Lee is extremely proud of its teams because we have fine play- ers that show good sportsmanship and excellent school spirit. We may have lost a few games, but we have won a fine name for our school through our sportsmanship. The team loses little material by graduation this year and we are looking for a championship team next year. The girls' intramural sports program, sponsored by the Phys- ical Educational Department, in- cludes volleyball, basketball, and tennis. Miss Dean, Coach Weaver, Mrs. Peacock. The English department is further divided into three branch- es of study: general English, business English, and journalism. JOHN WOODALL The English department has as its main purpose the teaching of practical every- day English and writing. This department also tries to broaden the student's mind in the fields of finer literature. Since each student is required to take English four years, this is considered one of the most important departments in high school. Our foreign language department is still in its infancy and, as yet, includes only two languages: Latin and Spanish. The language department sponsors the English Club, Latin Club, and Spanish Club to better acquaint the student with the finer points of these languages. H., 'S aria! fiance Department The Social Science Department sponsors probably more classes than any of the other departments. They are: American History, World History, Journalism, Social Living, Problems of Democracy, and Geography. This department held a student election this year just a few days before the national election. We had our own Stevenson and Eisenhower, and were priviledged to choose between them. fWe chose Stevensonlj The social science department is especially designed for students who have varied interests in social issues, research, and public or social issues. M155 BLANCHE SHEHEE This department provides a broad cultural background for understanding public affairs, for useful citizenship in the American democracy. RHODES PMSQT Military Department Capt. Samual T. Rhodes, Sgt. Walter Slayden, Sgt. A. W. Lamb, Sgt. James Thomas. The math department is one of the most important in our school. Everyone has to have at least one type of math before graduating, and most students try to have three or four. We have a very complete math department offer- ing all stages of college prepara- tory math, including business and general math, beginners and ad- vanced algebra, plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. dh if The R.O.T.C. unit is an integral part of our school program. Our unit has been a credit to Lee by maintaining an honor rating and instilling in our students traits of character, leadership and dis- cipline. Capt. Samual T. Rhodes, the PlVlS8zT, is ably assisted by Sgts. Slayden, Lamb and Thomas. Sgt. Slayden is retiring this year after many contributive years at Lee. The Commercial Department has as its objective the teaching of the fundamental principles of business to those students who plan to enter the business field. Courses are also offered to aid students in other areas of work. Subjects offered by -the commer- cial department are: shorthand, typing, office practice, and book- keeping. The Music Department spon- sors four choral groups, a band, and piano courses. Miss Herri- tage is the director of the Girls' Clee Club, Boys' Clee Club, Choir l and Choir ll. Mr. Matthiessen is the director of our band, and Miss Cainey is the piano teacher. Miss Cainey is also offering, for the first time at Lee, a music appreciation course. This De- partment also sponsors a Sunday afternoon musical program for the public. X X Mr. Harold Maguire, Mrs. Carene Elijah, Mr. Clarence Crews. DEPARTMENT HEADS MR. A bunch 0' folks what's jest so fine, Why Lawd, it made me change my mind. I seed some mortals in dis place That's sho chock full o' Yo own grace. An Lawdfseein' how I'se changed my mind An ideas I had since de 'ginninyof time, I knows Yo jest won't mind a bit If I drinks a little ole toast to it. Then old St. Pete reached way in back And pulled out a bottle of apple-jack And raising a glass to the Heavenly Host I-Ie then repeated this little toast. A toast to good ole R. E. Lee And de kids in de class o' '53 A toast to ,all de fun they'se had A' lotta good times an one or two bad. A 'toast to all their jobs well-done. A toast to them each and every one. And then St. Pete took one long sip And said as he wiped off his upper lip, Lawd, have plenty o' room there in Yo town Cause dis whole great bunch am Heaven bound! And I, as I watched this scene from afar, Couldn't help seeing one bright star Swing from its path in the Heavenly sea, And come to stand over Robert E. Lee. CLASS SONG fTu,ne-You Belong To Mel Now these last school days will soon be gone Days of learning what is right and wrong, But my love for Lee will still be strongg I'll just say, So long. Friends and teachers that I love so dear, Our home team that I would always cheer, How I hate to leave all of you here, Lee, you are so dear. I'll be soalone when awayg Maybe I'll come back someday, I pray. I'll see the halls and rooms of used to be, Find the desk that once belonged to me, See the friends 1've waited long to see, Memories of Lee. The 1952 edition of the gridiron Rebels ended their none-too-successful, but highly eventful season with three wins registered against seven defeats. The Rebs hit the road for the opening game, and bowed out to Spalding 12-0 after com- pletely mauling the Wolfpack in the first half. Milton was the outstanding player of the game, with everyone else one step behind him. Billy Cox and Frank 'fletl' Milton really put on a show for the Newnan fans as they led the Rebels to a 37-0 victory over New- nan. Milton gained 137 yards rushing with Cox passing for 201 yards. Newnan fum- bled on the kickoff, and Milton took the ball over to pay dirt. After that it was easy going! Coach Weaver used thirty men. Cox and Milton led the Rebels to a 19-6 victory over Baker before 3,000 fans in the first home game of the season. This was the first region 1AA game won by the Rebels. Next in line for the Rebels came a power- ful Albany eleven that resulted in a 25-14- defeat that was really a heartbreaker. The Rebs looked good in the first half when they moved 76 yards with the kickoff ball for a touchdown. Storey was the outstanding back for Lee. The Rebels then journeyed to Jordan, where they were handed their third defeat of the season 33-21. The Rebels kept their record of never de- feating LaCrange intact by going down to defeat by the Crangers, 19-0. LaGrange took the ball for pay dirt on the kickoff, and if Joe Vaughn, Bruce Green, and W. L. Strick- land hadnit played their hearts out on de- fense. the score would have been 50-0. Moultrie 12, Lee 7-Homecoming . . need l say more? For their fifth straight defeat, the Rebels were tossed by the Columbus Blue Devils 25-20. For the second time the Rebels out- playcd their opponents on paper only to come out on the short end of the score. Lanier High Poets trounced the Rebs to the tune of 46-20 in a region IAA game. Our offense played tag with the hard-running Lanier backs, who scored the most points that a Lee team had given up in years. The bright spot of this game was Wayne Stewart, who caught six passes. Billy Cox and Frank Milton closed out their high school careers in a blaze of record- breaking glory, leading the Rebels to a 58-0 rout of West Fulton. Cox broke three region IAA passing records, and Milton set one for pass-receiving and one for running, put- ting them on top in the region. Jimmy Har- rel showed his stuff by intercepting a West Fulton pass, and Merrill Creathouse really looked like the player the coaches were ex- pecting all year. This ball game was a great way for any ball team to close the season, and the only regret we have is that there weren't more like it. ll!! Today schools are located in Thomaston, East Thomaston and Silvertown. In the white schools of the '4Tri-Citiesi' there are 2,700 pupils enrolled and a faculty staff of 115 members. An enriched program of instruction is being offered to all students, the curriculum of the school being based on the needs and interests of the pupils. The people of the Tri-Cities have enjoyed 128 years of continued progress in educa- tional opportunities for their children. ln 1899 a new Cotton Mill was chartered and erected in the area immediately to the northeast of the town of Thomaston. The manufacture of cotton products first began in Upson County in 1833. Several factories were located on Tobler, Swift and Potato creeks where water power was available. When the railroad came to Thomaston, transportation forced the moving of these factories to other locations, while some were destroyed by the Yankees', during the War. The Thomaston Mills, having begun operation in 1899, soon outgrew the original plant and other plants were constructed. The village of East Thomaston was chartered in 1909. Pupils from East Thomaston attended school in Thomaston until the early 1920,s when a grade school was erected and known as R. E. Lee Annex. Today there are 600 pupils enrolled in the grammar schools of East Thomaston and approximately 180 who attend senior high school from East Thomaston at Robert E. Lee in Thomaston. The village of East Thomaston now has a population of 4-,000 people and three modern textile plants operating 24 hours per day. In 1929 the B. F. Goodrich Company of Akron, Ohio, purchased Martha Mill which had been operating under the management of the Thomaston Mills. A large plant was constructed and the city of Silvertown was chartered and built in 1929. Three modern brick schools were erected and the first elementary school began in Silvertown in 1929. The city of Silvertown has a population of over 4-,000 people. There are more than 700 pupils enrolled in the three grammar schools while some 200 students from Silvertown attend high school at Robert E. Lee in Thomaston. Robert E. Lee Institute has served as the high school for all students from Thomas- ton, East Thomaston, Silvertown and most of rural Upson County since it was char- tered in 1875. This school now has an enrollment of 780 pupils and a well trained faculty staff of 35 members. The school has received both state and national accreditation for the past 50 years. Students are now housed in' five modern, well equipped buildings, of Colonial architectural style, on a picturesque campus one block from the Court House square, in the southeastern section of Thomaston. This is the same site of the first public school of the Tri-Cities-the Thomaston Academy of 1825. Q25 51 020020020 wi Swimming, Dancing, Picnicking firffff fgfwffdf S' -1-f .
