HIP' HISTORY The U.S.S. ROBERT E. PEARY lFF-10737 is the third ship in the history of the United States to be named in honor of Rear Admiral Robert Edwin Peary, Civil Engi- neer Corps, U.S. Navy, Arctic explorer. She is the twenty-second ship-of-the-line in the Knox frigate class, specially designed to locate and destroy subma- rines. During her assignment to the Cruiser-Destroyer force and Naval Surface Force of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, ROB- ERT E. PEARY has completed one South Pacific, one Indiana Ocean, and three Western Pacific deploy- ments since commissioning in 1972. Originally based in Long Beach, California, ROBERT E. PEARY was reassigned to her present homeport in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in August 1973. Since her assign- ment to Pearl Harbor, she has participated in several major fleet exercises in addition to the many type training exercises conducted locally that keep her ready for combat. ln April, 1977, ROBERT E. PEARY underwent her first regular overhaul which included a major refurbishing of the ship's hull, superstructure, and internal spaces. A complete reworking and repair of the main engi- neering plant and auxiliary machinery. ROBERT E. PEARY operates as a unit of Destroyer Squadron Thirty-five. ft ss.. X sw 4. . s S 'Sgt N?
