CLASS POEM i by Billy Sinrich A heavenly light shown all around As St. Pete knelt there on the ground And as he gazed toward paradise A light of wonder filled his eyesg Now Lawd, You knows jest how I bin, A swearin' all mortals was fulla sing But Lawd, I'se now done seed de light My eyes is beheld a wonderous sight. A bunch 0' folks what's jest so fine, Why Lawd, it made me change my mind. I seed some mortals in dis place That's sho chock full o' Yo own grace. An Lawdfseein' how I'se changed my mind An ideas I had since de 'ginninyof time, I knows Yo jest won't mind a bit If I drinks a little ole toast to it. Then old St. Pete reached way in back And pulled out a bottle of apple-jack And raising a glass to the Heavenly Host I-Ie then repeated this little toast. A toast to good ole R. E. Lee And de kids in de class o' '53 A toast to ,all de fun they'se had A' lotta good times an one or two bad. A 'toast to all their jobs well-done. A toast to them each and every one. And then St. Pete took one long sip And said as he wiped off his upper lip, Lawd, have plenty o' room there in Yo town Cause dis whole great bunch am Heaven bound! And I, as I watched this scene from afar, Couldn't help seeing one bright star Swing from its path in the Heavenly sea, And come to stand over Robert E. Lee.
