We focused on national events. Jimmy Carters first year as President uncovered few mysteries about the man. He strongly advocated the return to a society more conscience of morals, but the Bert Lance affair placed a dark stain on his previously clean record. The signing of the Panama Canal Treaty sparked national controversy. The outspoken among us sent Lees contribution to the voice of opposition in the form of a candid petition. As individuals, we seldom permitted the outside world to invade our private convictions, but our exposure to an abundance of ideals demanded that we look deeper into ourselves and locate our position in a modern, changing society.

Uncontrollable factors forced us closer in our high school community. Yet, above all we were individuals of a personal world. Looking inward, we discovered a maturing young person, grow- ing faster than we could help - one-fourth of our entire life spent by graduation day. We discovered stunning truths. Impressions from the year would remain forever, and the self- image we had formulated during high school would influence our attitudes throughout life. We would remember the pleasant firsts - and likewise, we would recall the sadder times, those occasions of hurt feelings and alienation from security. Yes, a party in one sense, but the year brought traumatic situations to each of us. We looked at our generation of the late '70s: Alcoholism on the increase, teenage suicide reaching epidemic proportions, broken homes -these harsh aspects offset pleasant memories for many. Nevertheless, we thrived on happiness and lived on in spite of anxieties. Whether we lived as conformists or exhibited true individualism, each of us, each citizen of Lee, contributed to the pulse of student life.
