Readin g Considering the amount of reading that students were required to do, one might have thought that they got enough. However, reading during free time was both entertain- ing and a relaxing pastime for many students. Books covered a wide range of subjects and were easily accessible. A visit to the school li- brary or the nearest bookstore could give the reader information on :lmost any subject. One could find the novel he had heard so much about but never had the time to read. The contagion of popular books also in- creased book borrowing among students. Books were often seen being passed from hand to hand and from locker to locker. Two of the most passed books were JAWS and A SEPARATE PEACE. Despite long waiting lists for popular books, the devoted usually found a way to get their hands on a copy and spend hours eng- romed on its pages.
