As we began planning the 1981 Legend early in the summer, we felt the theme “A Year of Change” could be an interesting, yet appropriate subject. We were aware that the elections would take a major place in the national news. We all probably were more than a little surprised to find that for the first time since 1932, Republicans outnumbered Democrats in our Senate. Many Lee seniors voted for the first time. Inauguration Day will go down in history as unforgettable, for as President Ronald Reagan was taking the oath of office, 52 of our American countrymen that had been held hostage for 444 days in Iran were boarding a plane to return home. January 20th certainly began “a year of change”. Americanism continues to run high. Countless miles of yellow ribbons helped to draw our country together again. All over our city change was apparant. Many old familiar places gave way to progress. Downtown Tyler took on a new look. J We stood and watched as the old Citizens First National Bank fell in ruins, to be replaced with a beautiful, modern structure. The People’s National Bank added Tyler’s tallest building facility that, along with Tyler Bank and Trust, revitalized the downtown area. The change that had the greatest impact on our lives occurred on Valentine’s Day when the beautiful John Tyler High School was destroyed by fire. In only a matter of hours the true impact was felt. After surveying the damage, the TISD board recommended sharing Lee’s campus with our former cross-town rivals. There were many unspoken fears that this situation might not work, but we were pleased to hear Mr. Hall say that the entire student body had promised its cooperation. Although the new schedule meant that we would have shorter class periods and our afternoons free, it also meant more homework and an extra effort in getting to school on time. The fire not only affected the two schools but the entire city. For instance, the split schedule meant that employers had to reschedule their student employees. Robert E. Lee took on a dual look hoping to make the John Tyler students feel at home. All over the campus one could see not only red and white, but also the addition of J. T. Blue. Welcome signs in rooms and hallways and red and blue ribbons on campus trees were waiting to greet the new students on the first day. One of the first joint activities was a concert by the two bands. The proceeds were given to John Tyler to help them replace the Lion mascot that was destroyed in the fire. Mr. Hall summed up the loss by saying that “together we have made the best of a bad situation.” The “Year of Change” was especially significant to the seniors, for it was the beginning of a life on their own, leaving the security of home and school to face the world of college and career. The Cheerleaders performed for the first time as a group at the 1980 Red-White Football Scrimmage. In June, they attended the Thunderhawk Cheerleading Camp on the University of Oklahoma campus in Norman, Oklahoma. While at camp, the Cheerleaders received a Superior rating, three Excellent ratings, and were awarded the Spirit Stick for most spirited and Superstar Squad. In August, they met with the Southern Belles and taught the cheers and chants learned at camp. Football season kept all the Cheerleaders busy as they performed at ten Pep Rallies, cheered at all football games, and conducted a super-spirited John Tyler week. At the same time, they supported the Volleyball team and traveled to Commerce to watch the Lady Raiders play for the bi-district championship. Basketball season began with the Cheerleaders attending all home games and several out-of-town district games. The highlight of this season was the T.J.C. Basketball Tournament, where the Lee Cheerleaders were presented the highly-coveted Outstanding Cheerleaders Award. For the baseball team, the Cheerleaders act as “Bat Girls”. Lee campus, including ninety-three classes plus Reading. With the exception of special courses such as Humanities, Creative Writing, and Reading, the classes are divided into three levels: basic, regular, honors. These levels, while establishing specific guidelines for their students, have two common goals: to expose students to relevant literature and to increase each student’s ability to speak and write correctly. The units of study within the department are varied and challenging, and for over half the students, they are college preparatory. Literature, grammar, research, composition, study techniques, and mythology are studied at some time during the four year program. In addition, each teacher supplements the basic language arts requirements with his or ber own individual talents and creative 'deas. Alfred Lord Tennyson once commented, “I am a part of all that I have met.” Hopefully, die students who participate in the language arts program at Robert E. Lee can look back apon their experience with the knowledge that vhat they learned is a part of them. Mrs. Whitman’s class gets set. Brian Boatman reports as Groucho Marx in Mrs. S. Cokers English 177 SPEECH Speech I, or the Fundamentals of Speech, is a course offered to provide the students with knowledge on how to better communicate with the public. Opportunities are provided to gain experience in a variety of speaking situations. In fact, experience in speaking is the key to ease of speaking. Mr. Alan Shumate is the sponsor. We are gathered here today . . . Douglas Tidwell Debate Debate is a study in the basics of eontest speaking in both debate and extemporaneous speaking. Emphasis is jlaced on research and tournament eompetiiion. Lee Debaters travel to ipproximately ten tournaments each r-ear, as well as participating in N.F.L. District and U.I.L. District eompetition. Hear No Evil Lynn Dark takes credit for giving an excellent speech Journalism Ray .Jones examines cartoon. Journalism I students explore various aspects of media including advertising, reporting, special writing such as features, sports and editorial, page layout, headline writing, television production, photography, and history and ethic code of journalism. Students’ work may be published in the student newspaper. Student projects include producing a television newscast, creating original advertising, and shooting, developing and printing photographs. 180 Special Education The Special Education program at Robert E. Lee serves approximately 140 students. These students are involved in main stream campus classes, special activities, and in special classes. Craft items made by students in the self-contained classroom are offered for sale to students, the faculty, and the community. Most Resource students are involved in work programs on the eleventh and twelfth grade level. These students receive high school graduation credits for successful work experiences, which are supervised by the on campus Vocational Adjustment Coordinator. The sendees of a Diagnostic Consultant are available on campus. All new referrals to Special Education are handled through this office. The SAC program is also a part of the Special Education Department. Susan Allison and Lorrio Wright show candy wreaths. Mathematics The Mathematics Department offers courses for all students at Robert E. Lee. There are sixteen different mathematics courses offered, ranging from fundamentals of mathematics up to and including calculus. College bound students can study mat hematics all four years in high school plus a semester of computer mathematics. The Number Sense Team and Calculator Team competed in District UIL, and a team of three students represented Lee at a computer programing contest held at North Texas State University. One hundred twenty-one students took the Annual High School Mathematics Test with Edward Newman making the highest score. There are eighteen teachers in the Mathematics Department, and Diane Sorrels is new to the faculty this year. Jeff Bailey sleeps in Algebra! Without a knowledge of the past, the present is not easily understood. In the Social Studies curriculum attention is given to political development of the past, and governing processes of today. Students are provided opportunities to study world cultures, a free market economy and current word relationships. Emphasis is placed on the study of the values of citizenships and the ideals of a democratic nation. The Social Studies curriculum also includes a study of the growth of ideas, religions, and art as civilizing forces in the history of man. Lee. The Science Department includes physics, chemistry, biology, geology, marine and physical science. Each of these courses are offered on both the regular and on the honors levels. In addition to these classes, there is a science class offered to the gifted and talented. Approximately 1200 students take science courses. Among the many activities offered in the science department are the chemistry, biology, geology, and marine science clubs. Students in these clubs are eligible to go on the various field trips offered by each club. Each spring approximately sixty chemistry students attend a science symposium at Bryan Adams High School to hear lectures by experts in various fields of science. This year’s honor students were offered the chance to attend the Sixth Annual Society of Women Engineers Conference for High School Students. Monty Stanley with science project. It helps each student to develop understandings, attitudes, and habits that are conducive to healthful living. Each student also has the opportunity to learn and practice first aid techniques which will enable him her to cope with emergencies in both home and in the community. The purpose of Driver’s Education is to develop competent, defensive drivers. The course is divided into four parts: classroom, multi-media, simulator, and in-car instruction. In the classroom phase, the student is presented with factual information from the Drive Right text and the Texas Drivers Handbook. These facts are reinforced in the multi-media phase through the use of sound films and filmstrips. The purpose of simulation is to aid the student in recognizing potential and real hazards. Perception is the key word used. Behind-the-wheel gives the student on the road experience in real situations. Upon the successful completion of the course, certificates are awarded. wch Montgomery practices CPR on baby. Student prepares for behind-the-wheel. Lori Townes in simulator. Lee is designed to serve both the serious art student, who wants to make art a major part of his future, and the student who merely wants a brief exposure to a variety of art forms. Art I and Crafts require no prerequisite; they acquaint beginning students with the basic principles of design, drawing-paintingprintmaking techniques, and craft procedures. Art II, III, and IV build upon the foundation acquired in Art I. Students who progress through all four levels gradually add to their experience sculpture, lettering, painting with various media, pen and ink, and art history. In Art IV, students are encouraged to pursue work in areas of special interest and to prepare a portfolio for regional scholarship competition. All students who participate in the art program should benefit from the experience. Those who intend to pursue art careers should develop their talent and creativity to a higher degree. Others should gain an appreciation for the importance of art in society, and they, too, should find their creative scope broadened. i Andre' Harris Lewis Nicholson James Brown s Scott Lumley The choir goes to solo and ensemble F Dianna Wagner. After drilling with the cannon throughout th summer months, the University Interscholastic Leagi ruled that no firearms could be taken to UIL meet This decision eliminated a proud part of R.E.L. spirt However, Lee was allowed to fire the cannon at the Ros Parade and after pep rallies. The cannoneers were allowe to charge the cannon up the field at the Robert I Lee—John Tyler football game, but were not allowe to fire it. For the first time in 14 years, Robert E.
