes are replaced. Campus landmarks are altered and may become obscure with the passing of years. New buildings rise and the physical environment inevitably changes. But Roberts Wesleyan will continue to exist meaningfully for its students as long as the emphasis continued to be on PEOPLE. Theodore Scolt Ronald Jickt-on Public Relations AsU. I 1.1m Linda Ammerinan Sophomore 80 Homecoming signals the welcome confrontation of the past, present and future of Roberts for a brief, warm moment. The gentle, guiding traditions that have molded Roberts into its present state, mesh with the precedents of today and the potential of tomorrow. Mrs. Francis Cooke, an alumnus and precedent-setting member of the Board of Trustees, spoke at Homecoming chapel, opening the weekend in an appropriate and timely manner. The talent show on Friday evening added to the festive atmosphere with good participation, talent and side-splitting antics. Saturday morning allowed time for students and alumni to mingle with each other, and a great deal of interest in both sides of the college experience provided a friendly atmosphere tinged with mounting excitement about the afternoon activities. Following a motorcade of Queen candidates, attendants and escorts, the coronation of Miss Eleanor Kirk as Homecoming Queen of 1971 took place. The athletic competition provided hard-fought contests that made both young and old periodically breathless as our cross-country and soccer teams registered a double victory. The Harriers defeated the Rochester Track Club and the Raiders soccer team defeated the cver-competitive Houghton Highlanders 2-1. The day’s activities were terminated beautifully by the Alumni Banquet shared by students and alumni alike, a Fine Arts concert featuring Judy Coen and the award-winning movie A Man Called Horse.” _ Queen Eleanor and Escort Richard Herman Senior Candidate Jacqueline Bucher and Escort Willard Evans Junior Candidate Catherine Reeves and Escort Chris Lanphear Junior Candidate Rebecca Yansick and Escort Peter Rich Sophomore Attendant Linda Ammerman Not pictured: Escort Todd Basom On one dark, cold night in October Roberts students emerged from their dorms masquerading as their favorite characters. Mummies, soldiers and even worms stalked, marched, and crawled over to Garlock to watch frightening flicks. Costumes were judged for originality and the best ones were awarded prizes. The highlight of the evening was a visit by all to the haunted house (alias — the faculty house) that had its own built-in spooks, witches and goblins who took delight in scaring their most welcome visitors. A great time was had by those who took part in this Halloween evening of fun. 84 86 If you can't beat thorn, join them. 87 s 'jL CWAC An Open Door was the theme for the twentieth annual Christian World Action Conference. Dr. Akbar Adbul-Haqq, missionary evangelist from India, was guest speaker for the conference. As he spoke at the services during the week, both the college and the community were impressed by the great need for the mission field. 96 99 Since music plays such an influential part in everyone’s life, we look upon the music department and its students with an admiration for their long hours of practice, and with an appreciation for the harmonious fruits of their labor. 100 101 102 Win ter Weekend Winter Weekend, as usual, provided a two day package of fun and festivities. Friday night students filled Cox Hall for a viewing of 'Taint Your Wagon,” a delightful comedy of the California gold rush. Coed volley-ball games launched Saturday’s activities while the afternoon brought a victory for Roberts Varsity basketball team as they defeated their opponents in the Ken Curtis Memorial game. Evening brought more excitement as students got ready for a banquet at the dpwntown Holiday Inn. In addition to the formality of the occasion, the coronation of the Winter Holiday king and queen took place on the main stairway of the hotel. A heartbreaking loss to Alfred, in which our Raiders were defeated with only thirty seconds remaining in the game, could not deter us from defeating arch-rivals Fredonia State and Houghton. The Houghton victory was particularly exciting as our Raiders fought back throughout the second half for an easy victory. Leading Coach Fraser’s squad through victory and defeat was senior forward Willard Evans, who for the second consecutive year led the team in scoring and rebounding. Perhaps the fondest memory was the Ken Curtis Memorial game in which our team and the alumni team participated, the proceeds from which go to a scholarship fund to give financial aid to needy athletes. HE MEANT HER LIFE FOR GOOD Mrs. Barbara Muller . . . Above everything else, Barbara gave us an unforgettable example of the happy Christian. Faith in God and His goodness was the axis around which her life revolved, and in the difficult circumstances through which God called her, she knew that He meant her life for good and meant it intensely. Finding the meaning of life was her meat and drink — now she knows that meaning in infinite dimensions. Because we recognize a little of this, she is forever a part of us and of what we shall become. That we shall see her again I hold to be as certain as that the night ends in the radiance of the morning. She shall not grow old as we who are left grow old. Age shall not wither nor the years condemn. I would like to wish you something that is harder to come by. So I am going to wish you meaning in your life. And meaning is not something you stumble across, like the answer to a riddle or the prize in a treasure hunt. Meaning is something you build into your life. You build it out of your own past, out of your affections and loyalties, out of the experience of mankind as it is passed on to you, out of your own talent and understanding, out of the things you believe in, out of the things and people you love, out of the values for which you are willing to sacrifice something. The ingredients are there. You are the only one who can put them together into that unique pattern that will be your life. Let it be a life that has dignity and meaning for you! If it does, then the particular balance of success or failure is of less account. — John W.
