Mr. Dan Schmiech, History Sam Houston State University, M.Ed. Mr. Leroy Henderson, History Wiley College, B.A. Inspiring students in the realms of the past, present, and future - this is the goal which the history, government, and economics teachers at Lee strive to achieve. While influential speakers ap- prised economics classes of knowledge of such matters as insurance and taxes, oth- ers informed government classes of some of the many aspects of law. History teachers, meanwhile, sought to promote an interest in material other than that studied in the classroom by bringing to each student's attention television spe- cials and public exhibits pertaining to his- tory. Opportunities for each teacher to en- rich his knowledge of history and govern- ment were never lacking, inasmuch as each was encouraged to' attend sessions such as the Freedom Foundation Seminars. Lee's social science department, head- ed by Mr. Harris Butler, provided students with a wide range of courses, such as gov- ernment, economics, and world, Ameri- can, and English history. Ample explana- tion can be provided for the fact that many students graduated from Lee had the opportunity to gain a true and lasting knowledge of their country. Languages Cultivate Diversity Inasmuch as Lee'offers a variety of for- eign languages, including Spanish, French, German, Russian, and Latin, many students find it relatively easy to select the language which best accomodates both their interests and personalities. By pro- moting diversity in learning, the foreign language department, headed by Mr. Marshall York, motivates an interest in cul- tures other than our own. The Latin Honor Society, organized at Lee for the first time this year, sought to enhance such an interest. In the special progress Spanish classes, iunior and sen- ior students concentrated on the study of authors and literature to further prepare themselves for the Advanced Placement Examination. Additionally, the National Spanish Examination provided competi- tion with other students across the nation. Not only in Spanish, but also in most of the other languages, contests such as poetry recitations provided a necessary in- novation to perpetuate both interest and challenge for each foreign language stu- dent at Lee. i t Mr. David Webb, Spanish Texas Southern University, B.A. 28 in Learning W, If 'RW .4- Mrs. Charlotte Outlaw, Russian Mrs. Henrietta Thomdii GGFIWH Syracuse University, M.A. State University of Iowo, M.A. 164426 Mrs. Walleah Tennyson, Latin, French at Z f ll, , I ,14 - ,- M, .4 .
