OBERT Fairfax, Virginia 1972-1973 Dr. Henry E. York Principal The enrollment at Frost this year is 1668, not counting the 74 teachers, 2 librarians, 5 coun¬ selors, 3 principals, nurse, 8 custodians, 13 cafe¬ teria workers, and seven secretaries. This is the ninth year Frost has been in operation. Academic programs at Frost are described on the following pages. Extra curricular activities include intra¬ murals, French and Spanish clubs, art club, Bible study, drama, publications, creative writ¬ ing, and S.C.A. At this time Frost is the largest intermediate school in the county, and has ex¬ cellent safety patrols helping students who ride 43 regular and 6 late buses. Frost also has student proj ects such as the P. B. X. and F. I. D. A. C. With over 12, 000 books in the library, there is plenty for students to read. Administration ... Eighth graders looked at se¬ mantics, the power of words, propaganda, and advertising as used in society. They also studied fables, myths, fairy tales, legends and parables as man ' s means of expressing ideas of good, evil, and beauty. The study of representative authors showed eighth graders how history was shaped by writers as well as how history affected writer ' s works. English Stresses Basic Language Arts Poluto, Aphrodity, and Zeus. . . Mr. John Watkins s 5th period English through Thematic Units Mr. James Bradley Those negative numbers were baffling for awhile, but finally I got it. I still think NxN should be P,butthose math teachers said NO . Exponents were small numbers; they should have been easy. I get tired just thinking about divid¬ ing decimals, and oh, those fractions and percents. I wish I had studied more. Dammer Perfect in Math Mrs. Grace Garrett Mrs. Janet Morgan Mrs. Lois Evans Dr. Christine Chadwick Mrs. Barbara Davis Seventh grade history classes played academic games this year in their study of American history. Students also participated in research units and his¬ torical plays, contracting for various projects. They also studied music from the various time periods. Group work, historical debates, and panel discussions rounded out the year for seventh grade history students. Mr. Edward Davis Mrs. Charlotte Duncan Miss Mary Perez Mrs. Kathleen Bonnie Eighth Grade Social Studies This year in our eighth grade social studies classes we have learned about primitive tribes in Africa and have compared them to our society today. Next we studied citizenship. We found out what rights we have and also what responsibilities we have. We also studied about money and business which helped us understand many problems in the world today. Not only did we learn about the past and present, but we studied the future and what the world will be like many years from now. We played games, like Monopoly and the Jungle, in which we were million¬ aires and Congressmen. We saw many films and discussed things of in¬ terest to us this year. Mr. Jeffrey Simpson Mr. JohnM. Watson Boasts of New Program of Study In one semester of science, seventh graders studied life science, including structure and function of systems of the human body as compared to those of the frog. The climax was dissecting a frog. I. P. S. eighth grade students learned more about matter. By studying the density, boiling point, radioactivity and various other properties, students learned about atoms and molecules and the ways these particles behave. They started with recorders and guitar. Music teachers invited many performers to dance and present native music to clas¬ ses. The object of this was to give the students a wide variety of music. In art students dabbled in skills too numerous to mention. A few included clay modeling, pottery, needlecraft, mosaics, blockprinting, silk screening, painting, drawing, string art, and paper mache work. Mrs. Karen Mackey Mrs. Shirley Strang Mrs. Nancy Evans Mrs. Cora Lamond Mrs. Beth Wright Practical Arts Prepare Students Homemaking at Frost places great emphasis on the individ¬ ual girl and her capacity to develop into knowledgeable and well-adjusted future homemakers. Specific objectives in¬ clude giving girls appreciation for attractiveness, improving responsibility with children, developing basic requirments in cooking, and enhancing household management techniques. 14 for the “Every Day Things” in Life Mr. Jerry Archer Mr. Fred Scango Seventh grade I. A. stu¬ dents built CO 2 cars, built models of inventions, and engaged in individual pro¬ jects of wood and plastic. In eighth grade boys and girls began with mechanical drawing and learned to use the tools of a draftsman. Metal working was included in the program. Some stu¬ dents built models of houses to learn about house con¬ struction, and finished the year by working on small gasoline engines. 15 Mr. John Bell Mrs. Leonora Birnbairm Mrs. Renee Agresta Mrs. Penny Needham Guidance Helps Students Understand Themselves The Guidance Department performs many duties. The primary one is to place each student in the classes in which he individually can best achieve to his fullest potential. Other duties of the counselors are: help students solve their personal problems and work with teachers and parents to help stu¬ dents. Record keeping and testing are part of their functions, as well as pre-registration for high school. I could use some of your services! 16 The A.M.L. approach in French and Spanish classes is to stress understanding and speaking of the language, and secondly reading and writing. The student learns the languages much as a child learns his native language. By the end of the year, the student should be capable of functioning in a Spanish speaking, or French speaking country with a minimum of difficulty. Students are acquainted with Spanish and French speaking countries by speakers, films, newspapers and magazines. First and Second Place winners in Cross Country. n yi Bf i ' Memory Book Staff Publications Provide Record of School Activities Both the Newspaper and Mem¬ ory Book staffs worked diligently this year preparing publications for the students at Frost. With so many students, faculty members, and activities to cover in print and pictures, the two clubs found that this type of activity is more work than play. Newspaper Staff FRENCH CLUB MEMBERS SPANISH CLUB MEMBERS Foreign Language Clubs Outgrowth of Class Activities Members of the French Club have a great deal of fun learning about the culture and people of France. This year they listened to guest French speakers, had a rollerskating party, and went to a French restuarant and ordered in French. The Spanish club met on the third Tuesday of each month and learned about cultural aspects of Spanish speak¬ ing countries. Activities included films, speakers, singing, dancing, and fiestas. This year the French and Spanish Clubs combined their groups for a Christmas Party. Mrs. Humphreys, mother of a Frost student, prepares Fondue at a French Club meeting. 69 F.I.D.A.C. 70 Creative Writing Club Mr. Watkins has been sponsoring a Creative Writing club that met every Tuesday .At the beginning of the year, students wrote their thoughts and feelings on paper without concern for spelling, punctuation, sen¬ tence structure or poetic form. Afterwards, the sponsor tried to help students mold the thoughts into publishable material. At the start of some meetings, a film was shown for inspirational purposes. At other meetings, poetry was read, also intended to inspire students. Many students wrote children ' s stories, and six of these were mailed to pub¬ lishers. Not only writing was studied. Cartoon creations and cross¬ word puzzles were among the various activities. The goal of the club was for students to gain self confidence in themselves and their ability to express ideas.
