Students Attain Foundations for College on themes and writers, the English depart- ment at Lee, headed by Mrs. Velma Bren- f' '1 Having adopted a new textbook based nan, continually strives to instill in students an appreciation of both writing and Iitera- f ture. In an attempt to explore the hidden messages and themes which writers try to -- convey, teachers encouraged sincere dis- cussion on the part of the students. As each teacher endeavored to provide students with a program that would enable them to excel not only in college, but also in everyday living, most students, having been instructed in the aspects of lit- I erature and grammar, are graduated from ialitzzf inglish Lee with a deeper cognizance of the Eng- ' ' ' lish language. 2' ' Q II ' I g.5 0 Q , i 0' Pg 90's'o' tj vo ,Q 0 'H o o .9 - . . -ff: fs 'o '.'0 9r0 'u : l I . - ,, : : 4- . ,'o 'i:v:':s01n g.g,'0,'e,'.- '4,'n,0, b ..o',nu , p:..:0q::,:,x - :.,:u.u.-2b:..:.,ua, l u nic, ,Q age ncy, 4 n o , o Q I Q o . .n,g0e,O.Q gl'o'9ooi,fs f N' v, us' 090: li 0 a ,B 0 5 Q , O o o I If K lunge e0vtoo. 0, es' 00.00. Mental alertness, logical reasoning, an ingenious mind - these are a few of the prerequisites for mastering the field of mathematics. Headed by Mrs. Thera Yoes, the mathematics department at Lee seeks not to create mathematical geniuses, but to instill in each student a desire to learn to his full capacity the many measure- ments, properties, and relationships of symbolic quantities. Inasmuch as Lee of- fers related math, geometry, algebra, trig- onometry, elementary analysis, analytical geometry, computer math, and calculus, each student had such opportunities. For those interested in pursuing more complex aspects of mathematics, Mu Alpha Theta offers a challenge as students listen to informative speakers and prepare for the nationwide MAA test, in which all accelerated classes compete. Also, to insure that each student was taught from the most modern material, a new textbook was adopted for the alge- bra classes. The concern which teachers perpetuat- ed was noticeable throughout the year as each realized mathematics was, and still is, a basic foundation in education. 4. As Mrs. .lorry diligently tries to demonstrate the cor- rect way of serving, Katie Gibbons and Suzanne Bul- lock iust f'lon't seem to catch on. 24 l Calculations Stimulate Alert Minds i wfffwss Mrs. Cynthia Ratcliff, Mathematics r Texas Southern University, B.A. he f ' Q Mrs. Thera Yoes, Mathematics Southwestern State College, B.S.
