L74 s Hi ary Today is H10 fomorrozz' we worried about y0sfcrrlay', Hlfl Lady of the Lampl' held it high and the beams fell on September eleventh nineteen thirty-nine, when thirty-seven girls with thirty-seven dreams entered Robert Packer Training School . . . the kind and gentle hostess helped relieve tl1e strai11 . . . a smile broke wl1ich grew wider three days later to include corn, hot- dogs, marshmallows, and watermelon while on the banks of Susquehanna. Une month later we viewed with cider a11d doughnuts one happy month of training . . . then they measured and measured and out of this grew uniforms . . . o11e mid-November ll101'l1l1lg' feigning confidence we we11t on duty to face tl1e new . . . Margaret Dempsey left us soon . . . we missed her and all regretted the break in our class . . . Christmas recreation included a party . . . and Santa with ,his pack was there . . . even Probies could see through that X-ray technician. . . January twenty-fifth the S. S. Probie was launched into our first social success. . . lVe danced and laughed often because we knew in three days our capless though knowledgitudinous heads a new dig- nity would wear . . . but ere that coveted cap was won, Blanche Down packed her suitcase and left another empty seat. . . HI solemnly pledge myself before God -the sound of our many voices echoed back the beat of quickening hearts as with pride and fear we accepted new responsibilities . . . Mary Green accepted other vows . . . Jane Gustin and Gertrude Smith made a double . . . and we marched into our Intermediate year of study, sleighbells, capes, and night duty shifts . . . losing Virginia Ogden in our onward move to Seniority . . . Here we won a day off each week . . . and from a nucleus of dancing, raffles, and candy our yearbook grew . . . Virginia Robyler left . . . Now each must seek separate paths and yet be united in the common bond of victory. -Jussi u OAIVIP, ,42 u--n-..- - -nu-n-The Nucleus 1942-Page Twenty-seven..-...- - - - -

Pre lM?llf'.5' Messe e E, the members of the class of 1942, are now approaching' an eagerly anticipated event, the climax of our many Varied du- ties and activities here. Vilith high hopes and noble ideals, we came to this hospital, confident that in zealous service to humanity, we could find happiness a11d contentment. Although doubts have often as- sailed us of our capacity to accomplish our tasks, there have also been moments of elation at other tasks well done and courage so gained to continue. Glimpsing' back, we see in nursing duties the opportunities to do with one's own hands-to soothe a fevered brow or to smooth a crumpled pillow with calm sure purpose. The rustling' of a stiffly starched uniform as the nurse hurries down the dimly lighted halls on night duty brings vivid memory of precious moments. VVe remember friendships built on the tirm foun- dations of mutual interests in an absorbing' work. Never-to-be-forgotten incidents of fun-dances and parties, with amiable disagreements over their prep- aration, bedtime chats, so dear to every girlts heart, and coveted trips home-all these linger be- hind as the essence of life off duty. To all those who have given so much of infinite wisdom and boundless patience in our guidance to the understanding' of the true precepts of a worthy nurse, we leave the hope that they shall be well satisfied with our future ,progress toward that goal. To those who follow, we leave the hope that they will find satisfaction and happiness in a profession that offers a haven to the suffering' of a chaotic world.
