PEARY Robert Edwin Peary was born on May 6, 1856 in Cres- son, Pennsylvania Upon his father's death in 1859, Peary and his mother moved to Maine where, in 1873, he graduated from Portland high school. In 1877 he graduated from Bowdoin College with a Civil Engi- neering degree On October 26, 1881 he was commis- sioned a Lieutenant in the Corps of Civil Engineers of the United States Navy With six months leave in 1886, Peary set out to ex- plore part of Greenland Along with a young Danish official, Peary made a reconnaissance of about 100 miles from the foot of the ice cap, reaching an eleva- tion of about 7500 feet before being forced to return by a storm Peary had made the decision to make Arctic research his lifes work In 1891 he was granted 18 months leave His obiective was to reach the northern termi- nus of Greenland by way of the inland ice. Leaving on june 6 1891 and returning to New York in 1892, Peary, along with his wife and six men, had reached the northern most point of the ice cap, established the insularity of Greenland, explored vast unknown territory, made meterological and tidal observations, With this he far exceeded his original goals. Further Arctic explorations were undertaken in 1893-95, 1898 1902, and 1905 1905 In july of 1908 Peary again headed north in his explo- ration ship, Roosevelt, setting a record for the north- ern most point reached by a ship under it's own steam On March 1 1909 Peary and Matt Henson started the final dash for the Pole with four Eskimos and forty dogs On April 6 1909 after stopping from sheer exhaus- tion for a few hours rest, Peary achieved his ultimate goal the North Pole Peary was promoted of the rank of Captain on Octo- ber 20 1910 Congress passed a bill thanking him for his work on March 3 1911 Peary retired with the rank of Rear Admiral On February 20, 1920, at the age of sixty four, Robert E Peary died in Washington, D.C. . . , , . and made an ethnoiogical study of an Eskimo tribe.
