1969-70 Filled wiih Acfivifg. Spirit Long before the school year began there were workshops-for cheerleaders, newspaper staffs and the TRAVELER- and practice and more practice-the band, the Lee-Ettes, the football team- all combined in a summer effort to pre- sent a unified front when school started in September. Before 1969-70 began there was the delivery of the first summer annual and the arrival of Anne Ebbing, a foreign student from Vinstra, Norway. Anne lived with lVlr. and lVlrs. E. C. Klin- zing. And then school opened Sept. 2 with a rush of computer programmed classes and the confusion of freshmen, but the adjustment came soon as Howdy Week took its toll of seniors vengeance and freshmen pranks. The fall also saw the annual Booster Club Bar-B-O at Aggie Park and a skit, chronicling life from the first grade to freshman year in college. But as always October comes after September. The month was noted for its initiations as the band, choir, and Key Club made their marks on the faces of the prospective members. The flour was poured and the mess was madeg but never the less, initia- tions took the death of no one. The Age of Aquarius themed the Talent Show. James Fugua captured Best Showman ti- tle as his group won first in speciality. The Senior Class took second. The Key Club sponsored its annual Leadership Banquet held at the Steak Cellar. Dr. Dan Long was the keynote speaker. The French Club was out to prove its spirit for the Roosevelt game as they promoted enthusiasm with a car bash and a kidnap breakfast for the foot- ball team. The season saw the selection 16 of football sweetheart and lVlr. Lee, Shir- ley Buchanan and Greg Dahlberg. One week later was the second Lee Home- coming and the first large scale one. Lou- Anne Lipke was named Homecoming Queen as the Student Council spearhead- ed efforts to unit graduates. Football moved into bi-district, re- gional and then the semi-finals at the Astrodome in Houston. The Vols and the Hebert Panthers clashed in the first high school match in the famed dome. The Vols were the first to win. And then came state and the excitement of travel- ing to Waco to face the Wichita Falls Coyotes. The heartbreak came as the vic- torious Vols failed to come from behind, losing to the northern team. Christmas vacation intervened, but the spirit did not cease, as the Chamber of Commerce and the Booster Club honored the foot- ball players, Lee-Ettes and Band mem- bers in the Convention Center with a banquet. The Stratford Ball followed the semester exams with Susan Baros being crowned Queen. LaViIlita was the scene of A Time For Us. The drama department's first produc- tion was the musical comedy, Pajama Game, starring James Fugua, Becky lVlc- Carty and Jonny Barnard. ln February the Nlilitary Ball honoring ROTC students was held at the American Legion Hall. The Lee On-the-Spot team captured honors again this year as they defeated Central Catholic and Texas Nlili- tary lnstitute. The team coached by lVlr. Don Jennings was composed of Don Pate, Dennis Pape, Gerri Briggs, Richard La- zor, Walter Moore and Linda Jones. All in jest, the Faculty-Booster Club basket- ball game saw the playing of boosters against faculty, with the teachers victo- rious. The Student Council changed the spring events to include a Twirp Week in place of the backwards dance. A hairiest Iegs contest was held with Senior Terry Jackson capturing best honors. Spring brought Easter vacation and trips to lVlexico City and New Orleans for the Spanish Honor Society and the French Club. Elections and the one-act play, Summer Tree, filled the middle spring activities. Not to be out done by the cry for saving the earth, the Science Club sponsored an Earth Day observance April 22 with a trash cleanup and a lunchtime skit. The Junior-Senior Prom, held at USAA, featured the theme of Atlantis. ln Nlay, the Nlontage staff presented its Son of Nlontage assembly to preview the literary contributions. The academic awards assembly and the drama awards followed close as the end of school was nearing. The publications staffs celebra- ted the end of their joint efforts with a picnic to recognize outstanding members. The Seniors had their picnic at Raymond Russell Park as the last week ofischool began. Ceremonies were held Nlay 27, for the class of 1970 at Virgil Blossom Athletic Center. Linda Chatfield and Linda Jones were the top graduates. The year ended with the closing of school on Nlay 29 as faculty members graded tests and averaged grades and stu- dents' thoughts wandered to summer va- cations and the arrival of the 1970 TRAVELER and the beginning of school in late August. l l 1 l l l l 4 l l l l l l
