ASKEVV Director of Education Robert Packer School of Nursing Teachers College, Columbia University to THE cLAss or T963 Your theme, What Is A Student Nurse? is fitting and proper for a yearbook devoted to memories of your years as a student. But as you prepare to leave behind your student days and start on your career as a profes- sional nurse and a contributing member of society, my concern is with the future. As practitioners of professional nursing, you must be leaders and this brings responsibility. Leadership does not consist of calling names and desk pounding, T but of something of the heart and head. Bad deport- T ment is never to be confused with strength of character. If a person is sure of himself and the integrity of the processes he has used to reach his decision, he can be strong, but he can be mild. Secondly, even when you are supposedly leaving behind your student days, you must continue to study, for when we cease to learn we cease to be interesting. To learn is to teach one's self, for whether we gain intellectual power and knowledge by observation, by reading, or by listening, the result is the outcome of our self-activity. Then I am concerned about attitudes. We all have attitudes, the important thing is that we have proper attitudes about a vast number of things. If the person has proper attitudes he is a person of good action. But right here seems to be one of the biggest blocks. The thing which has caused more failure is not matters of aptitude so much as matters of attitude. Attitude results in either good or bad group and inter-group relationships. Let us think for a moment about understanding one's self and others, and doing something about it. Behavior is not really too complex in its causes, because primarily all behavior is aimed at the satisfaction of certain needs and the seeking toward a goal or number of goals. Our degree of success in reaching a goal frequently determines our emotional stability and much of what we call personality. Dr. Margaret Gerard has said, The quality of what you do for other people as a nurse de- pends on what kind of a person you are as well as on what kind of knowledge you have. This statement could be even more meaningful if considered in the light of what we do with people, since this is more consistent with our concept of self-directed activity. And finally, we must have purpose, for without this there is nothing. Instead of hunting for many reasons why something cannot be done, let us find one reason why it can. The poet Sharpe gives good advice to all of us in this verse: Each is given a bag of tools, A shapeless mass, A book of rules, And each must make- Ere life is flown- A stumbling block Or a stepping stone. furligfgi1Vficg3i:l'ZfwZSSdC1?1ep persorglal satisfactiort, to continue in growth and development, and to .
