Memoriam They wait for us, instead, in a silent corner They will not pass this way again of God's universe. To share our lives and laughter. Not in darkness and not alone. To walk beside us in the halls; But smiling, with arms outstretched. They will not lift a glass Surely it is enough to know that they were here. to toast our triumphs. And we can rejoice in celebration Nor mourn with tender tears of the memories that they gave us. for our defeats. Lugene Tucker Lahoma Gray, Junior Chris Moore, Freshman Student Life — 17

NEWS NEWS NEWS NEWS NEWS NEWS The school year not only educated 8th graders to freshmen and ridded itself of another class of seniors, but was also filled to the brim with a smorgasbord of unusual news and human-interest stories. POLITICS The political scene dominated the first semester of school as the 4-year presidential term neared its end. President Reagan readied himself to battle for another term, while his opponent Walter Mondale turned middle-America on its ears with his announcement of Geraldine Ferraro for Vice-President, making her the first woman to run for this office. The war waged on with even three live presidential debates on national television. But on the evening of November 6, President Reagan proved to be the victor. The Inauguration in January was held indoors while the Inauguration Parade was cancelled due to a freak blizzard — with the last cancellation being the parade of Andrew Jackson. In Reagan's second term, the decision of the MX missile was sent to Congress. The controversial bill passed in March, 210-217, much the dismay of Democrat speaker Tip O'Neil. SCIENCE If there was ever a year for science it was this year, as new discoveries in space, technology, and medicine shook the world. The space shuttle became an everyday occurrence as it voyaged almost monthly. During the November flight, the FRA advanced with the first woman to walk in space as she rescued some wreckage. The first civilian in space. General Jake Garns, went up with Discovery in April. On October 26, unaware of the media. Baby Fae became the first infant to receive an animal transplant. Born with a fatal cardiac defect, she lived for twelve days with her own heart and twenty with her transplanted heart of a seven-month-old female baboon. Ten days after her death, William Schroeder also gained world-wide fame as he became the second recipient of an artificial heart in Kentucky, and three months later Murray Hayden became the third recipient of an artificial heart. SPORTS The summer sizzled for sixteen days as the United States Olympic team raked in an unprecedented 83 gold medals in Los Angeles at the XXIII Olympiad. Those best remembered are: Carl Lewis and his four gold medals for track-and-field; gymnast Mary Lou Retton and her five medals — one being gold; and Greg Louganis with his two golds in diving. Sports news continued with the Detroit Tigers winning the World Series, the San Francisco 49ers defeating the Miami Dolphins in Superbowl XIX; and Villanova receiving the NCAA basketball trophy after defeating Georgetown.
