Homecoming . . . Student Council . . . Rebel Staff . . . Senior Play . . . tests . . . graduation. Each of these events, and many more as well, is familiar to Lee students. This year we have used columns to introduce the sections of our annualg the columns pictured lead us into the build- ings where our school, home, church, and civic life is molded. From the faculty and class sections through the advertising section, we have attempted to portray the aspects of life at Lee. We trust that this annual is so designed that years from now when we look through this 1959 Rebel, we may recall vividly our years spent at Lee. Our purpose in compiling this Rebel has been to give a pictorial and verbal account of our high school days. The 1959 Rebel Staff sincerely hopes that this purpose has been accomplished. Lee Institute Dedication When we first came to Robert E. Lee High School, we met a group of people known as the faculty and administration. Little did we know what a major part these people were going to play in our lives. They not only taught us math, English, and typing, but also fun, laughter, and understand- ing. They taught us to understand ourselves, as well as others. Members of the faculty served as counselors, sponsors, advisors, and directors. They chap- eroned our dances and initiated new clubs and activities. They supported us physically as well as morally. We will never forget these people who gave so unsparingly of their time. We no longer consider them just as our teachers, but also our life-long friends. ,Y Q H M , I U i w: I 1 N Q 9 if: Q :. The committee considered the purpose of acceleration, the thinking of well-known educators on the subject, experimental programs in other schools, and recommendations from departments and individuals within our school. Out of these studies came the classes in cer- tain required academic subjects for students who showed above-average ability in those areas. As a result, special classes were begun this year in algebra, general science, geometry, biology, and sophomore English. Under the chairmanship of the guidance director, the registration committee, which grew out of recommendations by the committee on acceleration, is composed of teachers representing all departments in the school. They check the students' registration forms for accuracy and completeness, make any necessary changes, and make out each student's schedule for the next term. lb cooks prepare or students. Roosevelt Traylor, Albert Traylor, Benny Traylor, Tyrus Traylor, Marvin Cunningham The rewards of difficult work, the recognition of our fellow students, the Commendation of faculty members, and a respect for ourselves as we see what we have accomplished are just a few of the memorable events of our high school life. These events have made each member of the student body of R. E. Lee swell with pride. The frefbmafz who has entered a new life of assigmnents, book reports, and tests, the sopho- more who can now tease a freshman but is still teased by the juniors and seniorsg the junior who is just learning to burn the midnight oil in order to complete his parallel reading or to finish read- ing a book for a testg the Jenior who has finally reached the peak of a twelve-year climb-each is proud to be a member of the Lee student body. - - - va ' VN .V .f ff-f.vff -11' ' ' . Who has helped us so Someday we must go. Far, to our greatest dreams Even though it seemed, We'd never, Ever make it through, We owe it all to you. R. E. Lee so true. just to be here at R. E. Lee Is a privilege so rare. Though we now take our final bow You know we'l1 always care. Now, worlds to conquer lie just before our eyes But always We will keep in mind We must leave behind The best we'll ever find. By: ,JOHNNY PRICE l Mascots: Ronald Harris and Vicki Lee CLASS POEM Now our days at R. E. Lee Are drawing to a close These four years have seemed so short, But that's the way it goes. To those who helped us reach this goal, Our gratitude we cannot speak. Their patience and their understanding Helped us scale this great peak. All the friends we've known and worked with Now must go their separate ways. But in times to come we'll cherish Memories of these carefree days. Now it's time for us to join All the classes of the past, Hoping that We leave behind Some contribution that will last. By: JOHNNY PRICE Red and White Red Rose We've reached the foothillsg the mountains lie ahead. C olorr: Flower: Molto: Mr. M00re's Message to the Seniors TO THE CLASS OF '59 As I write more farewells, they get harderg and it becomes more difficult to avoid repetitions. Yet I cannot avoid the old commonplaces by saying that I have enjoyed being your principal and have confidence in you as leaders of the future. Some of you cannot avoid future leadership, for you are the future, whatever its shape might be. I hope school has taught you a few fundamentals and some appreciations of your American heritage and your debt to your schools and teachers. I hope you have learned that there is no substitute for diligence and no royal road to learning- that a good education is not easily secured. You face an increasingly competitive world in which survival, personal and national, goes only to those fitted by will and training to survive. I hope you have learned that change is the law of life, yet that it must be tempered with stability. Please remember the things school cannot do. It cannot give you ambition if you lack itg it cannot give you good character if you do not wish itg it cannot take the place of the home and home training. In fact, almost every student is a reflection either OF his home or ON it. No school can guarantee success in life or make you respect others and their rights. Education does not in itself guarantee you will be agood citizen or an honest one. School will aid you greatly in all these things, but cannot carry the whole load. Last-and most important-I hope you value your public school education - the same system that educated your fathers, mothers and grandparents, a system for which no nation or state has ever found a satisfactory substitute. 01 Senior Class Q, 1 Q L '-A , I , A ' N A4 Y Q , Z 1 Y M ? i . 5 5 A M .gj 1 I i i t g l f r w S C'.1, 1595 9 95 A 5 i LL ,LLLQQLLL guugt.
