K 'D . f. 2540.411 'Q it f - x The small port city of Fremantle in Western Australia is the opening on the sea for Perth, the City of Light. Whether it was hiking, bik- ing, or trail riding the liberty here proved to be outstanding. Some of the best shopping bar- gains found anywhere on sheepskin products and toy Koala bears also attracted many willing customers. Being with a full carrier battle group had both advantages and disadvantages. De- spite the large number of sailors, or because of it, people from miles around showed up to take a Yank sailor out on the town or into their homes for a good, home cooked meal. Pack- aged tours also proved to be very popular. As our last liberty port before we started the Indi- an Ocean part of our deployment there was an atmosphere of last fling prevailing. Several events were staged for the Yanks including two large dances with plenty of dance partners available. Fremantle and Perth proved to us that they really know how to welcome American sailors: just as we had been told! l

A good time was had by all. lBelowl Our Australian hosts invited us into their homes and hearts everywhere we went. A non- stop round of visits and plaque exchanges occurred in every port: often accompanied by a party. With a starting time of zero-dark thirty llocall the turnout was surprisingly large. Although no records, other than personal ones, were set and the exact distance is not known, the race was a very good test of endurance for all concerned.
