COMDESRO THIRTY FIVE ROBERT K U KIHUN Born in Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii, Robert K.U. Kihune is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. Receiving his commission in june of 1959 he began his service in destroyers aboard the U.S.S. PRICHETT KDD-5613 in july of that year. In October of 1961 he was ordered to the commissioning crew of USS ROBISON IDDG-12j as the prospective Communications Officer. Upon commissioning he served as Communications Officer and later as CIC Officer. His next assignment was to the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Cali- fornia, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications Engineering in june of 1965. From july of 1965 until March of 1967 he served as the Operations Officer of U.S.S. FARRAGUT CDLG-6j, then being ordered to U.S.S. DAVIDSON CDE-10455 as her Executive Officer. In january 1969 he was ordered to the Officer Distribution Division, Bureau of Naval Personnel where he was Head of the Communications Activities Placement Section. Orders for a tour as Commanding Officer of U.S.S. COCHRANE CDDG-21j were received in December of 1971 followed by orders to the staff of Commander, Third Fleet, in july of 1973. Between july 1977 and june 1978 he was a student at the Naval War College at Newport, R.I. Upon the completion of that course he was assigned to the Command and Control Director- ate IOP-094j of the Office of the Chief of Naval Oper- ations. Captain Kihune's decorations include the Legion of Merit with Combat v, Navy Commendation Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with three stars, Meritorious Unit Cita- tion Ribbon, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Re- public of Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, and the Republic of Vietnam Navy Distinguished Service Order, Second Class. Captain Kihune is married to the former Hope Zablan of Kaneohe, Oahu, Hawaii.
