The pri- mary duty of the social studies teacher is to help each student to acquire the knowledge and develop the abilities and characteristics which will enable him to live effectively and harmoniously with other human beings, taking his place as a useful participating citizen of the community, the nation, and the world. The Social Studies Department seeks to create an awareness in the student of his rights and responsibilities as a citi- zen. lt also develops an understanding of our heritage and an appreciation for the role of the United States in to- day's world. SCIENCE DEPARTME T The Science Department seeks to awaken in pupils a desire to use in their daily lives the knowledge provided by science. lt also provides an interest in the various fields of science so that the student may choose his or her profession before entering college. The Science Department awards each year the Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award. This department attempts to develop a sound sense of values and better buying practices. Cultivating wholesome attitudes of students is also one of the department's objectives. As a means of emphasizing the total program, the Home Economics Department sponsors activities throughout the year. Luncheons and other types of entertainment are planned, prepared, served, and hostessed by the students as actual learning experiences.
