ENTERTAINMENT Ask any entertainment critic and he would probably dub this year as The year of the Prince. Prince burst into the limelight with his biographical movie Purple Rain which became one of the biggest money-grossing movies of the summer. The soundtrack brought Prince five Top-40 hits, a grammy, an Oscar, and numerous American Music Awards. Other entertainment news includes Ghostbusters, the summer's biggest movie. The Jackson Victory Tour which shook the country as it became the most expensive tour on record, and Vanessa Williams, Miss America 1984, who was forced to give up her crown after explicit pictures of her were published in Penthouse magazine. And just when it was thought to be safe to go back to summer camp, there was introduced Friday the 13th — Part V! Lionel Ritchie raked in at the Grammys; Amadaeus was the Oscar-winner as it received eight Academy Awards; and the Gremlin was introduced to children's minds. WORLD The world was not immune to substantial events — some joyous and some mournful. Bad news first: the Union Carbide explosion in Bhopol, India that killed over 2,500 people with the chemical MIC; the death of two world leaders, Konstanin Chernenko, U.S.S.R. premier in March and Indira Ghandi of India in November; in California the worst one-man massacre in U.S. History on July 18 at a McDonald's restaurant killing 22 persons; the largest disaster in Mexico on November 19 with the explosion of a petroleum refinery killing 452; the bomb threat on Great Britain's Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher on October 12; and New York Subway Vigillante Bernhard Goetz who opened fire on three muggers, killing one. On the brighter side Great Britain gained its 3rd heir to the throne. Prince Harry, and Bishop Desmond Tutu of Africa received the Nobel Peace Prize for 1984. Yet the single event in which the world banded together was to obliviate the starvation epidemic in Ethiopia. In determination to raise money to feed the world, musicians in Europe, America, and Canada put recordings on the charts: Do They Know It's Christmas and We Are The World. DEATHS Those that will be remembered are: Richard Burton, Truman Capote, Ethel Merman, Marvin Gaye, and Ernest Tubb. Student Life

NEWS NEWS NEWS NEWS NEWS NEWS The school year not only educated 8th graders to freshmen and ridded itself of another class of seniors, but was also filled to the brim with a smorgasbord of unusual news and human-interest stories. POLITICS The political scene dominated the first semester of school as the 4-year presidential term neared its end. President Reagan readied himself to battle for another term, while his opponent Walter Mondale turned middle-America on its ears with his announcement of Geraldine Ferraro for Vice-President, making her the first woman to run for this office. The war waged on with even three live presidential debates on national television. But on the evening of November 6, President Reagan proved to be the victor. The Inauguration in January was held indoors while the Inauguration Parade was cancelled due to a freak blizzard — with the last cancellation being the parade of Andrew Jackson. In Reagan's second term, the decision of the MX missile was sent to Congress. The controversial bill passed in March, 210-217, much the dismay of Democrat speaker Tip O'Neil. SCIENCE If there was ever a year for science it was this year, as new discoveries in space, technology, and medicine shook the world. The space shuttle became an everyday occurrence as it voyaged almost monthly. During the November flight, the FRA advanced with the first woman to walk in space as she rescued some wreckage. The first civilian in space. General Jake Garns, went up with Discovery in April. On October 26, unaware of the media. Baby Fae became the first infant to receive an animal transplant. Born with a fatal cardiac defect, she lived for twelve days with her own heart and twenty with her transplanted heart of a seven-month-old female baboon. Ten days after her death, William Schroeder also gained world-wide fame as he became the second recipient of an artificial heart in Kentucky, and three months later Murray Hayden became the third recipient of an artificial heart. SPORTS The summer sizzled for sixteen days as the United States Olympic team raked in an unprecedented 83 gold medals in Los Angeles at the XXIII Olympiad. Those best remembered are: Carl Lewis and his four gold medals for track-and-field; gymnast Mary Lou Retton and her five medals — one being gold; and Greg Louganis with his two golds in diving. Sports news continued with the Detroit Tigers winning the World Series, the San Francisco 49ers defeating the Miami Dolphins in Superbowl XIX; and Villanova receiving the NCAA basketball trophy after defeating Georgetown.
