v b 1 c. J LEEWA Y 1967 ROBERT E. LEE HIGH SCHOOL STAUNTON, VIRGINIA VOL UME 8 SmUMTOW PUBLIC LIBRARY i P WlWUIJ ' 2 STUDENT LIFE.2 FACULTY .16 STUDENT BODY.42 HONORARIES 108 ACTIVITIES.118 SPORTS 154 CLOSING .192 3 Foreword This Year, Lee High opened her doors to over 1200 students, with almost as many different ideas and beliefs. Throughout the year, it is the job of the faculty to mold these students into a group with one goal—to do their best to better themselves individu¬ ally and their school as a whole. In striving for this common goal, a certain spirit develops. It is seen in the tense faces at the big games and in the happy faces on the dance floor. It can be heard in the laughter of the cafeteria and in the quiet rustle of the classroom. But mainly, it is a feeling that exists whenever one or more students are present; it is a feeling that there is something special in being a part of Lee High, and that this year is special in some way in which no other year can be. We, the staff of the 1967 Leeway, invite you to share with us “THE GOOD TIMES WE’VE HAD.’’ 4 5 6 8 10 si :• : 11 12 14 15 FACULTY Many new faces have appeared among the faculty and administration of Robert E. Lee High School this year. Our various departments have received much new equipment of great value from Booker T. Washington High School. A new ninth grade science lab has been equipped and is being used by some of the science classes. Lee has also added a language lab used by the Spanish and French departments. This has not only increased our knowledge but also has added to “The Good Times We’ve Had”. The Staff of the 1967 LEEWAY takes pride in dedicat¬ ing this year’s annual to the principal of Robert E. Lee High School, Mr. Collin E. Smither. Although Mr. Smither often is working “behind the scenes” at Lee, the influence of this dedicated man can always be felt. Ad¬ vocating the highest standards of achievement, he is al¬ ways available to praise when deserved and to reprove if needed. Mr. Smither well deserves the respect and gra¬ titude of both the faculty and the students for being a friend as well as a fine educator. 18 Lee Now Has Two Assistant Principals Mr. Alphonso H. New Senior Privileges Granted This Year Entering Lee High as eighth-graders—the last class to do so because of the addition of the ju¬ nior high school—the Class of ' 67 can look back on five years of growth as they gradually became more and more a part of Lee—joining clubs, cam¬ paigning for office, making the team, suffering through exams. But mainly, they now look back on their senior year as the year they became a class, the year they really became the leaders. Maybe it was the first time they marched into assembly or the first time they had a class meeting that they experienced this feeling of uni¬ ty, but the feeling has grown throughout the year as they have worked together—putting on the Va¬ riety Show; participating in Senior Day; finding their long-awaited Senior Prom well worth the many hours of hard work; and finally, following in the footsteps of the many seniors of other years as they received their diplomas, becoming the fortieth class to graduate from Lee High. And now, confident in the sound background and high standards provided by their years at Lee, the Class of ' 67 looks ahead to the future, knowing they will be separated by the many different paths they will follow, but joined by the memories of all the good times they have had together. 44 PATSY LEE AREY BEVERLY KAY ARMSTRONG PATRICIA LOUISE ATKINS STEPHANIE ANN BAILEY Susan Diane Arbaugh . . . DAVID MATTHEW MYER STEPHEN LINTON ZEIGLER 78 79 JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS: President, Todd Hobbie; Vice-President, Peggy McCormick; Linda Fox, Treasurer; Secretary, Linda Sherrill. Class of ’68 Prepares for First Prom The Junior Class, upon becoming upperclass¬ men, began to realize their responsibility as students of Lee, and as individuals. They kept their class well-informed through initiating regu¬ lar officer meetings. The successful undertaking of various projects such as raking leaves, a bottle drive, and a party, enabled them to spon¬ sor the annual Junior Prom. As individuals, Juniors gained valuable experience by sending representatives to Girls’ and Boys’ State. They prepared for their future careers by taking College Boards and consid¬ ering suitable colleges. While continuing the traditions of the past, the Juniors have added new ideas and made many improvements. 80 Patti Adams David Aldhizer Barbara Armstrong Wilma Armstrong Sandra Bailey Sandra Ballengee Dennis Bell Patricia Bell Peter Biehn Janie Blackburn Darlene Bogan Timothy Bosiack Earl Bragg Tamara Bragg Linda Bright Cathy Brown Donna Brown Camilla Bryant Phillip Bryant Deborah Buchanan Anita Bullman Patricia Burnett Geraldine Burrows William Cabell 81 Danny Campbell Diane Campbell Robert Campbell Mary Carlisle Jerry Chandler Gene Clatterbaugh Carolyn Coffey Darryl Coffman Judi Combee Ronald Cooke Patricia Cox Wayne Cox Calvin Craig Toni Crowther Sharon Custer Joyce Dalinger William Darcus Robert Depew Woody Dixon David Doyle Jack Dozier James Druff Bonnie Ergenbright Ann Fitzgerald 82 John Fitzpatrick Elizabeth Floyd Clarence Forsyth Linda Sue Fox Bobbye Fulwider James Funches Donna Marshall in typing class. Class of ’69 Active in School Affairs Members of the Sophomore Class found that this year they were well on their way into the years they will spend at Lee. Any fears that they had held as Freshmen have now disappeared as the Sophomores do their part to carry out the tra¬ ditions and raise the standards of the school. Sophomores have become active in many school organizations in which they did not participate as Freshmen. A sense of belonging has developed. Sophomore girls worked long and hard to repeat the victory won in powderpuff football last year. Somehow, even all that work couldn’t stop the Seniors from winning the game. The girls’ strenuous practice was not in vain, however, because as Seniors, they look forward to another chance to win. Many Sophomore boys have led the Lee High Varsity and Junior Varsity teams. The class looks forward to seeing these stars continue this good work. The next two years promise to be even more exciting and prosperous for the Class of 1969. As upperclassmen, they will be the leaders of the school, upholding the fundamental ideas and beliefs on which the school has stood firm so many years. 90 Christine Anderson Nelson Ashby Cecile Baker Donna Barton Harold Bauserman Thomas Beam Richard Beard Shirleen Becks Judith Bell Robert Bell Thomas Bell Charles Blackley Jeri Blackwell Brixton Booth John Bowman Brenda Bradshaw Barbara Brand Susan Brown Rommell Bryant Douglas Calverley Elizabeth Campbell Terry Campbell Carolyn Carper Cathy Carty Julie Cash Joyce Cason Martha Cassidy Thomas Chrisman Cynthia Clark Charles Clatterbaugh Sandra Cline Stuart Coughlan Dennis Collins Rebecca Corbett Carolyn Craun 91 Roger Crickenberger Marilynne Curry Jerry Dalton Morline Darcus Richard Daugherty Thomas Davis Stuart Dawson Ronnie Dedrick Phyllis DelSole DeeDee Dennison Sophomores Experience First Lab Class Nancy DePriest Regina DeRuiter Deborah Dietz Jerry Dodd Sue Durrett Karen Eppard Beverley Ervine Harold Evans Carlton Farrier Beverley Faught Brenda Fitzgerald Delores Fitzgerald Audrey Fitzpatrick Vicki Fix David Flower Donald Folks Patricia Fowlds Jackie Free Debbie Gayhart Debra Gilbert 92 Jeffrey Gilbert Sharmon Goff Gordon Graham Kenneth Green Deborah Griffin Carl Grimm Douglas Hall John Hall Martha Hamrick Douglas Hanger James Harris Peggy Henry Judith Herndon Viriginia Hevener Charles Hildebrand Patsy Hite James Hodge Janet Hodge Valerie Hodge Stephen Houff Linda Houser Linda Hoy Homer Huff Danny Huffman Thomas Hutchens 93 Dana Johnson Larry Jones Rebecca Kennedy Logan Kerr Beverley Kincaid Stuart Kincaid Judith Kiracofe Michael Knicely William Knight Beth Lescure Sophomores Cheer for the Spirit Cup. Then came schedule cards and an adjustment to the new environment at Lee High. The Freshmen elected homeroom and class officers and set up class government. Many joined organizations and clubs sponsored by the school such as the Pep Club and the Tri-Hi-Ys. The J.V. basketball and football teams broke rival Lane ' s 27 game winning streak. The Freshmen took part in the Homecoming game and dance. The class of 1970 had the distinction of being the last Freshman Class to enter Lee High School. 98 Sylvia Alexander Marion Andrews Carey Arehart Wayne Armstrong Debra Ashworth Barbara Bailey Tracy Baldwin Larry Barcomb Frank Baylor James Becks Terrence Benton Cynthia Biehn Donna Bogan Nancy Boone Donnie Bosserman Gary Bosserman Dianne Boward Diana Bowers Sheila Bradds Nancy Bridges Deborah Bright Kathy Bullman Robert Burnett William Burrows Frank Bushman Katherine Butler Camilla Cacciapaglia Robert Campbell Judith Carr Gayle Cash Susan Cash Raymond Chaplin CeLeste Chevalier Allen Chittum Charles Chittum 99 Michael Clem Betty Clough Deborah Coe Charles Coiner Marcus Coker Carlene Condon Victoria Cook Ronnie Corbett Kay Craft John Crawford Freshmen Experience Initiation HHIM Toni Crum Debbie Davies Bonnie Davis Judy Davis John Deaver Deborah DeBarr Douglas Degen Charles Demastus Wanda DePriest Kenneth Dillon Debra Dodge Rebecca Dull Jacquelyn Eakin Beverly Easley Donnie Elia Mary Elkins Thomas Elliott Dennis Felsher Jeffrey Felsher Elizabeth Finch 100 Jane Finch Thomas Fischer Ella Fitzgerald Priscilla Fitzgerald Robert Fitzgerald Sharon Fitzpatrick Debra Fix James Foster Carol Fountain Douglas Fry Patricia Fry Mary Garber Christine Geimeier Leslie Gibson Gail Goodrow David Gordon James Graf Barbara Graham Sharon Grimm Gary Grollimund Carolyn Gutshall Douglas Hahn Jane Hamrick Robert Ham 101 Lynn Hanger Cynthia Harris Susie Harris Susan Harsch Betty Hartsook James Hartsook Eric Hedberg Bruce Henry Vicki Henson Linda Hicklin Deborah Higgs Mary Hobbie Beatrice Hobson Brenda Hodge Deborah Hodge David Hoover Bradley Houff Steve Humphrey Judy Humphreys Janet Hutchinson 102 David Hutchison Mary Hyden Daniel Jackson Jay Jeffreys Peggy Jenkins Geneva Johnson Clinton Jones Jeffrey Jones John Jordan Frank Kaminski William Kearns Gregory Kelley Rose Kennedy Benjamin Kern Nancy Kerr Ronnie Keyser Ophie Kier Charles Kincaid Rita Kite Deborah Knopp ! Hanger, adviser, Carol Chevalier, Sarah Lamer, and Sam Graham. Effective Honor System Continues at Lee Three years ago the Lee High Honor Council was formed to help strengthen the Code of Honor. The basis of this honor system is the four-point Honor Code, which is printed on cards given to each student. The Council stresses the usage of these cards to make students more conscious of their responsibilities to uphold their honor system. The 1966-67 Honor Council is composed of five seniors, unknown to the student body, and of Mrs. Sara G. Hanger, faculty adviser. There are two methods by which a student can be reported, by a teacher or by a student who uses the box that has been placed in the office for that purpose. A person’s name is given first to the teacher concerned and that student is watched. If then, the teacher sees fit, he or she will refer the student to the Honor Council. When the student comes before the Honor Council, his violation is discussed with him and appropriate measures are taken. The purpose of Lee’s Honor Council is not to punish but to try to help its fellow students. 110 Delegates attending Boys ' and Girls’ State were Mike Kennedy, and Ted Sutton. Faye Weakley, Lee Finch, Sarah Larner, Ricky Cook, Delegates Learn More In high schools throughout Virginia, members of the Junior Class are selected each year to at¬ tend Boys’ and Girls’ State at William Mary and Radford, respectively. This week-long summer session proves to be an invaluable experience as it provides these young people with the chance to learn first-hand the workings of their govern¬ ment when they set up their own mock govern¬ ment. The delegates are first divided into twelve cities ' , and into two parties, the Nationalist and the Federalist. Mayors and other local officials j i i i i About Government are elected, and each city then elects representa¬ tives to the State Nominating Convention, with nominations for governor, lieutenant governor, and attorney general. The week’s activities are climaxed by an inaugural parade. They also come away with lasting memories of new friends they have made and of the fun and outstanding entertainment. When the young people selected for this honor return home, they are better able to understand and more fully appreciate the system of govern¬ ment under which they live. ill All-District and All-State team members are Steve Spitzer, Greg Bosiack, and Alan Richardson. All-District and All-State Team Members All-District football team members are elected by the players of the Valley District for the offensive and defensive teams. The All-State teams are chosen by the coaches throughout the state. Greg Bosiack made third team All-State and Steve Spitzer and Alan Richardson received honorable mention. The same three players were elected to the All-District team. 112 Members of Regional Band: Beverly Ervine, Diane Rusnak, Becky Kennedy, Danny Thompson, Carole Summers, Vicki VanFossen, David Jackson, David Aldhizer, Jimmy Morris, Beth Potter, Faye Weakley, Steve Sensabaugh, Brady Kirby, Stuart Coiner, Meredythe Sanger, Carolyn Whitfield, Danny Jackson, Jack Smith. Fourteen Students Chosen for Regional Band Representing Lee at the All-District V Band Clinic held at Riverheads High School were 14 members of the Lee High Band. They were chosen on the basis of a try-out at Lee, and then had another try-out at Riverheads for chair position in either the Concert Band or Workshop Band. Then the nearly 200 students from 40 high schools spent the major part of the week¬ end in preparation for the concert on Sunday which nearly 1000 persons attended. Participation in this yearly event is a great honor for these young musicians, rewarding the hours spent in home bands and in private prac¬ tice. It provides the excellent discipline of quickly adapting themselves to a new director and to the other players in mass rehearsals in order to prepare an outstanding concert in only two days. This is a tiring but very rewarding ex¬ perience for all who participate, and they return to their own bands with new ideas and renewed enthusiasm. 113 The 1966 Debate Team: Peter Hobbie, Carol Chevalier, Affirmative; Rick Seyford, Marc Chevalier, Negative. Debate Team Earns District Championship To prepare members for the district tourna¬ ment, the 1966 Debate team participated in a heavy schedule of interscholastic debating and tournaments. The team traveled to the University of Richmond for an early season tournament, where the Negative team placed seventh. At the George Washington University tournament in April, the school placed second out of the sixty- three participating schools, and the negative was rated the best in the tournament. After winning the district championship for the third consecu¬ tive year, the team won the Fort Defiance Invita¬ tional as final preparation for State. The Debate team, Peter Hobbie and Carol Che¬ valier, Affirmative, and Marc Chevalier and Rick Seyford, Negative, placed second in the State l-B competition. All four members of the team also received individual honors during the debate sea¬ son. 114 Regional Delegates: Ann Obenschain, Judy Reeves, Beverley Massey, Carlton Farrier, Carolyn Wade, Camilla Bryant, Sue Wiseman, Susie Bryant, Bonnie Ergenbright, Pam Wooten, Ca¬ thy Brown, Peggy McCormick, Jerry Cash, Tim Vickers, Buzz Assembly Choir Members: Sue Wiseman, Ann Obenschain, Su¬ sie Bryant, Mary Lynn Harman, Carlton Farrier, Judy Reeves, Camilla Bryant, Pam Wooten, Beverley Massey, Sharon Hanger, Huntley, Hubie Hall, Meredith Derr, Ray Patterson, Mike Houff, Marcus Coker, Dennis Gregory, Douglas Walters, Dennis Collins, Donnie Carter. I Thomas Opie Average—96.957 VALEDICTORIAN Top Students of Class of ’67 Twenty-seven members of this year’s senior class were inducted into the National Honor Society during a very effective assembly program. It began as these stu¬ dents marched into their seats. Dr. H. L. Bridges of Mary Baldwin College spoke to everyone about the type of student who is eligible for the National Honor Society. They are chosen on the basis of scholastic achievement —they must have maintained an average of 90 or above on all work at Lee—as well as on the basis of having shown qualities pf service, leadership, and character. Following Dr. Bridges’s speech, each student was intro¬ duced by Mr. C. F. Kurtz, assistant principal, and given a certificate by Mr. John A. House, advisor. This is an extremely high honor because, nationally, less then ten percent of any student body is eligible for membership. The students of the Lee Chapter have re-established a tutoring service for students which proved to be beneficial to the members and to their pupils alike. S.C.A. Initiates Spirit Cup This has been a year of service for Lee’s Stu¬ dent Cooperative Association as they have tried to introduce worthwhile innovations and yet continue established traditions. This year, the selling of official Lee High de¬ cals was introduced as a fund raising project. Student Directories were also sold, and the an¬ nual Talent Show was a major source of income as well as an opportunity for individual expres¬ sion of talent. The S.C.A. made definite strides toward pro¬ moting school spirit by sponsoring Homecoming week in the Fall, and the presentation of a Spirit Cup to competing classes. To encourage stu¬ dents to take more pride in the appearance of their school, a school-wide Clean-Up Day was held. This year’s S.C.A. worked to benefit Lee also by continuing such projects as leading the Pledge of Allegiance each week, the A.F.S. pro¬ gram, and Student-Faculty basketball game. 120 1 Senior Representatives: Sharon Hanger, Cindy Barnett, Kay Snyder, Greg Bosiack, Rusty Cassidy, Andy Kiracofe, Sue Clatterbaugh, Judy Reeves, Jeanne Richardson, Susan Menk, Wiseman, Faye Weakley, Jim VandeWater. Published by the journalism classes of Mrs. Louise M. Crisp, the Leeword’s new look appeared in 10 issues. This included two special issues— one covered the S.C.A. elections, and the other was a special senior issue. The Leeword staff, headed by co-editors Cindy Barnett and Jim VandeWater, worked hard to cover a wide variety of topics and activities in an effort to include in each is¬ sue something of interest for every student. McClung, Adviser, discusses tne material for the annual with Jeanne Richardson, Editor. This year’s annual staff has given the Leeway a new look, in its use of a new kind of paper and type, and in its use of a mosaictype layout, in which all pictures start in the center of the paper and follow a straight line. But the most important changes came in the appearance of certain sections, such as the Senior section and the Faculty section. For the first time, candid shots were used, capturing the teachers in the characteristic poses with which their students are familiar. A faculty index was also added this year. As the staff of the 1967 Leeway spent the months required in putting into one book a year’s memories, they kept in mind their goal of capturing as accurately as possible the spirit of all the good times that we’ve had at Lee High. The Record provides the students an opportu¬ nity to display their creative talents in the cate¬ gories of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. This year’s Record staff encouraged students to sub¬ mit material to the magazine by holding a liter¬ ary contest in the fall. Art received a def¬ inite emphasis this year and occupied a special section in the magazine. Working closely with the Record adviser, Miss Elizabeth Whitelaw, the editors-in-chief, Carol Chevalier and Karen Kincaid, spent many hours trying to make the 1966-67 Record one of the best magazines Lee has had. Lee High Welcomes Eric The Lee Chapter of the American Field Service began this year with its first official event of wel¬ coming Lee’s A.F.S. student, Eric Persson from Hassleholm, Sweden. Eric was honored soon af¬ ter his arrival in Staunton with a picnic given by the A.F.S. members. In November, Eric was intro¬ duced to the entire student body during a special A.F.S. assembly. Throughout the year Eric has been an active participant in the A.F.S. club’s goal of acquainting the student body with the purpose of the club’s program—to gain a broad¬ er, international understanding of a land, its peo¬ ple, and their customs. The club worked toward their goal, having as guest speakers in various assemblies, exchange students from other participating A.F.S. schools. Large delegations represented Lee High’s A.F.S. chapter at district meetings and forums, and more and more students realized the impor¬ tance of the A.F.S. program, benefiting not only the exchange student but also the entire school. 129 Journal Staff Members: Carole Summers, Sarah Rimel, Linda Crone, Editor; Calvin Lee, Herb Land, Toby DeBarr. Journal Is Broadcasted Bi-Weekly The Journal is Lee’s bi-weekly broadcast over WTON, planned and presented by members of the Journalism classes. The object of the Jour¬ nal is to make the public aware of what is hap¬ pening at Lee, through reports on various activ¬ ities and through interviews with school leaders, editors of school publications, and members of the athletic teams. Having received last year a first place in the radio division at SIPA, this year’s Journal staff has worked to continue this standard of excellence. The Lee Journal reports on what goes on inside Lee High. 130 Library Club members: Carol Ramkey, Cindy Biehn, Phyllis Del Sole, Martha Cassidy, Jeanne Snyder, Stephanie Bailey, Sharon Grimm, Sharon Carper, Alfreda Cole, Charlene Condon, Mrs. Brooks, Sally Berry, Clayton Obenschain, Sue Hartman, Emily Deitrick, Barbara Armstrong, Janet Claffey, Adrian Vaughn, Katy Butler, Miss Crawford. 131 Robert E. Pep Club Increases in Membership Nicknamed the “New Pep Club” because of an average attendance of around 200 members and a written constitution, this year’s Pep Club worked constantly to promote enthusiastic sup¬ port of the entire student body for Lee’s football and basketball teams. The Pep Club carried on its activities through various committees. The Project Committee was responsible for the Pep Club’s bulletin board and for posting the names and numbers of the play¬ ers in the gym, each on their separate basketball. Probably most familiar to the students were the colorful posters in the halls, which showed the team the loyalty and support of their school. Other committees, the Constitution, Goal Post, and Social, worked hard to better the Pep Club and the school spirit. Through such projects as selling pep ribbons to the students, the Fund-Raising Committee helped finance the many activities of one of the most ac¬ tive Pep Clubs Lee High has had. 132 Ronnie Masincup, President of Lee High’s Pep Club, spoke to the student body on school spirit in an assembly. Pep Band Helps Spark School Spirit The Lee High Band was very fortunate to have as their new director Mr. Robert G. Sanger, formerly the director of the Nelson County High School Band. Marching season found Mr. San¬ ger and the band hard at work each morning at 7:20 in the stadium in preparation for the half¬ time shows put on at each home football game. Also the Pep Band was on hand at both home and away games, and at pep rallies to help pro¬ mote spirit and enthusiasm. The band also ap¬ peared in both the Staunton and Waynesboro Christmas Parades, and gave their annual Christmas Concert. The band then began their serious and very important preparation for the District V Band Festival, held this year at Hand- ley High School, in which the band’s perfor¬ mance was rated by three judges. A successful year came to a close with the annual Spring Concert. 135 Debate Club Gives Practice Speeches Debate Club Members: Tom Opie, Ted Grant, Sandra Bailey, Bob Graf, Carol Chevalier, Jack Druff, Lee Finch, Judy Herndon, Toby DeBarr. Knowing that speaking ability, thorough knowledge of the subject, and quick thinking are absolutely necessary to a good debator, the members of the Debate Club, under the coaching of Mr. Richard Gordon, spent the first months of school in studying the fundamentals of debating and in giving practice speeches and debates. Then in February, the Club began its schedule of debates. They debated not only area high schools, but participated in several tourna¬ ments, such as the University of Richmond Tour¬ nament, the William and Mary Tournament, which is a two-day event, and the George Washington University Tournament. In particular, the staff owes special thanks to Mrs. Alma McClung, the adviser of the annual, to Mr. Collin E. Smither, to Mr. Charles Kurtz, and to Mr. Garnett Owens, who were always available whenever information or advice was needed. It is a little sad to come to the end of a publi¬ cation such as an annual because it means coming to the end of the year. Yet, at the same time, it also means the beginning of a new year —for seniors moving out into the world in many directions, for underclassmen moving into new positions of leadership and responsibility. There will be new faces, new ideas, new directions for growth. But one thing will remain unchanged— the memory of all “THE GOOD TIMES WE’VE HAD”. 204 I 1
