The responsibility of citizenship also requires that students master the interrelated skills ot communication-listening, speaking, read- ing, and writing, Included in the program is a parallel reading course, designed to awaken in students appreciation for great litera- ture as one manifestation ot eternal beauty and truth. For the past tive years, the National Council of Teachers ot English has awarded students in the department certificates ot honor for excellence in its competitive writing pro- gram. Through work in the elective creative clubs for boys and girls, students have had essays, short stories, and poems published in Young America Speaks, a publication sponsored by the Los Angeles Poetry Association and participated in by leading young writers of America.
