SCIENCE DEPARTME T The Science Department seeks to awaken in pupils a desire to use in their daily lives the knowledge provided by science. lt also provides an interest in the various fields of science so that the student may choose his or her profession before entering college. The Science Department awards each year the Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award. Lee High School Band has received many honors and distinctions during the past nine years. In 1958 they set the all time record by winning 23 All-State medals in a single year and again led the state in 1959, 1960, 1961, and 1962 by winning 21, 20, 20, and 19 medals respectively. The Lee Band is the only band in Alabama in class AA to have received six consecutive superior ratings from the years 1957-1962 at the State Band Contest at the University of Alabama. Last summer H9641 the band represented the Department of Alabama at the VFW National Convention in Cleve- land, Ohio, and was otticial band for the State of Alabama at the New York's World Fair, The 1963-64 Lee Band again received a superior rating at the State Band Contest at the University of Alabama and placed 2nd in the nation in Cleveland. This Band was also invited to be the Guest Band at the Instrumental Conductor's Conference at the University ot Southern Mississippi, and was the only Senior High School Band in the South so honored. GLEE CLUB-The Glee Club at Robert E. Lee, under the direction of Miss Ellyn Dudley, is comprised of three hundred singers. All music students are allowed to take part in the activities of this group. One of the main attractions every spring is the annual concert given by the Glee Club. The Glee Club performs at school assemblies and ceremonies throughout the year. The pri- mary duty of the social studies teacher is to help each student to acquire the knowledge and develop the abilities and characteristics which will enable him to live effectively and harmoniously with other human beings, taking his place as a useful participating citizen of the community, the nation, and the world. The Social Studies Department seeks to create an awareness in the student of his rights and responsibilities as a citi- zen. lt also develops an understanding of our heritage and an appreciation for the role of the United States in to- day's world.
