Rob frt ?«s iir l Dr. York discusses activities with school photographer, Warren Yaeger. Robert Frost Intermediate School opened its doors in the fall of 1964. In 1966 an addition to the building facilities was made with the construction of the left wing and a gymnasium. Dr. York has been principal of Frost for nine years, since the school opened. Over the years, enrollment has fluctuated greatly, although this year we have been fortunate in having fewer students than our 1200 capacity. The fol¬ lowing pages reveal our academic pro¬ grams, our teachers, our students, and our extra-curricula activities for the 1973- 1974 school year. We are proud of our accomplishments. Mrs. Naomi Selvey, Librarian Mrs. Karen Harris Assistant Librarian Mrs. Havens Library Secretary Miss Mary Ellen Finnegan Special Resource Teacher Mrs. Margo Seek Reading Specialist Special Services Mrs. Monday Financial Secretary Mrs. Bettye Smith Principal ' s Secretary Mrs. Shirley Weakley Guidance Secretary Mrs. Wine Receptionist CAFETERIA STAFF Mrs. Flynn, School Nurse Officer Bennett Good-bye, Mr. Phipps, and “Thank You!” Mr. Phipps has been building supervisor at Frost since the school opened in September 1964. He has sold his home here and is returning to southwestern Virginia, where he grew up near Clintwood, Va. Before coming to Frost, he was building supervisor at Lanier Intermediate. His hob¬ bies are hunting and fishing which he hopes to pursue again when he returns to southern Virginia. On December 5 the faculty and staff held a reception in his honor. He was presented with a plaque containing pictures and sig¬ natures of the faculty. His going away gift was a chain saw to help in clearing his new property. 5 Mr. Joseph Clark Mrs. Ruby Henry Miss Veronica Ray Mr. Carroll Conner Miss Phyllis Kessinger Mrs. Mavis Switzer Mrs. Karen Hamilton Mrs. Ruth Orman Mr. John Watkins The English department made more of an emphasis on grammar this year. Some teachers mixed in topic and thematic units with grammar studies. In the seventh grade, some of the units were on short stories, the family, and role playing. The eighth grade teachers did a lot on oral speech. This year we tried to prepare stu¬ dents for their coming years in Math¬ ematics. Some basic ideas which were addition, subtraction, multipli¬ cation and division of whole num¬ bers, fractions, decimals, and inte¬ gers. Both seventh and eighth grade teachers worked on these areas. We in the Math department hope that each student had a successful year. Mr. Herb Carpenter Col. Herman Dammer Miss Barbara Huffman Mrs. Marlene Griffenhagen Mr. James DeGraff Mrs. Janet Morgan Miss Deborah Thompson Mathematics Biology and Introductory Physical Science Mr. Emmitt Hutcheson Mr. John LaCava Mrs. Marjorie Steele Mrs. Beth Wright This year in science we wrote re¬ ports for the science fair and worked on models to enter. In seventh grade we studied biology. We worked with insects also. In eighth grade we stud¬ ied chemistry and their properties. We wrote reports for each experi¬ ment. We feel this was a progressful year in the line of science and in the science fair. Mrs. Betty VanMatre Mr. James Walker 8 History and Social Studies In Social Studies this year we in the eighth grade worked with family concepts, economy, and sociology. We did mainly research and group work this year. Slavery, World Wars and Civil Wars were popping up amongst the seventh graders in his¬ tory. The showcases upstairs were fuli of their progress in history. Re¬ ports, projects, and models deco¬ rated the shelf. Mrs. Barbara Davis Mr. Edward Davis Mrs. Charlotte Duncan Mrs. Janet Frick Miss Mary Perez Mr. John Watson 9 Mrs. Diane Farfan Miss Louise Foster French and Spanish classes studied the cultures of the countrF in which the languages are spoken, in order to gain a better under¬ standing of the language. They learned about French and Spanish cooking and sang songs in the foreign tongue. Twisters and slang words were part of the year ' s fun. Mrs. Penny Needham Mrs. Mary Schwidde Foreign Language This year in guidance we triedto improve the communication be¬ tween teachers and students, and between parents and teachers. We gave the students information on careers. We also helped with ac¬ ademic, personal, and social prob¬ lems. Most of all, in years to come we would like students to come to us to settle any problems that may arise during the year. Mrs. Penny Needham Miss Sally Nelson Guidance 11 The Industrial Arts program at Frost had a lot of things to do. Metal crafts are high on their list. Wrought iron, welding, copper crafts and electroplating (bronzing) took up a lot of time. Plastics, Mechanical drawing and foundry will round out this year ' s activities. In Home Ec¬ onomics, the students at Frost learned basic sewing and cooking skills. Their studies on grooming and child care should make them good home¬ makers! Mr. Jerry Archer Mrs. Nancy Evans Mr. Gerald Gribble Mrs. Cora Lamond Practical Arts Mrs. Linda Burke Mrs. Dorothy Byers Mr. Zardis Hoffman Fine Arts Chorus and band students had a most successful year. By the end of the school year, band and orchestra members were playing difficult music. In art classes, students experimented with a variety of media. Eighth grade students who elected to take art enjoyed working with clay, sketching, erecting mobiles, doing head studies, making jewelry, and in cooperation with the English department, lettering original fall poetry. as it is more commonly known, the S.C.A., has been spon¬ sor ed this year by Mr. Watson. The S.C.A. involves students, teachers, and parents. It gives students a chance to organize themselves and practice citizen¬ ship. The success of the S.C.A. depends on the co¬ operation and participation of all its members. The S.C.A. has been in charge of such programs as the P. B.X., the socials, the Early Bird Breakfast, and the Frost Follies. They have also been working on ways to help the energy crisis. S.C.A. Academic Teams Compete In Math And English The math, which is sponsored by Mr. Allison this year, has been practicing problems to prepare for their two meets. The first meet will take place in Feb¬ ruary inside this school. The second meet, in April, will be county-wide. In these meets, members of each ten man team are given six problems and are timed. 52 F.I. D.A.C., which stands for Frost Intermediate Diversified Activities Club, is a service club which tries in any way possible to improve Rob¬ ert Frost Intermediate. Last fall they planted bulbs in the courtyard. For spring they planned a hobby show, a pet show, and an art show. The sponsor of F.I. D.A.C. is Miss Nelson, Frost ' s gui¬ dance director. As one of the club ' s diversified activities, members helped the Memory Book Staff identify and alphabetize pictures for the class section of the Memory Book. F.I.D.A.C. Members of the F.I. D.A.C. Planning Committee include: Felecia Shenkel, Debbie Drury, Sue Lang Lay, and Vir¬ ginia Huff. 53 Language Clubs SPANISH CLUB FIESTA: Pinata Party The French Club has really had a lot of fun this year. Meeting with Mrs. Farfan about once a month, they have done such things as making crepe suzettes, and the traditional yule log cake called Buche De Noel. They also listened to guests from Air France and ate at a French restaurant. The Spanish club ' s big happening this year was their Christmas party with all the trimmings, including Pinatas. FRENCH CLUB: More Cooking 54 Sanding Down MARK SMITH: C0 2 CAR WINNER Working Hard In reality, the Industrial Arts Club is actually not a club at all, but rather an open lab time held after school classes when students can work on projects of their own choice. The sponsors are Mr. Archer, who supervises eighth grade students, and Mr. Scango, who super¬ vises seventh grade students. Any students who were interested in industrial arts activities were invited to attend this year. Chippin ' Fast 55 Publications Genuises at Work Alphabetizing, stamping, re-alphabetizing, mark¬ ing, suffling. . .just a sample of what the Publica¬ tion Staff did to assemble this year ' s Memory Book. They made mistakes, corrected mistakes, made more mistakes, and corrected those. There was a little blood, a lot of sweat, and a sprinkling of tears. Members have turned in many crea¬ tive works of their own choice. Art Club 57 Drama Club The drama club has met with Mrs. Frick to go through various improvisational exercises. Because the turnout for this club was so great it was divided into two groups, the seventh and the eighth grade. The drama club has also put on two plays. The first play was a Christmas play entitled, Be Deckin ' the Halls, and the second play was put on in the spring and was entitled, The Mouse That Roared. Many hours of hard work went into each production. 58 c h o r u s Mrs. Burke this year is sponsoring a seventh grade chorus, which gave two concerts. The first concert was around Christmas and the second took place in the springtime. Mrs. Burke hopes that within a few years, chorus will be¬ come a part of the seventh grade curriculum, as it is in the eighth grade. The officers are: president, Mary Ru¬ bin, vice-president, Carolynn Hammound and secretary, Lonnie Marrilla. c h o r u s S9 The main activity of Robert Frost ' s Chess Club this year was a student vs. student tournament. The winner and runner-up receive trophies at the end of the school year. Practice and competition for the tournament took most of the year. The Chess Club President was Mike Deliman. Sponsored by Mrs. Morgan, members of the club enjoyed their ardent compe¬ tition and learned methods of advanced play. 60 The Bible Study group is headed this year by Mr. Clark. They are studying the New Testament in an informal discussion manner. They are also singing contemporary Christ¬ ian songs. Top: Al Abel, Frank Lyle, Tony Fredericks, Tim Billups, and Mr. Clark.
