THE RECORD ROBERT E. LEE HIGH SCHOOL STAUNTON, VIRGINIA 1955 STANLEY WILSON, Editor In troduction We, the Class of ‘55, are proud to present the first annual published in our enlarged and modernized school. Ever since the first day that we of this year's senior Class climbed the hill and entered the doors of Lee High, the new wings of our school were in some stage of their development. First there were the plans, then came the actual drilling and blasting, but for the Seniors, these experiences were climaxed by the day when we could at last carry on the tradition of marching into our spacious, new auditorium. As we look over the past few years and review in our minds the marvelous change in our school, we stop and think of our own growth during our years at Lee High. We hope that as persons we have become as strong in character and faithful in our love of man- kind as our school has become strong in foundation and has been faithful in its guidance of us as we pass- ed through its halls and classes. SO as we say good-bye to Lee High and to our friends, we want to leave with you in this annual a few of the things that have meant the most to us dur- ing our years at Lee—the exciting basketball games, the unforgetable dances, the friendly chats in the halls, and the seriousness of the classes. The purpose of this class taught by Mr. May is to bring to the students the consciousness that their high school learning can be carried into their future life. This fact is especially important during these times when democracy is experienc- ing her hardest struggle for existence. Reterence The library has fared well in the expansion program and is now double its former size and very beautiful. Increased size means increased duties, and mem- bers of the library staff headed by Miss Crawford help to make the books and the room more usable for recreational reading and research. James Kivlighan, Miss Crawford, Wilson Back. Fine Arts Mr. Linzey, George Jordan, Dana Wilson, Dorothy Gordon. Students in the art classes under the supervision of Mr. Linzey are encour- aged to express themselves in working with clay, construction paper, water colors, and tempera paints. The students artistically arrange examples of their work in a display case in the corridor. The students are always willing to lend their talents for any projects in the school. Industrial Arts In this class taught by Mr. Wenner boys receive instruction in mechanical d awing, woodwork, aad other similar arts. In the enlargement of our school a new Industrial Arts room was added, so, in addition to their regular work during the first semester the boys did an excellent job of setting up the new shop. Harold Walker, Mr. Wenner, George Jordan. Natural Science Stanley Wilson, Lewis Crickard, Mr. House. Physics is under the instruction of Mr. House. The work is divided into two parts—experiments and mathematics. The experiments are prepared to illus- trate the textbook, and the math work covers all types of math taught in school. This course enables students to follow up their high school work with science courses in college. Mathematics This is Miss Stoddard’s solid geometry class. In this class students’ power of reasoning is developed as they learn to think in three dimensions—length, wi dth, and breadth. In this picture, spherical triangles are being discussed. Wayne Farrar, Kenneth Monroe, Miss Stoddard, Tommy Blackburn. Home Economies i Z ee Wanda Vines, Crystal Spiece, Joetta Trayer, Miss Foster. ’ class the Miss Fcster teaches Home Economics. In this “homemaking’ students receive instruction in health, nutrition, and grooming, as well as training in child care and nursing. Vocational Office Training Mrs. Garber is the Vocational Office Training Coordinator. V. O. T. is a co-operative part-time training program which combines vocational instruction wit) supervised job experience in an office occupation, Instruction is offered on transcribing machines, electric typewriters, calculators, on filing and on business conduct. This course prepares the student for full-time employment upon gradu- ation cr completion of the course. Shirley Corbin, Mrs. Garber, Fonda Lee Folk, Nancy Myers. Musie Mary Jane Gregg, Mr. Sanger, Charles Whisman. Some sixty students, as an extra curricular activity, form the Lee High School Band. Each of the students receive instructions once a week from Mr. Sanger during a regular school period. Besides their lessons each week, the students work hour after hour on general practices and formations: however, they feel justified as they remember the honors they have won. Some of these honors are: First Place at the Armistice Day Parade in Harrisonburg; First Place at the Christmas Parade in Staunton: and Sécond Place in the Christmas Parade at Waynesboro. Physical Education The Physical Education classes at Lee High consist of a well rounded pro- gram of sports and lecture courses in health. In this picture we see the boys with their instructor Mr. Hern. The girls receive similar instruction from Miss B'ackburn. Mr. Hern, Gene Shaver, Bobby Baker. Foreign Languages pe sconces Linda Weaver, Miss Freeman, Joe Monroe, Mary Collins. Miss Freeman teaches this interesting language of our southern neighbors. In addition to learning to speak the language the students also study the back- ground and the customs of the Spanish people. Languages Senior English under Miss Whitelaw means traveling through the centuries of English history from the Anglo-Saxons and Beowulf to modern times. It means critical analysis and interpretation rates, research, parallels—but always it means writing—outlines, individual conferences, reorganizing, rewriting. Ruth Marston, Nancy Myers, Miss Whitelaw. Home Room Presidents First Row: Brenda Sutton, Donna Houff, Bill Gibson, Gene Shaver, Patsy Gibson. We in the Record Club were in for a big surprise. We hadn’t expected the hard work that went into publishing three issues of the magazine and the annual. Every Monday and Wednesday morning, in addition to many afternoons after school, we went into Mrs. McClung’s room to read and correct copy. Then there was always a rush right before the magazine was actually published because we had to proof-read it several times. Of course, during the entire year there was work on the annual planning what was supposed to go where, taking pictures, and writing copy. But the last two weeks befcre the deadline, we really had to “put our noses to the grindstone”. As this goes to press, we hope that all our efforts will be rewarded by win- ning several awards at the S. I. P. A. Convention, Staff: Stanley Wilson Editor; Betty Ann Folkman and Mary Jane Greene, Associate Editors; Jane Houseman and Judy Doering, Assistant Editors; Doris Redner, Art Editor; Joe Alexander, Business Manager; Bill Belshee, Photo- grapher; Mrs. Alma H. Our club, with Miss Emma Stoddard as the sponsor, has carried out many worthwhile projects. At the beginning of the school term, we sponsored the sale of used books as an aid to the students. Throughout the year the members provided for the sale of school supplies to the students. We also placed posters in the halls to encourage the students to study. Our club sponsored the annual “Football Hop” in honor of the football team and also assisted the PTA with their Christmas Dance. We have tried to promote school spirit and encourage student attendance at football and basketball games by publicizing the games and arranging for loud- speakers at all the home football games. Our club bought megaphones for the cheerleaders during the basketball season. Members of the SCA assisted in the Dedicatrcn Ceremonies and served as guides during Open House. We also assisted at the District Music Festival by registering the delegates, Officers: Kenneth Monroe, President; Jean Sheffer, Vice-President; Ann Glover, Secretary; Lewis Crickard, Treasurer; Miss Emma Stoddard, Advisor. Fourth Row: Pete Prichard, Tom Grine, Tommy Blackburn, Danny Barkhouser, Charles Anderson, Stanley Wilson, Wayne Clark. We of the Alpha-Delta Hi-Y are proud of our accomplishments during the past vear. One of our successful undertakings was the dance we gave to raise money for World Service. For this worthy cause we also sold Christmas trees. As a service project, we sponsored a drive to collect magazines for Western State Hospital and King’s Daughters’ Hospital. We felt that we extended the Hi-Y movement by organizing an Eighth Grade Hi-Y. In spite of our social activities, we also had a serious purpose. Another one of our projects was to attend a different church as a group once a month. This not only added to our spiritual life, but it gave us a knowledge of other forms of worship. Officers: George Lawson, President; Jimmy Kivlighan, Vice-President; Malcolm Reid, Treasurer; Mr. Edward Brant, Advisor. We in the Alpha Tri-Hi-Y have tried to live up to the standards of a Senior Tri-Hi-Y Club. We had several projects that we continued throughout the year. Tor example, each Monday morning a member of our club gave a prayer over the loudspeaker. Every month a different group of girls from our club made place cards to be put on the trays at King’s Daughters’ Hospital. We felt that we added color to our football games by selling buttons with “Tee” on them. In addition to this money-making project, our members prepared a covered dish supper and sold tickets to the public. Our club sponsored the first social that had ever been held after a basketball game. We also gave a Sock Hop in the spring. In keeping with the serious purpose of our club, we went to church as a group every six weeks. We also kept weekly records of the members’ attendance at Sunday School, Church, and Youth Fellowship; and we also noted whether they had daily prayer and daily devotions. Officers: Betty Ann Folkman, President; Mary Jane Greene, Vice-President ; Barbara Hunter, Secretary; Betty Clemmer, Treasurer; Mrs. Alfred S. Morgan, Advisor. We had two bake sales and a Hallowe’en Dance to raise money. As service projects we gave thirty dollars to World Service and helped a needy child at VSDB. Our club helped an old Negro man who lives in a one room shack by giving him food and wall paper. We also gave clothes to a boy at ¢ Wilson Rehabilitation Center. We had an impressive candlelight induction ceremony after which we had a mother-daughter banquet. Of course, there was a social side to our club, too. We had a skating party and also had a party after a basketball game. Officers: Judy Gayhart, President; Jean Leistra, Vice-President; Mary Ellen Lytton, Secretary; Anne Goodloe, Treasurer; Mrs. C. K. Our club was organized this year by Beta Tri-Hi-Y. As our goal for this year, we decided to send a boy from Palestine through school which will cost thirty dollars. To raise money for this purpose, we had a bake sale. Each mem- eer also donated some money which enabled us to reach our goal. Another of our projects was encouraging every member to go to church each Sunday. Occasionally our club went to church as a group. During the March of Dimes Drive various members took up money at the theaters to help in the fight against polio. The members of the band, under the direction of Paul B. Sanger, continued to grow in experience. We participated in two Christmas Parades in which we won a first prize and a second prize. We also won first prize in the Armistice Day parade in Harrisonburg. With this prize money we bought a bass horn. This year Kenneth Monroe and Tommy Blackburn represented the band at All State Band. Our band played for Open House when the new building had been completed. This year as usual we had a Spring Concert to show the public what we had been doing. Our band also took part in the District Music Festival, which was held at Lee High. Our members went to Winchester to participate in the Apple Blossom Festival. For the first time choral music is offered as a subject at Lee High. Our Mixed Chorus is made up of the members of this choral class. Our first appearance was at a Kiwanis Club luncheon. At Christmas time our group gave a concert, and we also sang for the Christmas tree lighting cere- mony in the park, after which we went caroling. The members of the Mixed Chorus sang at the Dedication Ceremonies this year. We are proud of the five representatives that we sent to All-State West Chorus. Those who went were Margie Floyd, Marilyn Kinzie, Betty Collins, Jerry Crone, and Harry Johnson. This spring we took part in the District Music Festival, which was held at Lee High. Our Choral group also enjoyed giving the Gilbert-Sullivan operetta, “The Pirates of Penzance’. To conclude the year’s activities, the members of the Mix- ed Chorus participated in the Spring Concert. Although we were late in starting this year, we had the largest membership in Dramatic Club in quite a while. For the first time we admitted Freshmen into the club. Our group was composed of forty members, most of whom were new. Under the direction of Miss Elizabeth Whitelaw, we worked on pantomimes, learned stage terms, and received instruction on stage movements. In addition to these activities, we often had play reading sessions in the afternoon’s after school. Officers: Ann Glover, President; Mary Collins, Secretary; Miss Elizabeth Whitelaw, Advisor. Third Row: Linda Craig, Mildred Yeakley, Ann Glover, Kelly McGavock, Donnie Jennings, David Ludwig. We are not really a club, but oh, how we work! We look important behind our new charging desk, but stamping books is only one of our many duties. There’s drudgery in shelving books and in endlessly reading shelves to see that the bcoks are in place. Perhaps, there’s more glamour to pasting and shellacking and fixing the bulletin board. All these jobs, however, are our part in making your library more useful to you, Officers: Kay Ramsey, President; Bobby Edwards, Vice-President; Joyce Armstrong, Secretary; Mary Jane Gregg, Treasurer; Miss Frances Crawford, Advisor. This year our club en tered a float in the Christmas Parade. At the District Convention in Waynesboro, our D. O. Club received several honors. In the spring we participated in the various activities at the State Convention in Roa- noke. During the year our club had several money-making projects. We feel that the F.B.L.A. has had a very busy and successful year. We entered a float in the Christmas parade and won first place. One of our club’s biggest projects this year was selling caps with “Lee” on them to school mem- bers during the foctball and basketball seasons. We had a number of bake sales and worked on personal appearance surveys with the businessmen of Staunton. Our club had a Valentine Dance, and within the club we held the following con- tests: Bulletin Board Contest, Exhibit Contest, Spelling Contest, Essay Contest, and a Miss F.B.L.A. Contest. LANG COMPANY STAUNTON, VIRGINIA AUTOGRAPHS Neier it is the nature of a craft to create an unbreakable tie between itself and the worker in that field, a heart attachment equal to lifetime devotion. One familiar example is PRINTING. Once editor, once compositor, or press- man catches the spirit of the shop, the spell is seldom broken. Like the odor of a camp fire, or a whiff of salt air, the beloved tang of printer’s ink, symboli- cal of a great profession, gets into your heart and soul. School Annuals, Magazines, Newspapers and Special Printing, all smack of it. It is an invisible link that binds all intelligence together. It is the stimulus for creation in business or romance. ‘This craftsmanship, this devotion to service and _ alert- ness to business needs, has nourished and developed an enormous industrial vitality, and whichever way the course of the future runs, the printer will always find himself able to adapt his helpfulness to new opportunity. hie oes ee es Years of experience have taught us!
