Q 5 Q 1 - 'P' JE , lv CN Wx f O OfQWOf In the deep South lies Thomaston, Upson County, Georgia-our home. Due to the topography of the land, the mild climate, and the fertile soil, cotton is our most important product: It is from cotton-from seed to finished product--that the majority of the population obtain their livelihood. In the agricultural region around us the cotton is cultivated, ginned, and baled. Then it is ready to be made into some- thing useful. We are proud that this can be done right here at home. Thomaston boasts of four mills-Martha Mills, Silvertown, which is the textile division of the Goodrich Company, and the Thomaston Cotton Mill, which includes Old Mill, Peerless, and Bleachery. Not only are our mills important to the people of Thomaston, but these mills are furnishing vital materials to the War Department in the form of tire cord and cotton duck. We, the students of Robert E. Lee Institute, are proud that we may share in the fight for freedom at home by cooperating with the mill authorities in turning out these materials on schedule. There Were approximately 770 students enrolled at Lee at the beginning of the second semester. 184 of these come from outside of the city limits 205 from the city proper, and from our mill villages-Silvertown 178 and East Thomaston 193. Of these students 67 are working full or part time at one of the mills. Since our school is thus linked up with the textile industry We have chosen The Story of Cottonn as our theme for the 1945 REBEL.. Cgilze made! Staff 4 XX, 1 I '- y 'K-'mx' Ay , w W X fl-v yi? Lee lnstitute curriculum since 1938, is a phase of vocational education where- by a junior high school student, sixteen years of age. can work and study at an occupation of his or her choice and receive units of credit toward graduation for the work on the job as well as classroom study. This classroom study is arranged to correlate as much as possible with the work experiences on the job. This program is designed especially for the students who do not anticipate going to Cllllegle, unless to further his or her education in the occu- pation. The D. C. T. program enables the student, upon graduation, to enter the field of trade or business with a better knowledge of the occupation and to start full-time work at a better rate of pay. The apprenticeship stage is passed by the student while still in school. To be able to get in the required hours of work and in order to be allowed to leave school early for work, the class must meet at 8:15 in the morning before many students are up for their breakfast. The classroom work is divided into two different periods, one for general related study and the other for technically related study. ln the general related period, the students study together subjects that are generally related to all occupations. During the technically related period the individual studies sub- jects that are directly related to his or her occupa- tion. Since being a member of the IJ. C. T. class prohibits most of the students from participating in the other extra-curricular activities of the school, the D. C. T. students have banded themselves into an organization which is known as the U. C. T. Club. Through this medium, recreation of the proper type, as well as worthy projects are planned and participated in. This club meets on the third Thursday of each month at a designated place, for a business meeting. According to the ruling of the club, a social or outing is held each time the class has an attendance of over 97 per cent for a four weekls period. These outings are planned largely as out door parties, in order to give members a chance to get on the out- side for a change. The climax of the club year comes in ltlay when the annual IJ. C. T. Banquet is held, and the employers, school board, and other dignitaries are invited as guests. At this notable occasion work of the past is reviewed and higher goals are set for the future. Here the officers for the coming year are installed. Yes, the occupations may be diversified, but the cooperative spirit is present in every project and activity.
