preseason exhibits potential as the basketball season began, the eyes of rebel fans turned toward coach paul stueckler to see what kind of a team he would be able to build, it was soon evident, however, that the rebels would not allow the lack of height and experience to keep them from being a top team, backed by the outstanding per- formances of marty miller, david birdwell, tommy adams, and jerry graves, the rebels began steadily improving, they took many pre-season victories and came off with consolation honors in the tall city tour- nament and second place in the howard payne tour- nament.

determination is the essence with graduation taking ten seniors off the bas- ketball squad, lee was counted out — by most ev- erybody, a pre-district poll by sportswriters and coaches had lee picked as a sixth place finisher, the rebs built around two returning lettermen, david birdwell and marty miller, and added mem- bers of the j.v. plus tommy adams, a new resident of midland, jack of height and experience were the major problems facing the rebels as the dis- trict season began but they were balanced out by speed and quickness through most of the season, the roundballers came through with a 3-4 first half record and were third place finishers, as the sec- ond half got underway, the maroon developed new hope. the second half of play, the new half, began with renewed vigor and pride, as well as with a new theory on basketball: that there is quite a bit more to roundballing than having your head touch the ceiling, your hands touch your knees, and your feet touch the ground, there is determination, using the new theory, and mixing long hours of di- ligent practice, the mighty maroon came close to a district crown with a third place finish and a I 6- I 8 season record. top left: steve cromwelL top right: coach stueckle left: tommy adams. bottom
