'lflln fel . . .The countless snowflakes falling . . . Winter of 1952 came - winter with its cold sunny days, when we laughed and slid, and skated on the icy ponds, the cold rainy days when we huddled in doorways out of the gray drizzle. Then the snow fell - first the sticky wet flakes that clung, and melted, next the finely powdered crystals that cov- ered and hid, deepening to drifts. Out came the sun again, reflecting in blinding glare from the white landscape, sinking toward evening to flash redly between frosted skeleton trees and rooftops. School buses heaved and panted on the slioperv hills, and stopped to pour forth muffled and mit- tened students in front of the old brick buildina, into which they hurried to escape a bitter wind. The bitter wind arew warmer: the snowflakes melted: spring was on its way. mlm
