A friend and helper to the students as well as a highly respected instructor, he has contributed much to this school. The Language Department has two purf poses: to teach the student the use of correct English, both oral and writen, and to instill in him an understanding ot and an appreciation for all forms of literature. These numbers are to help peo- ple think and reason future problems for themselves. The department of mathematics offers a double track program of courses. Al- gebra, plane geometry and trigonometry are the college preparatory courses. She received her A.B. degree at the Uni- versity of Georgia, and her Master's degree in mathe- matics at the same school. SHEHEE 536 tg.. yy The general purpose of the Social Sci- ence Department is to promote an un- derstanding ot and an interest in human beings and their interrelationships. The achievement of this purpose is sought by connecting the community with the school, the past with the present, the government with the school, the citizen with the teacher, and society with educa- tion. The specific courses which make up this department are American history, World history, social living, geography, and prob- lems of democracy. McPEAKE, SCHUMACHER, ROOKS Books and beakers . . . 't Y. c-UW NLP- Work in the Commercial Department is designed to give students a general knowledge of business as well as to prepare them vocationally in the field of their choice. Courses are offered in typewriting, shorthand, bookkeeping, office practice, business English, busi- ness math, and business law. The members of the Commercial De- partment include Mrs. Joe Purcell, B.S., Mr. Clarence Crews, B.B.A., M.B.A., and Mr. Harold Maguire, B.B.A., M.Ed. Mr. Ralph Hogan teaches one typing class and business law. Mrs. Bill Heule teaches business English. PENDLETON, BLAND Mr. Maguire, the students' stand-by, is head of the Commercial Department. Since coming to Lee, he has done much toward the improvement of our school. As evidence of his outstanding work, he has acquired the position of assist- ant principal. From the University of Georgia he received his B.B.A. and M.Ed. degrees. PURCELL, CREWS WX, Our library serves as the laboratory for the school. An adequate supply of material on all subjects is there to give information or answer any questions the students might have. Acting as head librarian is Miss Jane Pendleton. She has obtained her A.B. and B.S. degrees. Miss Pendleton, who has served as librarian in Tennessee, has been at Lee since l947. Miss Gertrude Bland, assistant librar- ian, was an R. E. Lee honor graduate in 1905. She has obtained on-the-job training and has been in charge of cir- culation in our library since l947. rifles, are learning equipment Captain Maier, an outstanding military leader, has served as an instructor and as head of our military unit for one year. He believes, This is one of the finest units in the United States, I have three industrious sergeants serving as my assistants. The accom- odations here at R. E, Lee are the best. The purpose of the Science Depart- ment is to prepare each student for higher courses in scientific research. Courses offered in this department are: Biology, Chemistry, General Science, and Physics. Teachers in this department are: Mr. Joe Thompkins, M.A., Mr. C. B. Cal- houn, M.A., Mr. J. Eugene Rogers, A.B., M.Ed. Besides those listed above, Miss Betty Ware Brown, B.S. and Miss Bettie Rhodes, B.S., teach one class each of General Scienceghand Mr. William Nall, A.B., M.A., teaches one class of Biology, The mission of the ROTC unit is to assist in preparing our young men to accept the burden of citizenship by teaching them a respect for constituted authority, and to teach them certain skills which will be beneficial to each cadet personally and to the nation if he enters the armed forces. The Military Department, in addition to normal activities sponsors a Rifle Team Drill Team and Radio Club. The staff consists of the captain and Sergeants Brese, Brooks, and Hamner. CHENOWETH GAINEY The Home Economics Department, which offers four years of study in the field, is of great importance to all girls. All phases of worlc per- taining to the management of a home are covered from the dating period forward. Class work as well as home proiect work helps to im- prove classroom skill. This depart- ment also sponsors the Future Home- makers of America, a worthwhile organization designed to help girls in their home and community life. The members of this department include Miss Bettie Ware Brown, B.S., and Miss Bettie Rhodes, B.S. ATWOOD DEAN FRANKO Music, a course in fine arts, helps to teach the student good health habits, cor- rect breathing, and improved coordination in addition to the instruction they receive in voice, piano and the use of musical instruments. These organizations act as service clubs to the school and community. Miss Ann Gainey, the instructor in piano, has received her B.M. and M.M. degrees. Mr. Robert Chenoweth, our new band and chorus director, has received his A.B. and M.A. degrees. RHODES B ROWN The main obiective of the Physical Edu- cation Department is to creat and maintain an understanding of physical activities for the individual student. We feel that a well defined sense of sportsmanship and fair play will develop from participation in this program. The instruction given in Health Education along with the teaching of sports helps to better prepare the student in the field of physical education. Miss Edna Atwood, A.B., Miss Pat Dean, A.B., and Mr. James Franko, A.B., M.A., constitute the staff of this department. lndustrial arts is offered as a high school course to teach boys the skill of using hand power tools. New machin- ery has been purchased by the Board of Education to better improve the proi- ects constructed by the students. Our D.C.T. program, through the cooperative arrangement among school, business and student provides actual work experience on a part-time basis which enables a student to obtain ex- perience in a selected occupation. Class room work and on-the-iob training are co-ordinated to better prepare students for future employment. Teachers in these departments are Mr. Allen Stiles and Mr. Walter Messer, B.S. Most of the students agree that this year's lunches have been better than ever before. Mrs. Morgan, and her staff, has done an excellent iob of planning and preparing the lunches for the students. Mr. Morgan is the mainten- ance director. Besides seeing that our buildings and campus are kept clean and attractive, Mr. Morgan does any odd iobs that he can for either students or faculty. ACTIVITIES Democrats and Republicans applaud as lke Willoughby and Mamie Schuessler make their appearance at the rally. Acllai Ross receives moral and physical support from Cleveland Butler, National Democratic Chairman. Lynnard Bolton looks slightly unnerved to be such an outstanding political leader. Cleveland Butler introduces political celebrities to the audience at the mock political rally at Lee. Lee Student Council is composed of three elected officers two faculty sponsors, and fourty-eight elected student members. This group meets every two weeks for their regular period meeting. This year, the Council will be host to the Georgia Association of Student Council annual conference to be held at Rock Eagle Camp, March 7, 8, 9, 1957. Several proiects have been carried on by the council. Some were: Annual Open House, Citizenship Drive, Safety- Driving, and the Welfare Drive at Christmas. The council guided the other organiza- tions on our campus in the Help for Upson County Retarded Students. Under the capable leadership of Patricia Carter, the R. E.
