CHUBkON AN Roberts Wesleyan College North Chili, New York Editor: Esther Ritter i The life of the campus is a composite. In every fleeting, darting glance of time. Equilibrium and stability are sought. The tenor of college life is defined by this balance. Today is a paraphrase of yesterday. Our task is veneration for the lesson and legacy. Usage saves the real things for another day. 2 Change inheres in mortality. Innovation and novelty are the catalysts of progress. Life is not inert; and should one miss the shifts, there is no real redemption of the loss. Experience is compounded into potential; The task is moral armament. The axioms and postulates of life are learned. 4 Application is the eternal postscript of preparation. A paragraph of print is translated into a handshake. Thought is converted into speech. 5 A person is an instance of a 6 ,f AyV, { At v y iv'• V v Sj, •' %' S' jr y'u ✓ i , v, ;- Union is a dominant sense of corporate resolution. div . It mends the fissure torn by selfhood. Intention is grafted, and community arrives. 7 Quests • are conducted by individuals: Alone. And a man would be an exile on another road, An intruder in another home, An alien at another gate. One cannot be a stranger to his ownness. 8 Involvement— The blending of one life with another: We. The melding of life with intention: Purpose. The merging of purpose with ambition: Action. A compilation into the amalgam of life: Love. { 0 v v 'T.jb P’ ')K 9 Milling obscure corridors of information. Students submit to the discipline of study. A masterpiece is more than dimestore paint and canvas. A poem is more than paper and ink. Duty is the agony of priorities. 10 There comes a surcease, A stillness from the fury of the storm. And so it is with undergraduate scholarship: One surrenders to impulse without compromise. There is a catharsis of the strain. II Success is the objective of every project. The end of every plan, every pragmatic prayer— Yet, achievement is the gift of few. Ever the rare tiling, the esteemed prize. 12 Fistfuls of soot are tossed against an evening sky, Darkness spills into light, Day wades into night. Failure testifies to man’s fallibility. And is the signature of his humanity. 13 The annals of history are a record of duration; Such moments are all one can possess. The instant is all one has to call his own. 14 In autumn come the mottled shades of dying things. Singed with parting, shunning life: A time there comes that means departure. 15 This is the generative dawn of Easter, When Christ conies to meet the epic inwardness of life. When the spectre becomes a man. The meaning ever lives on in faith, And life is substantial: At last definitive. 16 'r David L. R ogers Dedication In appreciation, the Class of 1969 gratefully dedicates this annual to David Rogers. We cannot snap our gratitude into a photograph, cast it into some rhythmic lines of verse, present its summation in a paragraph of adequate print, give it finality in a yearbook layout. But perhaps we can suggest our recollections of patient interest, continual encouragement, certain belief. Perhaps, by implication, we can convey some pastel shade of our concern, and its variant colorations. To this end, we offer this dedicatory gesture. The Active____ The Academic The People ... His topic was concerned with characteristics of various types of college students. Christian World Action Conference Steering Committee Chairman: Gery Helsby Vice Chairman: Grant Walsh Advisor: Rev. Glenn Hughes Charlie Canon James Hum bard Judith Haines Linda Smith CWAC Weekend again proved to be a success as students were presented with the needs of missions and were challenged by the mis sionary speakers who represented various countries and mission hoards. The main speaker for the evening meetings was Reverend William Gillam, Vice President of the Oriental Missionary Society. 31 First place—Seniors Second place—Sophomores Third place—Juniors Fourth place—Freshmen 35 Kin and Queen of Winter Weekend: Ken and Marcia Despite a lack of snow, this year’s winter weekend was exciting and different. Beginning the weekend’s festivities, students enjoyed a pancake breakfast, class sport competition and a buffet supper. In the evening, all enjoyed a vigorous basketball game between the Haiders and the Alumni. Climaxing the Winter Weekend activities was the crowning of Ken Hockenberry and Marcia Neumann as Winter Weekend King and Queen 1969. Especially for you was the theme of this year’s All-College Banquet held on February 14 in the Roman Room of the Villa Capris. The entertainment was provided by Kent, Cliff, and Phil, a popular trio from Ashury College, Wilmore, Kentucky. 38 39 Band in the Round In 1960 an article in one of the music periodicals concerned a Conccrt-Band-in-the-Round which was being sponsored by the University of Akron for surrounding high schools. In the 1965-66 school year, Mr. Shepfer inaugurated the first War Memorial extravaganza. Each year there have been from five to eight visiting bands participating. Other features have included the Roberts Wesleyan Chorale, Louis Noble, noted Rochester bagpiper, the Inter-Junior Choir of Rochester and celebrity emcees such as Bill Haley, Jerry Carr and Eddie Dunn. 40 Faculty Recitals Paul Berry, tenor Inscape T. King Lome and Queen Mary Lee 44 Junior-Senior Banquet The Townc House Restaurant was the setting for the Junior-Senior Banquet. Featured entertainment was the Word of Life Ensemble, The New Creation. 45 Baccalaureate A traditional part of graduation exercises is the Annual Baccalaureate Service. Dr. Orville S. Walters, Director of Health Services at the University of Illinois delivered the ninety-ninth Baccalaureate Address. 46 Commencement At the nineteen hundred and sixty-eight Commencement, Major General Harold K. Johnson, Army Chief of Staff, brought the graduation address. 49 One of the more perceptive educational writers said recently that “a college is people, ideas, and a place—and in that order.” This describes the emphasis at Roberts Wesleyan College. Our college is a place where a concern for people and for their intellectual, spiritual, and physical development is basic. It is a place where young people confront significant ideas in an atmosphere of honest exploration. It is a place where previously held ideas are examined and tested and where a sound philosophy of life can be forged. Roberts Wesleyan College is also a locale, full of nostalgic bits and pieces which add warmth and color to the college experience. The college experience that never penetrates bevond this level, however, typifies the perennial sophomore and not the truly educated person. Buildings deteriorate and sometimes are replaced. New buildings spring up and the physical environment changes over the years, but Roberts Wesleyan continues to exist in the hearts and lives of the students whose lives it has enriched, because the emphasis has been on people and ideas. The goal of this administration, as with those of the past, is to hew to a single over- arching purpose—the intellectual, spiritual, and physical wellbeing of its students. To this task which enhances the stature of the college and gives it direction we—the trustees, the administration, the faculty— dedicate our best efforts. Dr. and Mrs. Lawrence R. Regrettably, this lone defeat at the hands of the R.I.T. Harriers ended a remarkable winning streak of 56 consecutive dual and triangular meets. This reign of victories, dating back to 1962. brought well-deserved fame and recognition to our campus. Among the highlights of this season were the triumphs over rival Buffalo State, LcMoyne, and Brockport State. In addition, this team set the course record for lowest combined time of five men in the LeMoyne meet. Injuries jinxed the Raiders all season long, and they lost the crown of the LeMoyne Invitational, which Roberts had won for seven straight years. They also lost the New York State Championship meet, which the team had won for five straight years. In the Buffalo State meet held on our course, the Raiders emerged victorious after a tough struggle by a scant three points. The next week the team faced a power-packed LeMoyne team. After a grueling race, our Harriers survived the test and added another victory. Roberts was then upset by R.I.T. on a challenging six-mile course which broke the winning streak. Tim Duffy and Ken Demster thus ending their sparkling careers will graduate, leaving Coach Anderson with a tremendous rebuilding job for next season. However, experienced men such as Ken Armagost, Paul Muongi, Charlie Canon, Ken Domerese, and Bill Lazarus will help lighten his load. 188 Four-year Icttcrman ... consistent performer ... Ed Webster shows excellent form while sprinting to the finish line. Soccer fit'. COACH: Jack Pascoe; TRI-CAPTAINS: Gery HcUby, Toni Tyler, Naim Tannous. This year the Roberts Wesleyan soccer men received NAIA recognition to highlight a very successful ’68 soccer season. In the Section Seven Play-offs, the Raiders lost to a strong Plattsburgh State team that went on to finish third in the nation. Despite the loss of four-year goalie Dale Easterly, the Raiders finished the season with a highly commendable 9-3 record under first-year coach Jack Pascoe. The Raider defense, led by senior fullback Gery Helsby, was credited with three shut-outs. Allen Kangethe led the Raider attack throughout the season, finishing with eight goals and six assists. Coach Pascoe has strong hopes toward fielding another powerful squad next season with the return of fourteen lettermen. 194 SCORES RWC Opponent 3 Houghton......................0 3 Buffalo State................ 2 2 McMaster .....................0 1 Oneonta ......................5 4 Guelph .......................1 0 Geneseo.......................3 6 St. John Fisher...............1 5 Harpur .......................3 4 LeMoyne ......................1 5 Utica ........................0 2 R.I.T.........................1 2 Plattsburg ...................4 Graduating Seniors GERY HELSBY Four-year letterman ... rugged competitor ... three-time All-State selection at fullback ... team player ... tri-captain. In addition to receiving the honor of acceptance into the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference, Coach John Fraser was also able to get his recruiting program into high gear and bring to campus the most talented group of freshmen ever to enroll here. Roberts played a demanding schedule which meant traveling over 4,000 miles for engagements with top NAIA teams. The Raiders rebounded from a disastrous early season of only one win during its first nine starts to finish with a respectable 11-14 record, including the win over the alumni. After their poor start, the Raiders seemed to find themselves and put the pieces together with consecutive wins over RIT and Brockport State, thus keeping their dominance of Rochester area quintets. The team entered the Monroe County Tournament as defending champions, but surrendered the crown to Brockport State. As runners-up, the Raiders benefited from great efforts from Ralph Roach and Dave Scribner, who both earned a berth on the all-tournament team. A convincing win over rival Buffalo State was an outstanding highlight of the season. The year ended with a win over Geneseo State and an especially sweet victory over Fredonia State, bringing the basketball careers of seniors Paul Crowell, Ken Curtis, and Dave Scribner to an end. Crowell scored 485 points this season and placed himself fourth on the all-time Roberts points-per-season scoring list, and his 303 rebounds placed him in sixth position for most rebounds in a season. The season record was five wins to one loss over the course of six dual meets. The main spark of this year’s squad proved to he the frosh newcomers, including Lucious Stephens, Allen Kangethe, Dave Markell, Ken Armagost, and Boh Pattison, all of whom worked to establish several new school records. Their efforts, combined with the hard work of such strong veterans as Gcrv Helsby, Tim Duffy, Ken Demster, Glenn Schultz, Paul Mroz, Jim Lusk, Pete Field, and Bill Mackmcr, enabled the team to begin the writing of a new chapter in Roberts Wesleyan track history. The highlight of the season was the surprise upset by Roberts over a strong R.I.T. squad, a meet in which the R.W.C. freshmen tallied up five school records in the sprints, hurdles, and relays. With such substantial young blood, Rol erts can look forward to an exciting track showing over the next few years. Seniors leave a college, and it is never only a dispersement but just another stage of an already fluctuating pattern, the discarding of old sympathies, the unfolding of new ones. We have accumulated no indifferent affections, cultivated no undifferentiated loyalties, but we love the place for some reason. And. perhaps, this is the reason that it is so difficult to cram the past into the present, for we are packing old clothing into new suitcases and are passing mutely, with a sense of wonder, through closing doors. And you have.been aware of great acts of human kindness-the Marshall Plan, Berlin air lift, the Peace Corps. There have been horrible inventions to kill man, like the hydrogen bomb. And marvelous inventions to save his life, like polio vaccine. Man has flown higher and dived lower than ever before. He has traveled faster and farther. All in your lifetime. Advances have often been striking, and reversals tragic, but you Bad no part in them. You were only a spectator. Now, you have a chance to play a responsible role in events of your generation-events that promise to overshadow anything that went before. Unlike the modest opportunities of the past, yours will he limited only by two key factors. One is education; the other resourcefulness-keys that together will enable you to unlock any combination; to plan, to weigh, to judge, to think. Most of all to communicate. Your school has tried to do its part. Now it's up to you. Growing organizations like Xerox, leaders in mankind's continuing search for better communications, are looking for educated talent-the more educated the better Through the science of xerography, we have made enormous strides durin your lifetime.
