Mrs. Haule, Mrs. Chatfield, and Mr. Warren. This department functions for two purposes: that of teaching a student to have command of his own language and that of instilling in him an understanding of and an apprecia- tion for all forms of literature. For the latter he is encouraged to read. both in class and out of class, to discuss. and apply these experiences to his every day life. The Language Department has the cooperation of other departments in re- quiring students to use the best English possible. This department offers four years of English. two years of Latin and Span- ish. Business English, and Journalism. The Social Science Department includes Mrs. Schumacher, Mr. Roolcs. Mr. Hogan. Mr. Nlcpeake. Miss Shehee. and Coach Cavan. The main purposes of this de- partment are to assist the student to understand himself and his physical and social world, and to encourage him to think. feel. and act wisely in assuming his place in today's world. Also. they en- deavor to stress the importance of respect for the dignity of every human being as a human being. They share with all other teachers the responsibility for pupil guid- ance. training in reading. oral and written expression. and school and community citizenship. The social studies program in- cludes geography. world history. social living. American history. and world prolilems. sushi ' Hr. Calhoun. Nlr. Tompkins. Mr. Rogers. and Nlr. Nall are instructors in the Fcicncc Department. This department offers chemistry. physics. lviology. and general science. To prcparc students for col- lege and the scientific world in which wc live is the main purpose of this department. Maxi Nlrs. Thomason. Mr. Hunter. Nlr. Oxner. and Klr. Baskin are instructors in the Mathematical Department. which offers courses in alge- bra. plane and solid geome- try. trigonometrv. and gen- eral Math. 'l-hev endeavor to prepare students for college. and to enable those who are not going to college to live a fuller. more useful life. l 4 , Captain Robert J. Maier, Sgt. Brese. and Sgt. Jones are in- structors in the Military Depart- ment. The purpose of this depart- ment is to prepare the boys for service and to enable them to take and obey commands. In the past and present the department has received superior ratings from the annual inspection. Also. the department sponsored a polio drive and collected 31049.92 this year. Miss Bettie Rhodes and Miss Betty Ware Brown are instructors in the Home Economics Depart- ment. Four years of homemaking are offered, and each of these courses is elective. Homemaking is divided into units. including cloth- ing. foods. child care. develop- ment and guidance. home nursing. and personal relationships. The Future Homemakers of America is the national organization of pupils studying homemaking in junior and senior high sehoolg this brings together groups interested in work- ing toward better home and family living. 1'wS55'iX 9Y f V , 3 2 iff? f 1 , , . ?' The Tex- tile Departmf-nt offers courses in mechanical and yarn calculation. cotton yarn manufacture and processes. The purpose is to give the student a better over-all knowledge of cotton yarn manufac- ture before entering the textile industry. The Diver- sified Cooperative Training Program 1D.C.T.b is a supervised occupational training vvork-study-pro- gram to develop basic occupational duties for sub- sequent employment in business and industry. The Industrial Arts Department trains students in Woodcraft. The students make several projects during the school year for their own personal use. Miss Pendleton and Miss Bland are our librarians. It is a long accepted fact that the library is the barometer of the school system, and in this case, the town and county as well, because ours is also a public library. We seat ap- proximately seventy persons. and much of the time the library is filled to capacity. The department of Audio-Visual Materials is growing rapidly. Mrs. Morgan. Dietitian, and Mrs. Shepherd make up the lunch- room staff. Each day they furnish the students with a well-balanced meal. There are approximately five hundred and fifty students who avail themselves of the opportun- ity of eating a hot meal. Mr. Morgan, Maintenance En- gineer. sees that the school is kept in the best possible condition. both the campus and buildings. cmd ' Sid!! JANITORIAI. STAFF-Henry junior. Benny Truylnr. IS receiving an unhealthv sense of values at a tender age This IS mdeed terrible training for the world of reality he will llve in Over two thousand years ago there liyed in Rome the family of the Cracchl Times were prosperous and yet decadent as often happens The mother of the GTaCChl brothers Tlberlus and Galus had friends visiting her The WISIIOFS were ostentatlously d1splaymg their jewels When the guests asked the mother to show her jewels she called to her Slde her two sons These are my Jewels she said Years later these sons first Tiberius and then Galus lost their Ines fighting for the rights of the Roman people against their oppressors To the Class of 06 it might he pertinent to ask What are your yewelso KENNETH J 'VIOORL . 7 . . . . 1 .n 1 - u i ' ' l 7 . . Lee. but what can we do, Our classmates and teachers all bid us adieul Our leaving will bring sadness to our classmates l fear. The rooms that we leave you will bring us a tear. The hall where we wandered will be left behind. Our lockers to the juniors so clean they will find. I seem to recall the fun that we had And not one of our teachers would let us be bad. The fun at the dances we'll never forget. The songs that they played were always the best. Some dances were formal. some dances were not. Sometimes we would slow dance and sometimes weid bop. So soon weill be leaving but just for a while. But we'll meet again with a great big smile. Tomorrow. Tomorrow never will come. For we'll be together in sadness and fun. By LEYICRNE SKIPPER eoahz NIASCOTS: Sherry Ann Sawyer. Al Howell MOTTO: We have passed our taskg but are yet to reach our goal. COLORS: Pink and Wvhite FLOWER: Pink Carnation CLASS POENI Like the rain drips off the window pane, We'll leave each other. but not in vain. More fun than sadness we have had. Wle were good at times. and at times bad. Youill never know what you mean to me. You have been so helpful dear Robert E. Lee. It has always been my belief dear Lee. That no better friend l will ever see. We have roamed in the halls. through the rooms, and around: And many a great friend we have found. We have talked under the arch To the Annex we would go. Where we would meet many with a smiling hello.,, The teachers were so helpful in any way we turned, They gave us a good lecture and much more we would learn. Wfhen the bell rang at noon. The teachers only heard a zoom. They did not try to stop us: lThey knewl we were headed for the lunch room. After lunch the fun began. to 4th. 5th. and 6th period we again ran. Wlhen the 3:30 bell rang those days. We started out on life's dreary ways. So as we stand before you today, You will probably hear everyone say: Our hearts are throbbing with tension and fear, As we reach out to get our diploma with a tearf, By LEYERNE SKIPPER I s H v 1' Q , X an 2 E www if ,-X if -us- f 1 , . E. Lee since 1875 has lieen due largely to the Concentrated efforts of many individuals and groups. Among those individuals who have con- tributed to the advancement of R. E. Lee. none has been 111ore outstanding than Mr. and Mrs. James R. Atwater, Mr. Atwater. affectionately known as Captain graduated in the class of 1890 and has, down through the years. been keenly interested in his Alma Mater. For a number of years he serxed as Chairman of the Board of Education. a position which his father held when the school was first chartered in 1875. After retiring from the Board. Captain Atwater has still maintained his interest in R. E. Lee. having from time to time sponsored and contributed materially to various projects conducted by the school. ln 1950 the present Science Building which hears his name was constructed at a cost of 5580.000 His gift of more than one-half of the cost of this liuilding has given R. lf. Lee the opportuiiity to have an outstanding science program for preparation of our students for the future. Again in 1956. Captain Atwater provided the school with an actixities bus at a cost of 512.000, This bus is used by all departments of the school and has enabled our students to ride safely and comfortably to any part of Georgia in which Lee has had the opportunity to participate in any school activities. 1 1 ill 1 the 4 111r1l111 .it lt 11 111tl ffl 111 1111 tl Ill- :tt it 1111i 111t1 1 f 114 I1 llltl 11111 t 1ll I ll 4 111111 I1 Xli Xu 1 We appreciafe our adverfisers who helped fo make fhis bool: possible.
