mar- sha Wilson, feature editor: lynn lair, clubs editor, not pictured: susan Jones, clubs editor; teresa ward, society editor, far left: paula pesce. left: pam mc michael. co-editors. 135 willingness to serve students working in the 100 club and junior council strive every day to keep the youth center a place to be proud of. through dedication, candy sales, and swift minds of money changes, the two clubs are a working core of lee. opposite pages: henry schrlener. this page: left: missy leonard. below: lane butler. possessing endurance, pride, and unquenchable spirit, the fnighty storm forward to unite lee. they share elated triumph and forlorn defeat with the student body evoking an intense spirit of union. editor: linda wigley c under the direction of new coach, jim acree, the rebels began putting together a team that sports writers pre- dicted would just not jell, there were only seven returning lettermen who had seen action in ' 69, leaving the rest of the roster to be dotted with inexperience, in addition, the rebels were considered to have inadequate size and speed as far as football in district 5-4a was concerned. acree ' s mere presence in lee high school seemed to pick up that desire and lost pride, rebel gridders became op- timistic for the coming year ' s season instead of making ex- cuses for losing, a spirit hidden for so long began ' to make itself known: in a building filled sith signs, maroon and white, at player ' s homes at 4:00 in the morning, at pep rallies in the halls and the gym, and in the singing of the alma mater. the struggle for victory was not easy, especially in a dis- trict with such perennial powers such as permian, san an- gelo, and cooper, lee took a 19-6 victory over odessa high and then capped off the season with a thrilling 17-14 vic- tory over their crosstown rival, the midland bulldogs, and could have easily won over lubbock, plainview, and big spring. even though the rebels ended their season with two wins and eight losses, they were known to be one of the hardest hitting teams in the district, lee ' s degree of success in its football campaign can be seen in team statistics: in first downs, lee totalled II 3 in all their games to the opponents total of I 34; lee had 1 ,264 yards rushing to the opponents 1,335; and in passing yardage lee had 980 yards to 933. acree ' s fighting rebels of 1970 can view this football season as a success, the team gave victory to its fans on homecoming and over its biggest rival, midland high, but more than these two victories, the lee rebel football team displayed and instilled a valuable pride into the student body of lee high school. showed signs of a sound defen- sive unit as lee ' s offense missed four scoring opportunities in the game, even with the outstanding performance of randy hulme at running back, final score: lee 6 lubbock 20. at borger, lee utilized addi- tional plays and skills, but lost in the end, lee 2, borger 10. the de- fense, led by rick sell, drew kauff- man, and steve deffenbaugh, was quite impressive holding borger to one touchdown and scoring lee ' s only points. the rebels put the ball in the air and revealed an offense that could win. by moving quick run- ning gerry robinson to a halfback position and installing gary lam- bert at quarterback, the offense was able to shine, but they still were behind on the scoring: lee 14, plainview 17. coach jim acree ' s hard-hitting rebels snapped a thirteen-game losing streak and provided a happy homecoming game for lee rebel fans, lee exploded in the first seven minutes with 19 points, highlighted by a robbie christensen 80 yard punt return, then the rebs held odessa scoreless until the fourth quarter, as the game ended lee 19, odessa 6. jocklin beatty and gary robinson helped spark the rebel ' s offense while defensive standouts were: steve deffenbaugh, drew kauffman, mike fetters, steve rogers, rock shoemaker, dow prather, lynn castle, and christensen. in their second district game, the rebels matched the bobcats stride until the city championship celebrafed with 17-14 win the rebel defense held the number two ranked class 5-4a team in the state, permian, to 27 points as the panthers won: lee 7, permian 27. the defense recovered four fumbles and held permian to seven points in the second half as sophomore quarterback pat lyons drove the team 44 yards in six plays for the lee score. despite an effective and often exciting offense that rolled up 349 yards to abilene ' s 386 and 19 first downs to abilene ' s 20, the rebels suffered its eighth loss in nine games, lee 6, abilene 26. lee ' s inability to put the ball over the goal line and abilene ' s ability to make the big play was the difference in the game. in their final game of the season on friday the 13th, the rebels defeated crosstown rival midland high in frigid weather, lee showed early warning of this grid thriller marching after the opening kickoff from its 21 to second and seven at the lee 46. a fake punt kept this drive alive when steve rodgers scrambled 18 yards to the mhs 36 on a fourth and one. from this point, ken- neth hunnicutt kicked a field goal, in the second quarter jocklin beatty scored to give lee a 10-6 lead at half- time, in the second half, mhs scored eight points, but quarterback gary lambert gave the game back to the rebs, skipping outside left end on a 10-yard touchdown run with six minutes to go for an
