We focused on national events. Jimmy Carters first year as President uncovered few mysteries about the man. He strongly advocated the return to a society more conscience of morals, but the Bert Lance affair placed a dark stain on his previously clean record. The signing of the Panama Canal Treaty sparked national controversy. The outspoken among us sent Lees contribution to the voice of opposition in the form of a candid petition. As individuals, we seldom permitted the outside world to invade our private convictions, but our exposure to an abundance of ideals demanded that we look deeper into ourselves and locate our position in a modern, changing society.

lntrusions from the outside world forced us to accept a fact: Lee High School represented a mere speck in the realistic society of man. This onslaught of reality forced adaptation, while influencing ever-changing opinions and testing our maturity. Houston Community College hit us directly. Plastered on the front of Lee was a rude, yellow sign - symbolizing a realization that our school was not truly ours - only a set of walls temporarily housing our bodies. The martyred Joe Campos Torres met injustice across town, but the question of police authority invaded the campus area. Rapid construction near the school meant less parking space. lnevi- table parking fines and 527.50 tow charges threatened us constantly, leading to cries of unfair as police officers passed down Unity every week with no remorse for the tickets given. Although Mayor Fred Hofheinz freely vacated the leading position in the nation's 5th largest city, the '77 mayor's race attracted no single vibrant personality. The three major candidates, Briscoe, McConn, and Ginther, resided in the Lee area. Crackdown attempts on pornographic establishments, transportation improvements, and the heated Westheimer Independent School District - each issue affected the Southwest Area. Nevertheless, the race received little atten- tion from students. LE gC5'3SlQr3 U7 - . Cuzaegfjtlfv SYSTQIDX' E CAMPUS 8
