E. Lee, our theme is repre- sented by a seventy-five-year-old grandfather clock whose twelve hours represent the twelve years. From the door in the bottom of the Grandfather Clock come twelve little animated characters, representing the twelve years and the twelve grades. It is our sincere hope that this Rebel will bring back happy memories of the wonderful times we have all had together: that it will be a Rebel you will be proud of both now and later: but, above all. that it will be a bond which will bring us together in the years to come. The pupils went into the one-story wooden building that morn- ing in the middle 1800's to take their places under one of the two teachers. Little did they know that so great a school would take its place. But the old Male and Female Academies had their day and ceased to be, for in 1875, ten years after the W'ar Between the States, a new high school was born. This school, chartered seventy-five years ago, was named for General Robert E. Lee, that matchless and noble leader of the South, with the thought that his name would inspire the pupils to lofty ideals and fine, moral character. The first senior class to graduate from R. E. Lee had only three members! The Board of Trustees having de- clared the course of study for this institution, and three of the scholars, Miss Mattie Gibson, Mr. Frank Oliphant tSee Illus.l, and Mr. W. C. Cunningham, having completed the course, they are declared to be entitled to a certificate of graduation. Professor Harrison in his dear address paid them high and deserving compliments. ' But what would those three graduates have thought had someone told them that later, in the seventy-fifth year of the school, there would be one hundred fifty-two graduates! Those three graduates went to school in the old Female Academy building which was in the next year replaced by the first R. E. Lee Institute building . . . a two- story wooden structure with a chapel on the second floor which served the school until an auditorium was completed in 1901 tSee Illus.l. This building stood about fifty yards south of our present main building. Would those three students have been amazed if they could have looked into the future and seen the large plant that we have today- a two-story brick building, an auditorium with a sating capacity of 800, a sixteen room annex, a 590.000 lunchroom, .fi tt. a gymnasium, a military building, plans for a 580,000 science building, a student body of 750, and a faculty ot forty! What fun they must have had back in the year of '75! The few pupils, many of whom had walked for miles to school, gathered at the call of the bell which was rung violently and heartily by the professor. The little old stove must have had many a frostbitten hand hovered over it those cold winter mornings, and the old oaken bucket must have quenched many a thirsty lip those hot May days. But the old bell that the principal rang has been re- placed by electrically timed gongs: the smoking stove, by a gas automatic heating system: the old oaken bucket. by sanitary iced drinking fountains: the scratchy slates, by typewriters, mimeographing machines, and fountain pens: the mud-covered boots and horse and buggies, by school busses and automobiles: and even the tin pail, which faith- fully held cold biscuit and sausage, by a cafeteria, serving hot balanced meals. Yes, it's been a long time since those good old days. but the Spirit of Lee still shines down upon the school, guiding us forward to new achievements and upward to higher ideals: and the search for knowledge and the mastering of language and science, the dominant goal of the students of 1875, is still the dominant goal of the students of 1950. We students of the Diamond Iubilee class are apprecia- tive of those who, in the long, long ago, laid the foundation and helped to make our school what it is today. We are also indebted to those fine citizens and teachers who have contributed to the growth and prosperity of our school in recent years. By SARA THURSTON :QPY I .-f.- 1 . , Q3 Gif 1 ....g . But what a year that has been! lt all started when l was in- vited to an anniversary party for limmy and Sheila Davis, Bud and Melba Duncan, and scads of others were there. We all had a won- derful time. Well, during the course of conver- sation, we began talking about high school days and that gave me an idea. l rounded up my BBI CBarbara's Bureau of investigation! and put them to work investigating the outcome of the 1950 Senior Class of R. E. Lee. This is what l found: Sonny McClellan, after studying surgery for fifteen years at Duke, has been proclaimed Butcher of the Year, l965 by the American Meat lnstitute. Betty Ruth Anthony, Eileen Walls, Martha lean Birdsong, Ronelle Kent, and Laverne Averett are directing traffic in down-town New York City. Martha Searcy, after ten years of trying to crash Hollywood, has at last settled down to teach piano. The Silvertown Seven, Barbara Cantrell, Myrtle and Myrtice Hale, Barbara Craft, Re- becca Kerr, Ellene Wheeless, and lean Pryor, have been named the most beautiful girls in the lohn Roberts Powers line-up. Preston and Patricia Harp still have them guessing as to Which Twin Has the Toni . Poor Doug Smith is in the hospital with a bad case of malnutrition. lt seems that his doctor cut him down to ten banana splits a week and it nearly killed him. loanne Varner, Sheila Wilson, and Barbara Keen, all Grade A nurses, along with 47 other doctors and nurses, are in careful attendance. Believe me, it takes every one of them. Oh, Yes! You should see the titles our group has collected. Bobby Milner and Doug Adames are both Olympic Tennis Champs, Martha Reeves won the title World's Best Dressed Woman, Martha McCarty coped the Miss America, l952 and later married a mil- lionaire, and Sam Maynard holds the World's Champion Middleweight Woman Boxer title. Delmas Whitten won the baseball crown for breaking the Babe Ruth record for home runs. Most of the girls are members of a very well known clan . the housewives of America. lessie Aldridge, Elsie May Callahan, Betty Burkett, Romie Lou Dowdy, Golden Burkett, Eu- genia Drummond, loyce Eubanks, Doris Frank- lin, Betty Harp, Margie Hobbs, Elizabeth Kirksey, Betty lean Morris, Alline Mauldin, and Willene Moye are just a few of the DOZENS!! Oh, yes! Cecelia Price, Marilyn Strickland, Martha Smith, and Christine Vaughn are President, Vice-Presi- dent, Secretary, and Treasurer, respectively, of the FHA lnternational. Dona Colquitt, Barbara Anderson, lackie Pettis, Edna Garrett, and Wanda Wade can currently be seen on the Varga Calendar. Ioan Teal is in Paris modeling French bathing suits that Ann Yarbrough designed. William Baughcum, Marvin English, Bobby loe Hamerick, Royal Phillips, Ray Dawson, Bobby Fowler, Everette Hall, Benard McLen- don, Kenneth McCrary, Harold Hopkins, Ken- neth Helms, Billy Hancock, Louis Watson, and lames Welch, are starring in the 749th perform- ance of the Womanless Wedding. Well, Hambone Hamlett, Bill Iones, and Troy Pfannkuche are real successes. They were chosen from fifteen other applicants to dig the ditches to irrigate Edmond Mathews' farm. Floy Black, Margie Smith, Betty Ernest, and Betty Wilson, between rides in Betty Ernest's jeep, are all successful secretaries to Glynn Mallory, perfume manufacturer. Bethel, Harry, and limmy, of lngram, Wil- liams, and Davis, DDS, have hung out their shingle which bears the inscription We Pull Anything ONCE!! Bill The Great Lover Dickens can cur- rently be seen making love to Nell Webb in the motion picture extravanganza ..... . Speaking of the movie set, Dale Kelly and Catherine Woodson are two topnotch comed- ians. They'll really go places! Virginia Helms, Sue Gordy, and Mildred Birdsong have opened an Escort Bureau. They escort the men!! Ann Forbus has at last realized her ambi- tion. She has opened an establishment. She's now known as Digger Forbus, the friendly undertakerf' George Nobles and Fred Trice have opened a large resort on the Coast. Ellis Bransford, Ralph Brown, Barron Yarbrough, Bobby Wood- son, Fred Smith, and Ernest Walker are the bellhops. The place is known as Little Alca- traz, and Skippy Presley, comedian, and lames Gill, folk-singer are featured. Alvin lsbell, after many years of experience is writing an Advice to the Lovelorn column. Iournalism requires much study. yet the studying does not come from the text books alone. Text books are essential to learning the fundamentals ot the course. and without them. cne's study may not include all that is needed to learn the ropes of iournalism. By actually making an interview, writ- ing the story, or covering a big tire cn the spot, a reporter is able to put into operation the things that he has been taught and to learn more as he performs these duties. A reporter is taught the meaning ot the inverted pyramid. and it is his duty to use that style. By meeting this one requirement in writing a news story, he has accomplished another lesson in the study of iournalism. The daily newspaper contributes much to the course. Students increase their knowledge of leads and other details of iournalism by their examination ot articles in the daily papers. These stories, often studied by the class, help the tuture journal- ists improve their writing. Having a school paper gives one the experience and studying that is needed to hold the position ot a reporter. editor. circulation manager. or others. for writing them up go to work immed- iately so that they will be ready to turn in on Tuesday. On Tuesday, the stories written in the students' best iournalistic style. are given to Miss Ruth Bennett, the advisor of the class. who takes them to the Times ottice immediately after school where they are later published. These stories are written and printed for the benefit of those out- side of Lee's halls, telling parents and others about the work carried on at Lee by both teachers and students. OUR FIRST NEWSPAPER After mad dashes and a hectic month, the first issue of THE REBEL YELL came out on October 21, 1949. To begin with, none of the deadlines were met, so the staff was really pushed for time. Since we had no press we had to mimeo- graph our own paper which took hours and hours of slaving. After ruining five stencils and struggling with three more our patience was strained. Night often caught us draging home with pencils chewed and brains exhausted. Reviewing the fruits of our first efforts, wo discovered, among other things, that we had no headlines on the sports page. in spite of all our mistakes, we showed a good profit in both finances and ex- periences. The Rebel Yell' is supported entirely by subscriptions. lt carries no advertising. Consisting of four pages, front, editorial, sports and feature. it is mimeographed ai 1. PRESENTING THE REBEL YELL EXTRA! EXTRA! The dream of the school has come to lite. Our school newspaper is now here. The Iournalism department rolled the first issue off the press today. Through the cooperation of our advisor and administrafion officials, our staff has spent many hours of sweat and toil making a newspaper possible for the students. Our sincere thanks go to Mrs. George Childs for her help in typing and mimeo- graphing the paper. No one seems to realize the problems we have in making a newspaper possible lor the students. The reporter must find news to write about, outline his topic, write the story. then type his story before the deadline. When the article is written, it must be handed in to the copyreader, who checks the material for all gramatical errors. The copyreader then hands the material to the managing editor, Ralph Brown, who in turn arranges the material in order for the paper. The material is then typed for mimeographing which is the final step in publishing the paper. present, although a printing press is ex- pected in the future. It is sold for five cents a copy and all profits are used to make a better paper. From the profits, the staff has purchased. in addition to the required paper and stencils, a set of style uses, shaders, letter guides, cartoon books, a stapler and other equipment. The mimeograph machine has also been moved to the book room next to the class room. Editor ..... Assistant Editor . . Managing Editor . Assistant Managing Editor . News Editor . . . All you have to do is support a successful candidate. Lard Iohnson is now president of the Doris Day fan club, and Iulia White is still in love with Montgomery Clift . . . but, what girl isn't? Honestly, Sara, I was never so shocked! I had such great hopes for Sylvia Reeves, but . . .Il Two days ago I ran into poor Sylvia, She was washing clothes. She now is the Wife of a plumber and has eight children. And she was such a sweet girl! Iimmy Huckaby and Alton Treadaway battle every Saturday night at the city audi- torium in the Golden Gloves tournament. Iimmy is managed by Ioe Helms, and Alton by lackie Lewis. The president of the new Rocket Air Ways is none other than lackie Arnold and he has some swell air hostesses with Betty Smith, Frances McLemore, Mary Io Ellerbee, Io Ann Dunaway, Louise Callahan, and Minnie Lou Cromer. lack Mills is now keeper at Grant Park Zoo in Atlanta where Roy Salter sells popcorn, Billy Ballard vends peanuts, and Iunior Cooper keeps all bits of paper off the beautiful park lawns. When we were Seniors, Bennett Hancock was elected president of everything. Well, now he's elected King . . . of the Hobos. There he reigns with Crown Princes Bobby Nichols and Lamar Lussi. ' Tommy Tatum, Kenneth Rogers, Renay Rentroe, Eugene Ivey and Ray Gulledge have, because of their hard work and sincere effort, become janitors in the New York Herald- Tribune building. Who knows, if they work hard, they may become copy boys eventually. Doris Vining, editor, Belle Butts, advertis- ing manager, and Antionette Harris, business manager, with, the help of Ellene Warren, Vir- ginia Sledge, Hazel Powell, Lucile Oglesbee, and Doris Covington are putting out a first rate fashion magazine called Model. Among the richest men in the United States is Robert Williams. He has made a cool million selling Kick-a-poo Ioy Iuice. Betty Ruth Cox, Rhunette Dinkins, Christine Ellington, Marlene Salter, Marion Vaughn, Ieanette Smith, and Rubye Shaw are now suc- cessful feminine versions of the Fuller Brush Man. Last of all, Urte Voigt, famous interpreter, is trying to teach Einstein Watkins to speak German. Bob says he's going to Germany to do some research but from what I've seen of the German girls, well . . . Well, I must close for now. Congratula- tions on the success of your latest book.
