We would remember the past with an understanding of what has been and especially with an appreciation of the aspiring student- for we were once that student. We would live the present with the deepest awareness of God and of humanity, for it is this that makes us truly alive. As graduate nurses, we are now at the crossroads of the future. We look to the years before us with the hope that they will bring peace and a cessation to human suffering. We would dream of a better world, filled and enriched lives, and true happiness for all mankind. The Class of 1972 3 DEDICA T10 Dear Mrs. Combs, As an expression of our deep gratitude, we, the Class of 1972, dedicate this volume of the NUCLEUS to you. As our instructor, your knowledge has further enlightened us in Medical- Surgical Nursing. Your personal enthusiasm and willingness to help has been an inspiration to us when we most needed it. A part of you will remain with each of us. And so it is on this memorable occasion that we present this book to you, hoping that it will serve as a small token of our sincere thanks for all you have done for us. Without your understanding, patisnce, and wisdom we would not have been able to experience the personal growth that has brought us to the threshold of our professional lives. You have seen us as children, and now you see us as young adults with a whole new concept of what's happen- ing and fresh, new ideas upon which to build our lives. lt seems like only yesterday you watched as we e fsbarked on our new dream. . .that dream is now a reality! You have pro- vided the sympathetic understanding we've needed so many times, as well as a ready smile and cheerful wit. We deeply appreciate the many thoughtful deeds you've performed, usually at inconvenience to yourself. You played a major role in our lives as a friend and confidant, sharing our joys and sorrows. Thank you, and from each of us, may your future be filled with the happiness you so richly deserve! 6 7'?fQ7,N I 5 MR. H. JONES - ADMINISTRA TOR bb, I have always maintained that the most important member of the hospital team is the nurse. The success of the entire hospital care program depends directly upon the indivi- dual nurse's ability and judgement. As a highly skilled professional providing contin- uous bedside care, you embody the most important aspect for our existence as a health care institution. It is imperative, because of this responsibility, that you have the benefit of the best possible education. As members of the 68th graduating class of the Robert Packer Hospital School of Nursing, you have completed one of the finest nursing education programs available. At a time when many problems have forced other schools to cut back or close, we have continued to improve on our concept of instruction which combines the best of a variety of educational methods. The Class of 1972 in particular represents a high point in the evolution of our pro- gram. You were the first class to begin college credit work at Elmira College. Your's was the first class to utilize the new Carl V, S. Patterson Education Building for the en- tire three years of your instruction. Your affiliations at specialized hospitals in New York and Philadelphia have provided extra depth to the broad education in nursing you have received here. This, combined with clinical experience in the hospital, has pro- vided a firm base on nursing principles which will serve as a foundation upon which to build future knowledge acquired through both your practice and continuing education. I am confident that you will each take full advantage of the preparation you have received here to distinguish yourself professionally and to exercise the compassion necessary in caring for the sick and injured. Good luck. 8 MISS HELEN R. SA UNDERS DIRECTOR OF NURSI TO THE CLASS OF 1972 You are about to begin your career in Nursing for which you have so carefully prepared. lt is the hope of those who have guided you in your educational program that you will maintain and continue to develop the high ideals you have established. You entered the Nursing profession to learn to serve others. May you preform this service wisely and compassionately and remember that your only purpose in Nursing is for service to others. As you view your future you must consider the changes which are essential if all people are to be served. We hope you will play an active role in setting the direction of the inevitable changes in the delivery of health services. Your contribution will be important. Take it seriously. Your faculty and I are proud of you and wish you happiness and success as you leave the School of Nursing. 9 BOARD OF DIRECTORS I Mike Yanuzzi, jay Landy, Bird Sumner, Donald Gleckner, Slade Palmer, jam est Lehr. Pres.J Our Freshman year. . .filled with apprehension, frustration, fears, tears, and homesicknessg but made up for by all the good times filled with fun, laughter, love, and a sense of class spirit. We made it through our first year and now we look forward to two more years of learning and learning experiences. Impressions of all dimensions from small and great and from bad to good were left with us. One of these impres- sions follows as written by one who wrote from her heart: Dr. Lindsay As you stand before me, I can see wisdom flowing out of your well educated dialogue. I gaze in wonder, not knowing if Iwill gather the knowledge you have now in all my lifetime. I look again and I see a meek smile, yet warm and sincere. Yes, you understand not only about endoplasmic reticulum and ATP conversion but you also have an insight on eople. Iiflany a time you've given strength to those who need it--strength to learn, continue and serve. I only wish everyone could know and appreciate you as I do. Someday, maybe years from now, someone may ask an anatomy question and your students will see the wisdom of your face appearing before them. . .then that knowledge drilled in so slyly will return. Love for human life is the most important aspect in nursing and you, Dr. Lindsay, are the one that helped produce many a good nurse! A man shall leave his mother and a woman leave her home, and they shall travel on to where the two shall be as one. As it was in the beginning, is now, and 'til the end, woman draws her life from man and gives it back again. And there is love, there is love. Then what's to be the reason for becoming man and wife ?
