Lee High School are establishing a rich tradition. The Legend presents many of the meaningful experiences of the year which support the traditions and serve as an inspiration for present and future students of Robert E. Lee High School. Lee entered the 1959 football season with high hopes of improving dismal 1958 record. The Rebels never seemed to quite live up to their pre-season promise until late in the season, as they were outscored by their opponents 211 to 91 in compiling a record of two wins against eight losses. While this is a great improvement over our first year record, we are looking forward to an even better season next year. The team operated under a handicap all year long as tragedy struck, even before the season, started in the death of Rene' Walling, senior co-captain. Another blow, early in December, came as the resignation' of Head Coach Willie Shortie Sirman. His successor will be Coach O. E. Amburg. In the post-season balloting, junior tackle Bobby Curtis was unanimously elected to both the offensive and defensive All-District teams. Terry Cooper and Steve Hillis were given Honorable Mention in the same balloting by the 7-AAA football coaches. 78 CO-CAPTAINS: Larry Loggins and Rene' Walling. COACHES: Corky Bowling, head coach Willie Sirman, Sam Bell, Oz Amburg, Dick Lindsay. MANAGERS: Charles Stein, Craig Loving, Richard Collins, Mike Rodieck. 79 PAUL BROOME Senior Tackle Lcttcrman I Joe Hooker slashes into the lino ai Jim Patterson closes in from the side. LEE-6 JOHN TYLER-13 The Rebels kicked off their 1959 season with a near-victory over cross-town rival John Tyler High School. The final score was not indicative of the way the game was played, however, as the Rebels pushed the heavier Lions around at will during the entire game. Lee lead in all statistics except one — the final score. The Lions rolled for a touchdown sixty yards from the opening kickoff, but the Rebels countered in the third quarter with Cooper going over from fifteen yards out. The losing tally came with eighty seconds left in the game on a fifteen yard pass play. STUART CHESLEY Senior Tackle Letterman I Steve Hilli it pulled down from behind by a Carthage defender. Lee hit the road for the first time, losing to Dallas' Bryan Adams, 28-0. The Rebels fought valiantly, but in a losing cause, against the heavier Bryan Adams eleven. Lee was behind from almost the very beginning and managed only one scoring threat, late in the fourth quarter. LEE - 35 PALESTINE - 26 The Rebels rolled to the first victory in the young history of the school with a 35-26 victory over Palestine. Both teams had a fine night offensively, but a tightening of the Rebel defenses closed the door to the Wildcats in the final period. Wallender, Cooper, and Hillis scored for the Rebels with Neill kicking the conversions. STEVE HILLIS Senior Fullback Letterman II Steve Hillis lunges for an extra yard in the Palestine name. 81 JOE HOOKER Senior Halfback A beautiful defensive save I letterman II LEE - 6 MT. PLEASANT - 20 The Rebels hit the road again, suffering their third loss of the season at the hands of the Mt. Pleasant Tigers. The Rebels matched their speedy hosts in the first half but fell behind in the second as the Tigers ground out yardage slowly but steadily. The Rebels were the better of the two teams statistics-wise, but could muster only one sustained scoring drive. LEE - 0 GLADEWATER - 22 The Rebels, hampered by penalties and fumbleitis, lost their District 7-AAA opener to the speedy Gladewater Bears. Again the Rebels were superior in the statistics department, with Jack Neill and Terry Cooper shining offensively, but could not manage to score. Jack Neill keep for two yard again t Carthage. GERALD KEELING Senior End Letterman II 82 LEE-6 An unidentified Rebel gets a handful of shirt as a Nacogdoches back goes by. HENDERSON-33 LEE-0 DAVID KENT Senior Halfback Lctferman II NACOGDOCHES- 28 Robert E. Lee stumbled and fell again to the alert Henderson Lions, 33-6. Though senior quarterback Jack Neill was injured in the second quarter, the Rebels were ably managed by junior Rick Hughes who engineered a 74 yard touchdown drive. The Lion multiple offense and defense was, however, too much for the hustling Rebels. The Rebels were turned back again by the Nacogdoches Dragons, 28-0. The margin of score would have been much wider if the Dragons had not had five touchdowns called back. On the other hand, it would have been much closer had senior halfback Terry Cooper had his way. Though Cooper was the game's leading rusher, his performance was the only bright spot in a long, long night of football. LARRY LOGONS Waller Lindsay follows a step behind a fleet Nacogdoches back. Senior Center Letterman II « 83 RICKY MALLOY Senior End Letterman II Eight Rebels form a protective cloud of interference for the ball carrier on a kickoff return. LEE - 8 JACKSONVILLE -14 LEE - 22 A second half rally by the Rebels fell short by two yards as the Jacksonville Indians handed Lee its fifth defeat in a row. The first half showed the Indians' steam-roller offense slowed but never halted by the Rebels. The game hung in the balance until the fourth period, when a twenty yard drive died on the Jacksonville two yard stripe, taking the Rebel chances with it. Lee celebrated its first homecoming by soundly bouncing the Carthage Bulldogs in the drizzling rain and biting wind. The well-earned victory was marked by extraordinarily good football in spite of the weather as the Rebels entirely dominated the first half and outlasted the hustling Bulldogs in the second. Terry Cooper and Steve Hillis led a slashing ground attack THOMAS McKAY Senior End Letterman I Terry Cooper charges the camera in the homecoming game. GEORGE PICKLE Senior Halfback Letterman I An unidentified Rebel back breaks almost into the clear against John Tyler. CARTHAGE-0 while Steve Yates stopped two Bulldog drives with pass interceptions. The victory, our first in district competition, left the Rebels with a 2-7 season record. The Homecoming Queen, Miss Sara Arnold, was presented by Student Council President Jack Spitzberg at the sock hop after the game. LEE - 8 KILGORE - 27 The Rebels wound up the season with a 27-8 loss to the district champion Kilgore Bulldogs. An upset of the first magnitude seemed in the making before a Rebel drive expired on the Kilgore four yard line. This near miss seemed to break the spirit of the Lee gridders, for the remainder of the game was dominated by the fleet Bulldog halfbacks. HARVEY WALIENDER Senior Halfbeck letterman II Terry Cooper turn the corner and leave a Lion defender looking. 85 “B” TEAM FOOTBALL The B football team compiled a 2-4-1 record against competition from all over East Texas. In spite of their losing more games than they won, the B team outscored their opponents 67 to 49. Though their playing season seems to have been unusually short, it was not meant to be that way as games with Gladewater, Kilgore, and Gilmer were rained out. We are sorry that a team picture was not available. Those on the team were Tom Ashcraft, Mike Clapp, John Dumas, Jim Garner, Johnny Hacker, Kenneth Smith, Bob McKnight, Max Trowbridge, Jerry Wood, Billy Felty, Bernie Gotwald, Bo Hildebrand, Robert Schwartz, Garry Walker, Bob White, Joe English, Roy Longshore, Ray Haybrook, Ronny Horsley, John Maher, Mike Mitchell, Ronny Smith, Jim Addington, Charles Arnold, Dickey Caswell, Terry Graham, David Hummel, Gene Kemp, Bill Short, and Doug Hene-gar. Near the middle of the campaign the team hit its peak, winning six out of seven and taking second place in the TJC Tournament before slumping to a short (six games) losing streak. Senior guard Jerry Parker was fourth in the district in total scoring. Parker and senior center Jack Spitzberg were elected to the All-District second team in the coaches' post-season balloting. 88 89 Manager David Boehner and Ronnie Bott. REBEL BASEBALL The 1959 Rebel baseball team finishes in a tie for third place in District 7-AAA. The team had an over-all record of seven wins versus eight losses and a district slate of two wins and three losses. The pitching chores were largely handled by Butch Wright (2-5) who, despite his record, was one of the better pitchers in the district. Three returning lettermen, Owen Coon, Steve Hillis, and Walter Lindsey, stabilize an otherwise largely inexperienced team- Also pitchers Rick Stripling (2-0 last year), Jim Dempsey (1-2), and Mike Woods (1-1) along with Mike Lawrence, who won All-District Honorable Mention but did not letter, are again on the team. The season began in the middle of March, too late to be included in the 1960 Legend. All spring sports were excluded for the same reason. 97 - BACK ROW: Anno Bottford, Sherry Carroll, Coach Delarot, Lewis Horris, Howard Barnett, Mike Clark, Dickie Caswell, Jack Moore, Leslie Barnett. FRONT ROW: Corky Corcoran, Ricky Gibbs, Mike Layton, Jimmy Addington, Jerry Dawes, George Sweenoy, Cliff Woodward. REBEL TENNIS The 1959 Rebel tennis team was highly successful, but no trophy remains to prove it because none are given in tennis. The team's top players all placed in district competition with Kathleen Corky Corcoran taking first in the girls' singles. The doubles team of Anne Botsford and Jean Talbert taking second in the senior division, and doubles partners Tom Browne and Jan Gordon sweeping off second in their division. During the season a record of 5 wins, 1 loss, and 1 tie was compiled. Returning lettermen (letterwomen?) Corky Corcoran and Anne Botsford head a strong girls' team while Lewis Harris and Ricky Gibbs shoulder the burden in the men's division. By the time you read this, these and their understudies will have probably captured the top three places in each division in district, regional, and state competition. Let us hope the 1960 tennis team can match their flawless record. 98 The men't doubles team of lewis Harris and Ricky Gibbs square off for the camera on the lee tennis courts. 99 5r 1= REBEL GOLF The 1959 Rebel golf team won the Class AAA State Championship, setting a new course record in the process. T. C. Hamilton, Steve Nourse, Ronnie Rhone, and Jerry Parker combined their talents to forge a sizzling 293 on the last eighteen holes and easily outdistance runner-up Andrews. The long climb to the state championship included victories over Athens and Corsicana, second place in the South Park Invitational Tournament in Beaumont, first place in the Athens High School Tournament, a victory over Sulphur Springs, the district championship at Jacksonville, and the regional championship at Dallas. A team picture was not available, but the squad was composed of Jerry Parker, Ronnie Rhone, Kenny McKenzie, David King, Charles Steen, Mike Gross, Gerald Urback, Boyd Watson, Joe Amis, John Calvert, and Butch Acker. They will be out to continue the state championship tradition of all former Rebel golf teams. 100 Golf Coach Jake Smith give some advice on driving. 101 WM TRACK SQUAD REBEL TRACK The 1959 Rebel track team won district honors by an overwhelming margin but failed to place in the regional meet. Their season record included a win of the Rose Relays and either first or second in every other meet entered. High individual performances included a new Rose Relay record set by the mile relay team of Terry Cooper, Mike Warner, Marquis Whittington, and Bob Breedlove. Much of the nucleus of last year's district championship team is back again to improve on their times, heights, and distances of 1959. We are depending on them to uphold the fine old Robert E. Lee custom of having a state championship team every year. 102 Bobby Curti puts the shot. KirbV Quirk Polices with the discus. Tommy Ashcraft pulls up end over.
