Robert Morris, an English born, Philadelphia merchant, whose 200 year old portrait ap- pears opposite this page, was a financial hero of the American Revolution. Robert Morris was the financier of the Ameri- can Revolution and a signer of the Declara- tion of Independence. He was often honored as the most prominent merchant in America. He served the country as Superintendent of Finance from 1781-1784. He labored hard and served well, he guided the organization of a national bank, retrenched expenditures, took steps towards establishing a national mint and extensively used his personal credit to raise funds for our young Republic, fledgl- ing of the nations. ln this, the 200th year of the United States and the 55th year of Robert Morris College, the Patriot staff feels it appropriate to honor America's first financial hero, Robert Morris.
