LEE INSTITUTE Thomaston, Ga. DEDICATION We, the Senior Class of I933, in order to show our appreciation for the faithful work, the untiring ef- forts and the unselfish spirit of hirn who has been a friend to us during these past four years, dedicate the seventh volume of The Rebel to Mr. Richard l-l. Taliaferro j. I X in . f I 1 A Y i . W 3, i 1 l r I Herein do you behold the last recorded years ot the Class of '33, Out from the walls of our Alma Mater we go, guided by the light from her swinging lanterns. ln our hearts we bear the peace, the hope, the confidence wthat fellowship within her walls has brought us. ln this book there is a secret clasp, which, pressed in later years, will call before our eyes the ghosts ot pages, too many and too dear for print, leaves clear or blurred, that these two covers bind- which we alone may see. Herein you may behold some of the brighter scenes selected from innumer- able charming pictures ot these days. Faculty I I. Classes Activities IV. Military V. Athletics VI. Lee Institute. ln the fall of that year, fourteen youngsters, unaware of the fact that they were destined, eleven years later, to form the honored group of charter members of this class, gave us our first chapter. Despite some evident hardships, we soared upward through the grammar grades, l-lard work and determinatIon, coupled with the thrill of campus joys, marked our progress through these years. Our untiring and patient teachers gave their time, thought, and leadership to prepare us for high school. ln l929, with many priceless additions to our class, we entered high school, an eager band of Freshmen. With a reverence to the upper classmen, we continued the race. Our class sent football stars on the field, and basketball winners on the court. Cheer leaders hailed from our crowd to help hoist the White and Cold higher in the breeze. Our boys and girls were always there when things happened, putting their shoulders to the wheel. ln our Sophomore year, we were the first to start the Biology garden and the first to donate to the l-lome Economics Cottage Fund, We won the Class Night competi- tive cup when we were juniors. Each year during the four in high school, we sent representatives to the District Meet. Then suddenly, mingled with sadness and eagerness, we saw that our academic and athletic endeavors were soon to be terminated. Admitting that our career has missed brilliancy and perfection, but proud of our accomplishments, we have reached our goal-graduation from the Senior Class and commencement into Life. With this, our hats go off to Mr, Smith, Mr. Taliaferro, and each teacher for guiding us here. As the members of the Senior Class scan the pages of this book some time in the future--when the present has become the dim past, l am sure that they will derive satisfaction from their achievements. Thus, with our thoughts in the future, we stand with our faces to the sky, flinging our challenge to Life-The Seniors of '33l MYRA jENKlNS, Class l-listorian. IUNIOR CLASS Colors. Nevertheless, Coach lvlatt went to work with a stout heart and firm hand. The confidence that Coach lvlatt placed in his team inspired every boy on the squad to do his best for the school, the team, andthe coach. PERSONALS lvlcSWAlN, Quarterback-lvlac was the man depended upon when yardage was needed. Being Quarterback, it was he on which fell the responsibility to call his signals and pull 'ole Lee out'of a tough spot. HARP, Hight Half-- Speedy will be greatly missed next year in all forms of athletics. DANIEL, Left Half-When the going was hardest Peg was traveling the fastest. SHORT, Fullback-- Bear was a hazard to the other team's chances. REEVES, Right End- Smoochie added many worries to the opposing team in intercepting and receiving passes. ' WOODALL, Right Tackle- Woody was the man depended upon to open up a hole in the line. , THOMPSON, Right Guard- Tarzan was a brute among men. HIOHTOWER, Center- Foots, in spite of many difficulties, was still plugging when the final whistle blows. OASSETTT, Left Guard-A good man and a good sport. IONES, Left Tackle- Fronnie was instrumental in halting many line plays. TURNER, Left End- Artie played his game and came up smiling. After the season was underway, it was evident that the Lady Rebels had a fine team built up from some who had had previous varsity experience, and others who were out for the first time. This was proved by the fact that only one team marred their record previous to the District Tournament, LILLIAN NELSON, Center-Lillian is always right there when she is needed She held her ground with each and every center she met, be she ever so tall. SARA BETHEL, Forwcrd- Teny's delight is in slipping off and leaving her guard wondering where she is. She is fond of small courts built on stages. MELBA HUDCINS, Forward-Melba gives guards trouble, too. She likes to get the ball under the goal, where no one can do much about it, and shoot. lt's in! They will get to be Seniors. LUCILE NELSON, Guard-Lucile has that adhesive power as a guard that is very irritating to the forward! As an over-head passer-she's great! Another Senior. LYNDA LEE, Guard-Lynda is new at guarding but no one would guess it. She gives forwards plenty of trouble, too. KATE DANIEL, Guard-Kate likes to guard-tall centers. She proved that one night when she exasperated one such person because she would stay with her! MARY BETH ALLEN, Guard-Bessie seems to always come out from among opposing forwards with the ball in her hands! Myra jenkins, Doris McMakin, Chlor Mathis, Sara l-larvey, Lillian Braswell, and Lucile Brasvvell contributed faithfully to the welfare of the team. 1933 t l 1 , Ettlil . . .111 BOYS' BASKETBALL Lineup Reeves. , . She told me to use my imagination, and shoot, I can't write a theme like that, I never could use my imagination. And a year from now. Who knows what's gonna happen a year from now? I couIdn't even tell what will happen a week from now-l'm no fortune- teller or prophet. One day I strolled into the New York Public Library and asked for Myra Brown's latest book of Nursery Rhymes. The librarian informed me that she did not have it, but perhaps I would be interested in seeing a good picture upstairs that Alfred Franklin was showing. I took the elevator to the l200th floor and asked the Robot where I could find Franklin's Theatre. I-le pointed to a door at the end of the hall and when I entered, imagine my surprise when I looked up and found Myra len- kins was the usher who had rushed me to my seat by a special sliding device. The first thing on the program was a Flip, the Frog Comedy directed by Ed I-lawkins, with Marianne Mallory doing the lyrics. Next came the news reel, and I found that Martha McGee and joseph Ellington had just completed a Non-stop Flight around the world. George Hightower had gone to Neptune a few months before to live, and Arthur Fallin and Marvin Adams were running air taxis between the Earth and Neptune, with stops at Mars and Saturn. The hostesses on these planes were Cleo Pasley and Lorine Chasteen. Next I saw Martha Franklin being crowned Queen of Swimmers after swimming the Atlantic Ocean. Ruth Almand was shown going over her newest animal hospital, the world's largest. Among the doctors there, were Perrian Patterson, Dexie Mills, and Velpoe jones. Martha Mc- Kenny was Superintendent of the Rat Department, Ruby Black was in charge of the Dog Department and Louise Kersey was in charge of the jersey Cow Department. Next was shown the newly crowned Colf Champion, Iosephine Pressley, with her favorite caddy, Fred Mallory. Then was shown the Queen of the Rose Festival, Hazel Cox, and her maids of honor. These were Cecil Pasley and lohnnie Smith. Next was shown an interesting play in the latest football game-R. E. Lee Institute versus Notre Dame. I-lere I found that after 45 years of coaching, Billy Bentley was now the water boy on the Lee team. Then I learned that james McKinley, Edmund Cassett and Fred Daniel had just perfected an automatic back-scratcher with a non-breakable mirror. Martha Daniels was shown in Mars at the Airplane Terminal, on her flagpole, establishing a new record for flagpole sitting. I-lowell Thompson was shown receiving the winner's cup in the Ugliest Man Contest at I-lollywood. India Pittard was testing pills for energy units. Billy Blount was now, after fifty years of practice, the champion pancake 1933 REBEL flipper of the world. Mildred Morgan had discovered a new rare earth element which was bringing her a preposterous income with Fred Harp spending it for her. Louise Moore, Macie McDaniel, lewell Lawrence, and Nadine Shepard had astonished the world by buying Australia and establishing technocracy there. This news reel was followed by the feature picture, The Sorrows of Rudolphof' starring Randolph Pasley and Flora Phillips. In the circus scenes in this picture, I recognized Willie Pearl Colquitt walking tight ropes, Earl English as the tallest man, Iulian O'Neal as the strong man, and Love Mallory as the Barker for the main show. People had grown so large by the year i990 that Pruitt Woodall was the midget in the circus. ' After leaving the theater on my way home, I heard a voice which sounded strangely familiar to me. Turning I found Lucile Nelson just behind me crying, EXTRAl EXTRA! All about the appearance of the Sweetheart of the World at the Roxy Theater in Radio City Tonight! After greeting my old friend, I bought a paper and found that it was lewell McKinley who would appear at the Roxy Theater. In this paper I also noted that Sara Daniel, Ruth Adams and Harry Turner had sailed for Africa, as missionaries. Looking on the editorial page, I was surprised to see that the paper was edited by Owen Reeves, and that Christine Trice and Catherine Yates were Society and Sports Editors, respectively, Turning a page, I read that Crawford Paulk had given a million dollars to the fashionable Miss Dimples' School for Girls, where Melba Hudgins had been teaching French for the past 25 years, and where Mattie Ruth Pasley was the instructor in Aesthetic Dancing. lake Lewis had per- fected a gadget for telling time without looking at a watch. In the latest gangster war, two of the gangsters' Molls had been arrested-Louise Bishop and Geraldine Holloway. Fannie Mae Driver and Clymentine Woodson were getting rich since they had founded A Home for Retired High School Principals. On my way home, I stopped in at the Little Church Around the Corner, and found Terrell McSwain had his time well occupied with marrying couples from all over the world. Arriving home, I turned on the radio and sank into an easy chair, only to be interrupted from my thoughts by Everette Smith's crooning. Giving the dial a twist, I heard Margaret Black giving advice on how to capture a husband, She had become the Dorothy Dix of this generation. As I was not interested in this, I turned the dial and heard Loice Covington making one of her campaign addresses. By jovel One of my old classmates was running for President of the United States. Here l've been imagining the wildest sort of things, when I could have been writing that theme. l'd better get up and start on that thing. Goodness gracious!
