a foundation of basic football technique was laid in the opening game of the season, the rebels showed signs of a sound defen- sive unit as lee ' s offense missed four scoring opportunities in the game, even with the outstanding performance of randy hulme at running back, final score: lee 6 lubbock 20. at borger, lee utilized addi- tional plays and skills, but lost in the end, lee 2, borger 10. the de- fense, led by rick sell, drew kauff- man, and steve deffenbaugh, was quite impressive holding borger to one touchdown and scoring lee ' s only points. the rebels put the ball in the air and revealed an offense that could win. by moving quick run- ning gerry robinson to a halfback position and installing gary lam- bert at quarterback, the offense was able to shine, but they still were behind on the scoring: lee 14, plainview 17.

coach jim acree ' s hard-hitting rebels snapped a thirteen-game losing streak and provided a happy homecoming game for lee rebel fans, lee exploded in the first seven minutes with 19 points, highlighted by a robbie christensen 80 yard punt return, then the rebs held odessa scoreless until the fourth quarter, as the game ended lee 19, odessa 6. jocklin beatty and gary robinson helped spark the rebel ' s offense while defensive standouts were: steve deffenbaugh, drew kauffman, mike fetters, steve rogers, rock shoemaker, dow prather, lynn castle, and christensen. in their second district game, the rebels matched the bobcats stride until the cats scored 14 points in the fourth quarter for a final score of lee 20, san an- gelo 42. the two rivals battled to a 14-14 tie at half- time as lee showed their desire to win in spite of the size difference, but towards the end of the second half, san angelo ' s added weight and speed provided the endurance that won the game. the abilene cooper defensive unit held the rebels offense to one score with the game ending, lee 7, cooper 34. a steady drizzle caused seven fumbles and three of the four by cooper were recovered in spite of the losing effort. sophomore worthy warnack raced seventy-three yards on the opening kickoff to the steers ' 20 yard line to set up a field goal by kenneth hunnicutt. war- nack later took the ball 92 yards for an apparent td but it was called back for a clipping penalty, in the third quarter, the steer ' s quarterback dave duncan scored on a nine-yard run which ended the scoring: lee 3, big spring 7.
