Summer ended for the Rebels when Lee's doors swung open with the first bell. New traditions were added to the old ones and it was clear that another school year had begun. Rebels seem to thrive on spirit. They are con- stantly bubbling with excitement and it is their vi- tality that makes every day complete. Each year each class seems to have its own per- sonality. The spirit of the class of '76 is no different. They were definitely Rebels with a cause. Facult ,ii - 4. 1 . fn ,f A., M.- :f'f ,gf .. . V. 9 12 I wt. A I 4- dministration I . M til. E-1' it -- Everyday, the administrators of Lee counsel students toward their aim in life. These people endeavor to establish the best standard of education possible. Along with supervising the everyday school functions, they take active parts in providing a healthy, pleasant atmo- sphere of leaming by getting to know students personally. It is not unusual to see Dr. Neswick walking through the halls during school, chatting with stu- dents as they return to their classrooms after a during-class drink of water. Dr. Neswick never fails to extend a hearty greeting to the students at Lee. Dr. L. Here was a ring that stood for three years that I'd never forget . . . my senior ring. I leamed to love that year and the people that had touched my life. I put it on and once again I was re-living the excitement, the anticipation, and the glamour of high school life. I remember all the hours I spent meeting friends at Love's and the gravel pit and how those sunshine-filled days of friends and smiles made the days seem endless. We listened to music, planned parties, made floats, caught movies, waited for the SAT and ACT scores, ate pizza, cried at the last foot- ball game, wrote themes, picked on underclassmen, skipped class, signed each other's yearbook, and laughed about our most embar- rassing moments. The hallways were always full of pain, laughter, fear, and under- standing friends. I wished that my senior year could have lasted a lifetime . . . I realized that I couldn't go back to it anymore. Those years had spun by so fast that I wasn't aware that it was climaxing into a sudden close Cgraduationj. I turned my ring over and watched it glitter as the sun hit it. I was moved to recall all the important lessons that I had learned. The Re- bel flag flew proudly in my mind and I still listened to the Fight Song and Dixie as it played in my heart. Now, I have found myself at a dazed stand-still . . . out of touch with the old gang, out of security and protection with nothing but a piece of gold that symbolized the most honored time of my life . . . The ring that stood for the total experience and Robert E. Lee High School that I loved so much. Directed by Mr. Bill Collins, it is a well organized facility that is enjoyed by all. Food, air hockey, and pool seem to be the best part of all, but the Y.C. is also a place just to visit friends and use up leisure time. During lunch, people begin pouring in and the Y.C. starts buzzing with excitement and a roaring noise that voices and music bring. Brightly decorated in maroon and white, with Rebel flags embossed on the wall, the Youth Center pro- vides various activi- ties for Lee High School students. I2-1 A . . Kelley Copper is discouraged after the third try. F ootstomping and hand clapping ac- company the show of involvement and enjoyment of music. Some enjoy play- ing for their own pleasure, others to en- tertain, and still others enjoy simply listening. Guitars, pianos, and drums are among the most popular instruments: instruments that one can pick up and fiddle with. But where instruments weren't avail- able whistling took over. Those who were advanced whistlers were able to duplicate any song, with a wide-ranged scale. Singing alone with the radio or stereo was a major musical pastime for those who weren't musically inclined. Often butchering a song by singing off-key and improvising on the lyrics, they dis- regarded all musical techniques and comments from listerners to make their own beautiful music. b. W But Miss Hall, julie Wheat made me do it. unior i Falling behind the energetic senior class and a less active sophomore class, ju- niors readily displayed their enthusiasm. Readin g Considering the amount of reading that students were required to do, one might have thought that they got enough. However, reading during free time was both entertain- ing and a relaxing pastime for many students. Books covered a wide range of subjects and were easily accessible. A visit to the school li- brary or the nearest bookstore could give the reader information on :lmost any subject. One could find the novel he had heard so much about but never had the time to read. The contagion of popular books also in- creased book borrowing among students. Books were often seen being passed from hand to hand and from locker to locker. Team captains are Rusty Laughin, Russell Kellner Bryan Webb. Influencing skill and endurance, pride and unlimited spirit, the fearless stormed forward to unite Lee. Sharing elated triumph and forlorn defeat, the student body began evoking an intense spirit of union. For six long months, 64 young men devoted most of their time running, watching old films and lifting weights, spend- ing endless hours practicing, just to represent Lee High School throughout the district. These young men,.together with Coach Acree and his assistants, formed the mighty Ma- roon Platoon. Each opponent realized the Maroon Platoon was a tuff team to handle. The Rebels ended the season with a 6-3-1 record, which, we are proud to say, represented Lee High School very well. This page: Rebel men at work and at play. During the first half of the game, the Maroon Platoon powered its way from a ten point deficit to score four more touchdowns to win the game. On September 12, the Rebs played a great defense against the fired-up Snyder Tigers. After the smoke cleared, LHS chalked up its second big win.. Plainview's visit to Rebeland marked the close of a non-district play for the Rebel grid- ders as the Rebs were slipped another win. When Lee and Odessa met at Barrett Sta- dium, they were the only two undefeated teams in 5-AAAA. Again our Rebs proved themselves when .they blasted over the Bronchos. The Lee Rebels suffered their first defeat to the San Angelo Bobcats. Due to costly mis- takes in .the second half, the Bobcats took a commanding lead that the Rebels were un- able to overcome. Lee,s hopes for another chance at district champs were all but shattered by Abilene. With the loss to Cooper, the Rebels dropped to 1-2 in the district race. Lee's Clyde Gary accounted for all of Leeis touchdowns when the Rebels took on the Big Spring Steers. Lee moved to 2-2 in the district when they defeated the Steers. VVhen the Rebels and the Panthers met in Odessa, it was a tough battle all the way. Both teams were scoreless until the end of the third quarter when Permian -slipped by and scored a touchdown. Later in the fourth quar- ter they were able to add a field goal to win over the Rebels. The Eagles were let down as Lee defeated them by a score of 14-7. Lee's first score of the night came on a one-yard play by Bobby Humble. The 1975 game between the two Crosstown rivals proved to be a tough defensive battle that resulted in a tie for the second year in a row. Our Mighty Maroon Platoon chalks up another victory. Coaches johnson, Grady and Whalen have done a tre- mendous job with the Mighty Stonewall Brigade. Stonewall Brigade completed their season with a six win and four loss record. The greatly united team, along with it's efforts, managed to show its opponents the Lee j.V. was TOPS!! , Beginning the season with an early start, Lee j.V. worked out every morning, drilling, running and hit- ting hard. The fantastic footballers came through the season with a third place in the 5AAAA. By the seventh game, Lee J.V.'s most valuable play- ers were injured and out for the season. The Stonewall Brigade had come a long way. Lee J.V. practiced Labor Day in order to be ready for their first day. l.. I - Later as the year went by, it came time for the base- ball squad to begin its part in Lee's activities. Coach johnson and Coach Whalen put together two out- standing teams by working hard each day at practice. This hard work helped each member of the squads get in shape for the contests that came. All the boys put their efforts together and brought home many victories. Put- ting up with the crazy humor of Coach VVhalen, the jayvee team also had a successful season. As usual, there were plenty of ups and downs during tl1e season, but all in all, it was a good year for Lee baseballers. im E M H 'f f , .ink ffl p ' i- 7 C p 9 J v-- L'-1r9 '1.f...,.Y' V 4, ., -- , 'iP'f 'T'I , , .V '1':.,r:'L'E!.' I Its lunch tirnel Exercise is as important in track as in football. The boys practice sprinting betvieen the football field. Track team members aren't to be snickered at. If any- one says anything spicy to them, tl1ey'd better be able to run and run fast! A trackman never gets enough practice. Enjoy your freedom, it's Amer- ica's Birthday, was the slogan for Hope's show. Pre-show entertainment in- cluded Lee, Midland, and Per- mian High School bands, playing a few of their favorite tunes. Later Pepper Martin and his group set the mood for the night of comedy. Then singer Chris Noel sang a medley of songs. Then, the time we had all been waiting for . . . Bob Hope had finally arrived. Children swarmed the stage, gifts of appreciation were presented to Mr. Hope, and on with the show! He was his comedian-self with jokes, laughter, and songs for ev- eryone to enjoy. Rare Rainy Day i President Ford greets Midlanders as they welcome him. President Ford visited Midland on September 13, 1975, coming here to dedicate the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum. It was a big event for Midlanders and Odes- sans, as approximately 8,000 spectators gathered at Terminal for his arrival. Ford is the first President to visit the Permian Basin since Harry Truman in 1948. Included among the spectators were the Lee and Odessa High bands. At 4:35 the'President stepped out of his plane and was greeted with Dixie,,' as signs went up to welcome him. He shook hands with numerous people, as everyone wanted to touch him. Al- though it was wet and cold, it did not seem to affect the feelings of excitement within the crowd. It was a day to remember for Midlanders, and a great event for our Bi- centennial celebration.
