1985 Legend We're Changin' Every Day! Robert E. Lee High School 411 ESE Loop 323 Tyler, Texas Volume 27 Opening — The times change and we change with them.” Lot hair I RIGHT: There's no time for soci.il hello's with six minutes between chisses for Sonya Barnes and l.ametra Williams. TAR RIGHT Greg Miller rushes to class — an everyday occurrence for most students BHI.OW RIGHT Tutorial period provides extra study time for those wishing to attend BOTTOM: Students make use of the temporary walkways over the mud We're changin' every day! That seemed like a rather appropriate phrase with which to describe the 1984-85 school year. There were many changes taking place around us: clothes styles were changing (of course); cars were becoming more aerodynamic; and even the city of Tyler was growing (with about eight new office buildings and shopping centers). Also taking our lives by storm were the computers, which were becoming more complex each day. Television shows of a few years ago, such as The Waltons, transform with time to the ranks of Dallas and Dynasty. We are definitely in the center of a maelstrom of change! Yet students at Lee were not immune to other forms of change. Primarily, the most obvious changes we and other students across the state of Texas experienced were those brought by House Bill 72. It gouged its mark in the public school system as quickly and destructively as Sherman's march on the South during the Civil War. The Bill's regulations required the student to maintain a C- average or above to participate in extracurricular activities. Also Senior final exemptions were abolished. Establishing a tutorial period was a requirement of the school reform bill. Beginning at 7:45 A.M., the period allowed students to receive extra help from teachers. This requirement, in turn, brought back the four lunch periods and six minutes passing time between most classes. Opening The Fall Line-Up The PTA decided to bring the 1984-85 school year in with a bang — which they did! In August, shortly after school commenced, a fashion show was held for any students who wished to attend, with a soc-hop following. Morales, as well as school spirit, were certainly boosted as fellow students presented fashions from Tyler's retail businessmen. The Lee cannoneers presented our colors and the teachers and principals performed in skits. TOP: Anne Bass and Hayes Rye model the year's formats. ABOVE LEPT: Ed Hampe and Jennifer Garrett were the MC's for the Bash. ABOVE RIGHT: Hillary Utay. Student Life — 5 ed aider ally Popcorn, hamburgers, caramel apples were just a few of the carnival-type refreshments offered a la carte at the Red Raider Rally last October. The annual event was established to permit the campus clubs and organizations to hold one of their two allowed fundraisers. Over twenty clubs participated in the rally. Aside from the regulars, the festival presented some rather unusual foods. Of these were the Mexican fajitas, German smoked sausage sandwiches, and the famous beverage, the Red Raider Delight. Some activities offered were the Red Raider County Jail ' Flashy Photos, and a mini-concert. Carnations were also sold for Lee JT week, and autographs were taken for the yearbook. TOP HECE members. Everyday of the week was a dress-up day to get everyone involved. Flagging, a common sight during the infamous week, was not so common this year, as school officials cracked down. The Pre-Christmas holiday season was celebrated at Lee in all the grandeur possible. December 12 was the night when the girls laid out their formats and the guys straightened their bow-ties. The annual Christmas Dance, in which the Southern Belle Officers were presented with their escorts, proved to be quite a success despite the extreme scarcity of parking places at Harvey Hall due to the other football games and parties. Also, to get everyone in that special holiday mood, an assembly was held the day school dismissed with entertainment supplied by Good Vibrations, Santa Claus and his elves. The steam of students forms into a rampaging river then divides into four tributaries: Upperclassmen, who take the opportunity of off-campus eating; underclassmen, who have no choice but to go to the cafeteria; the studious ones who use their time wisely in the library; and the daring ones who sneak off campus fora morsel of real food. To share our lives and laughter. Not in darkness and not alone. To walk beside us in the halls; But smiling, with arms outstretched. They will not lift a glass Surely it is enough to know that they were here. to toast our triumphs. And we can rejoice in celebration Nor mourn with tender tears of the memories that they gave us. for our defeats. Lugene Tucker Lahoma Gray, Junior Chris Moore, Freshman Student Life — 17 NEWS NEWS NEWS NEWS NEWS NEWS The school year not only educated 8th graders to freshmen and ridded itself of another class of seniors, but was also filled to the brim with a smorgasbord of unusual news and human-interest stories. POLITICS The political scene dominated the first semester of school as the 4-year presidential term neared its end. President Reagan readied himself to battle for another term, while his opponent Walter Mondale turned middle-America on its ears with his announcement of Geraldine Ferraro for Vice-President, making her the first woman to run for this office. The war waged on with even three live presidential debates on national television. But on the evening of November 6, President Reagan proved to be the victor. The Inauguration in January was held indoors while the Inauguration Parade was cancelled due to a freak blizzard — with the last cancellation being the parade of Andrew Jackson. In Reagan's second term, the decision of the MX missile was sent to Congress. The controversial bill passed in March, 210-217, much the dismay of Democrat speaker Tip O'Neil. SCIENCE If there was ever a year for science it was this year, as new discoveries in space, technology, and medicine shook the world. The space shuttle became an everyday occurrence as it voyaged almost monthly. During the November flight, the FRA advanced with the first woman to walk in space as she rescued some wreckage. The first civilian in space. General Jake Garns, went up with Discovery in April. On October 26, unaware of the media. Baby Fae became the first infant to receive an animal transplant. Born with a fatal cardiac defect, she lived for twelve days with her own heart and twenty with her transplanted heart of a seven-month-old female baboon. Ten days after her death, William Schroeder also gained world-wide fame as he became the second recipient of an artificial heart in Kentucky, and three months later Murray Hayden became the third recipient of an artificial heart. SPORTS The summer sizzled for sixteen days as the United States Olympic team raked in an unprecedented 83 gold medals in Los Angeles at the XXIII Olympiad. Those best remembered are: Carl Lewis and his four gold medals for track-and-field; gymnast Mary Lou Retton and her five medals — one being gold; and Greg Louganis with his two golds in diving. Sports news continued with the Detroit Tigers winning the World Series, the San Francisco 49ers defeating the Miami Dolphins in Superbowl XIX; and Villanova receiving the NCAA basketball trophy after defeating Georgetown. UP€R ENTERTAINMENT Ask any entertainment critic and he would probably dub this year as The year of the Prince. Prince burst into the limelight with his biographical movie Purple Rain which became one of the biggest money-grossing movies of the summer. The soundtrack brought Prince five Top-40 hits, a grammy, an Oscar, and numerous American Music Awards. Other entertainment news includes Ghostbusters, the summer's biggest movie. The Jackson Victory Tour which shook the country as it became the most expensive tour on record, and Vanessa Williams, Miss America 1984, who was forced to give up her crown after explicit pictures of her were published in Penthouse magazine. And just when it was thought to be safe to go back to summer camp, there was introduced Friday the 13th — Part V! Lionel Ritchie raked in at the Grammys; Amadaeus was the Oscar-winner as it received eight Academy Awards; and the Gremlin was introduced to children's minds. WORLD The world was not immune to substantial events — some joyous and some mournful. Bad news first: the Union Carbide explosion in Bhopol, India that killed over 2,500 people with the chemical MIC; the death of two world leaders, Konstanin Chernenko, U.S.S.R. premier in March and Indira Ghandi of India in November; in California the worst one-man massacre in U.S. History on July 18 at a McDonald's restaurant killing 22 persons; the largest disaster in Mexico on November 19 with the explosion of a petroleum refinery killing 452; the bomb threat on Great Britain's Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher on October 12; and New York Subway Vigillante Bernhard Goetz who opened fire on three muggers, killing one. On the brighter side Great Britain gained its 3rd heir to the throne. Prince Harry, and Bishop Desmond Tutu of Africa received the Nobel Peace Prize for 1984. Yet the single event in which the world banded together was to obliviate the starvation epidemic in Ethiopia. In determination to raise money to feed the world, musicians in Europe, America, and Canada put recordings on the charts: Do They Know It's Christmas and We Are The World. DEATHS Those that will be remembered are: Richard Burton, Truman Capote, Ethel Merman, Marvin Gaye, and Ernest Tubb. PICKENS 225 East Amherst Tyler, Texas (214)581-7000 291 Well, that's ail folks, another year over, another chapter ends. But there were things that certainly distinguished this year from others past and hopefully from those to come: changes. This year's theme, “We're Changin' Every Day, relates the construction which we have had to endure in school as well as in our lives. We have lost those we have loved and gained new friends in the process. With these ideas in mind, 1 hope this yearbook captured moments involved in such a transformation-filled year. 1 wanted to thank several people who indirectly aided the production of this book. After working on a yearbook staff for three years, I know how vital the cooperation of the faculty is. They allowed us to interrupt classes for pictures, information, or anything else we needed. I also want to thank the administration, especially Mr. Hall, for cooperating with all our efforts. Another group that deserves recognition is my staff. Their job required a lot of time and hard work with little praise. Often their only incentive was an inner desire to produce a good book. I feel that they are all creative people and that they did produce a good book. I regret not having been able to work with them because of unusual schedule mix- ups. (I want to thank Mrs. Dunfee for her near-impossible task of finding an alternative time in the schedule to fit me in.) No editorial would be complete without thanking Mrs. Jane McDaniel, our advisor. She was always willing to give advice, but she left the final decisions to us. She was more a friend to us than a teacher. The aboved named, and you, the students, are what make the yearbook what it really is. Thank you. Michael Oholendt Editor 1984-85
