O OfQWOf In the deep South lies Thomaston, Upson County, Georgia-our home. Due to the topography of the land, the mild climate, and the fertile soil, cotton is our most important product: It is from cotton-from seed to finished product--that the majority of the population obtain their livelihood. In the agricultural region around us the cotton is cultivated, ginned, and baled. Then it is ready to be made into some- thing useful. We are proud that this can be done right here at home. Thomaston boasts of four mills-Martha Mills, Silvertown, which is the textile division of the Goodrich Company, and the Thomaston Cotton Mill, which includes Old Mill, Peerless, and Bleachery. Not only are our mills important to the people of Thomaston, but these mills are furnishing vital materials to the War Department in the form of tire cord and cotton duck. We, the students of Robert E. Lee Institute, are proud that we may share in the fight for freedom at home by cooperating with the mill authorities in turning out these materials on schedule. There Were approximately 770 students enrolled at Lee at the beginning of the second semester. 184 of these come from outside of the city limits 205 from the city proper, and from our mill villages-Silvertown 178 and East Thomaston 193. Of these students 67 are working full or part time at one of the mills.
