machines cannot replace people Mr. Shivers and Jimmy Erwin knew, and everyone else knew as well: 1969 was the year machines came to Lee. Some of the machines were small yet conspicuous-like Mr. Shiveris scooter. Some were long-awaited and definitely welcomed-like the air-con- ditioners. Another-the computer-was unseen but tremendously powerful. No matter how complex or efficient any of these ma- chines were, though, they could never do all of the things that people in a school must do.
