FII-'TY EIGHT Seniors pose on their sacred lawn We are the biggest la record we will hold lor one year onlyl and best Cthis one will stick for a long, long timell class in the history of Stevenson. Dahl, Parish, Eliassen, and Turner have always placed high on the honor roll, and Turner qualified for the National Merit Scholarship Program. All of the seniors have done well enough in their academic work to gain admission to the college of their choice. Most of the seniors have partcipafed actively in school affairs-the yearbook, Tusitala, student government, committees, and special events. The athletes will be sorely missed next year. Farish, Dahl, and Westheimer have carried the school golf team through successful seasons, Iurgensen has starred in all sports, playing iii on the 1958 tennis team. Placzek and Price were a big help on the soccer lield. Most of all, we have tried our best to make R.L.S. a better school, and we hope that each succeeding senior class will carry on this tradition. M41 KEITH DAHL BRUCE STODDARD Editor Business Manager CHRISTMAS CARNIVAL and BAZAAR Each year it gets bigger and better, and 1957 was no exception. The Bazaar, which is handled by the Mothers' Club under the direction of Mrs. Simard, featured tables of food, books, handiwork, and Christmas decorations, and was a great success. The Gayway organized entirely by the stu- dents was colorful and crowded with excitement. More than S1500 was realized from this happy event, and it was given to the School for the Building Fund. fri? CHRISTMAS PROGRAM Complete with Santa Claus tD.G.l and Polar Bear lW.V.G.M.l, the Christmas Program and the events leading up to the long holiday, were most enjoyable. The Christmas Tree Committee selected a fine tree on the rear campus and it was cut and brought into Douglas Hall with appropriate ceremony. This was decorated with ornaments, handmade by the students, which are saved from year to year. The program featured selections by the Glee Club, directed by Mr. Griffin, readings, and skits. A miv+wmmg.,3 Lmtlael Phil Bartlett had an idea which was gobbled up immediately by a group of the most ardent ski enthu- siasts at R.L.S. , and the Snow Gnomes became an institution, if not quite a tradition as yet, on the campus. The Rocket Club poses belore one of the launchings Science Fair at Spanish Bay SCIENCE CLUB As always, there has been much enthusiasm in the various fields of science this year. Nearly every boy in school was at one time or another busily engaged in beating Van- guard . A number of boys worked on projects for the Science Fair, and Ernie Simard and Al Herrmann were invited to show their display at the regional exhibit in San Francisco. PHOTOGRAPHY Much new equipment was procured for the dark room, and some fine results were ob- tained by ardent photographers Bob Malm, Bob Ricklefs, Iohnny Perine, Bob Price, and Pete Fletcher. Most of the pictures in the SPYGLASS were taken by Malm and his fellow members of the Photo group. Mr. Maddux acted as faculty advisor. Frederic Hobbs, gifted young artist on the R.L.S. Faculty. The time given to art has been divided between a study of the History of Art and design techniques. Much promise has been shown by the budding Rembrandts. MUSIC Music at R.L.S. this year has been pretty much diminuendo . Interest in instru- mental music has been at low ebb, but there has been some real enthusiasm for a chorus, and a great many boys responded to the excellent direction of Mr. Iimmy Griffin, radio and T.V. celebrity, who prepared the vocal music for the Christmas program and the Commencement Exercises. The talented Dahls, Arthur and Mr. Griitin leads the Glee Club at the 1957 Christmas Program Greg, perform at the program I V Hlf' 1' W'--' The 1958 Yosemite Ski Group poses for a picture at Badger Pass YOSEMITE SKI TRIP As always the Yosemite Ski Trip was super, colossal. Fifty boys earned the privilege of this special outing fat least an 80 average in scholarship and a satisfactory citizenship recordl and they were accompanied by nine teachers and parents. Mr. Matthews missed the trip this year for the first time because of a broken leg from a ski mishap earlier in the season. Every kind of weather was encountered this year, with lots of fresh snow, but the slopes were generally good. Everyone took advantage of the professional ski instruction and much progress was made during the week. The dinner dances at the Ahwanee were thoroughly enjoyed, and there was a good bit of other activity in the evenings, although the ice rink was closed because of the warm weather. The only injury was an ankle separation suffered by Randy Miles on Thursday. GOLF Although the record for the season does not equal the achievement of the undefeated 1957 team, the mid-season score of nine victories against three defeats is noteworthy. Three of the losses were decided by one final putt. and only the powerful Watsonville team gained a clear-cut victory. More than forty boys took golf instruction during the year, and some fine young players are on the way up. They will be needed next year, too, to replace the senior stars --Bill Farish, Ierry Westheimer, and Keith Dahl. BILL PARISH IERRY WESTHEIMER THE TEAM The 1958 team was a great com- petitive group but was not too deep in real strength. Bill Farish, Ierry Westheimer, and Keith Dahl-all 1'R.L.S. veterans-can match strokes with the best golfers in the country, but the others are still on the Way up and need more competition and time. Bill Chandler played the 114 position until he hurt his knee fin baseballl, and Iim Black and Iohnny Perine fought it out all season for the 35 spot. Bob Saindon has made wonder- ful progress during his first year at the game, and Eliot Merk does better each week. Others who will get var- sity competition next year include Al Everett, Iirn Carter, Al Herrmann, Wes Cook, Frank Backus, and Garth Eliassen. This year was no exception, although the early season results were a bit on the heartbreak- ing side. Only one first string player will be lost through graduation, and many of the young comets will help build championship teams in the years ahead. It is encouraging that most ot the matches lost during the first part of the schedule went to three sets. We ti to THE TEAM Hal Iurgensen held down the irfl spot most of the season and won more than his share with his hard hitting. Bob Ricklefs, who won the County Championship for Iuniors this year, played 32 and always gave a good account of himself. Dave Harvey, Bo Day. and West Fletcher completed the first singles team and gained strength with each match. Ken McGilvray, Chris Briggs, and Bud Ewer lwho was sidelined most ot the season with other commitments, and who helped coach the young players with great successl saw a lot ot action and gave much promise. Instruction is given by Riding Master Dick Collins at the Pebble Beach Stables and many of the boys have done well in the horse shows. Outstanding has been Ernie Simard who is a candidate for the U.S. Olympic Team and who participated in the National Equestrial Trials at Colorado Springs. ARCHERY Although not a Block S sport at Stevenson, archery is very popular. Boys compete for awards under the auspices of Camp Archery Association in a series of thirteen differ- ent ranks. Terry Stihler has made the most improvement during the year and is ranked as an American Archer.
