uic Hey, listen to my version of New Orleans jazz. Maybe I should take up whistling. Kelley Copper is discouraged after the third try. F ootstomping and hand clapping ac- company the show of involvement and enjoyment of music. Some enjoy play- ing for their own pleasure, others to en- tertain, and still others enjoy simply listening. Guitars, pianos, and drums are among the most popular instruments: instruments that one can pick up and fiddle with. But where instruments weren't avail- able whistling took over. Those who were advanced whistlers were able to duplicate any song, with a wide-ranged scale. Singing alone with the radio or stereo was a major musical pastime for those who weren't musically inclined. Often butchering a song by singing off-key and improvising on the lyrics, they dis- regarded all musical techniques and comments from listerners to make their own beautiful music.
